Smothers Leads Second-Half Surge as NC State Defeats Virginia 35-31

10:12 AM

RALEIGH – Hollywood Smothers rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, and Cian Slone's late interception sealed NC State's 35-31 victory over Virginia on Saturday afternoon at Carter-Finley Stadium.

The game featured 457 rushing yards between the two teams and seven rushing touchdowns in a back-and-forth affair that saw four lead changes. Smothers became the first NC State player since Reggie Gallaspy II in 2018 to rush for 130-plus yards and score twice on the ground in the same game, averaging 8.2 yards per carry.

Both offenses came out firing in the first quarter, producing four consecutive touchdown drives to open the contest. Virginia struck first when J'Mari Taylor broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-one, capping a 10-play, 75-yard drive that consumed 4:23. The Wolfpack answered immediately as CJ Bailey scampered 30 yards for a touchdown just 2:11 later, evening the score at 7-7.

Virginia regained the lead when Taylor punched in a 9-yard touchdown run, but NC State responded with Bailey connecting with Noah Rogers for a 27-yard touchdown pass. Rogers, playing his first full game after missing time last week with an injury, hauled in two passes for 38 yards and the score.

The Cavaliers seized control in the second quarter through precision and field position. Virginia converted 10 of 13 third-down attempts in the first half while NC State struggled mightily, going 0-for-6 on third downs before the break. Will Bettridge added a 29-yard field goal, then Virginia extended their lead to 24-14 on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Chandler Morris to Sage Ennis with 17 seconds remaining in the half.

That late score came after Cam Ross returned a punt 48 yards to set up excellent field position for the Cavaliers, who entered halftime controlling possession time 20:04 to 9:56.

NC State's offense awakened in the third quarter, scoring on all three of its possessions to flip the game. Smothers opened the half with a 14-yard touchdown run, then Bailey added a 12-yard rushing touchdown to give the Wolfpack their first lead at 28-24.

Virginia answered with Taylor's most explosive play of the day — a 66-yard touchdown run that required just three plays and 1:28 to restore their advantage at 31-28. Taylor finished with 150 rushing yards on 17 carries, adding 13 receiving yards.

But NC State had the final answer in the third quarter when Smothers capped a 9-play, 75-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown run, putting the Wolfpack ahead 35-31 entering the final period.

The fourth quarter became a defensive struggle, with both offenses failing to reach the end zone. Virginia's best opportunity came with 13:20 remaining when Bettridge attempted a 47-yard field goal that struck the left upright, keeping the deficit at four points.

Bailey finished 16-of-23 passing for 200 yards and one touchdown, distributing the ball to seven different receivers. His 44 rushing yards on six carries gave him two touchdowns on the ground. The sophomore quarterback completed 70 percent of his passes while avoiding turnovers.

Morris completed 30 of 43 passes for 257 yards and one touchdown for Virginia, also adding 56 rushing yards. Jahmal Edrine led Virginia receivers with 68 yards on six catches, while Trell Harris caught seven passes for 52 yards.

The Cavaliers' final drive began at their own 19-yard line with 2:12 remaining. Morris moved the team downfield efficiently, completing passes to multiple receivers to reach the NC State 12-yard line. However, Slone stepped in front of an intended receiver to secure the interception with 1:02 remaining, ending Virginia's comeback hopes.

Defensively, NC State made crucial adjustments after halftime. The Wolfpack allowed just seven points in the final two quarters after surrendering 24 in the first half. Caden Fordham led NC State with nine tackles, while Sean Brown added nine tackles and one tackle for loss.

Virginia's James Jackson recorded eight tackles to pace the Cavaliers' defense, while Devin Neal contributed six tackles, one tackle for loss, and one pass breakup. Neither team recorded a sack, with both offensive lines providing excellent protection throughout the contest.

The Wolfpack controlled time of possession 27:35 to 32:25 but made their drives count when necessary. NC State converted 2-of-2 fourth-down attempts, including a crucial fourth-and-one conversion that set up an early touchdown. Virginia managed 1-of-2 on fourth down but couldn't convert when trailing in the fourth quarter.

Special teams played a significant role, particularly Virginia's return game. Ross averaged 20.3 yards on four punt returns, including the 48-yard return that set up a second-quarter touchdown. Both teams handled kickoffs efficiently, with NC State's Charlie Birtwistle averaging 64.3 yards on six attempts and Virginia's Daniel Sparks averaging 65.0 yards.

The victory improved NC State to 2-0 on the season and moved the all-time series record to 38-22-1 in favor of the Wolfpack. Under Dave Doeren, NC State improved to 4-0 against Virginia.

NC State finished with 416 total yards of offense compared to Virginia's 514, but the Wolfpack's ability to score in the red zone proved decisive. NC State converted all three of its red zone opportunities into touchdowns, while Virginia managed three touchdowns and one field goal on five red zone trips.

West Charlotte Claims 3A Crown with 14-7 Victory Over Seventy-First

12:28 PM

RALEIGH – On a chilly Saturday afternoon at Carter-Finley Stadium, the West Charlotte Lions captured the NCHSAA 3A state championship with a hard-fought 14-7 victory over Seventy-First, riding an efficient passing attack and stalwart defensive effort to secure the title.

In a game where offensive opportunities proved scarce, West Charlotte quarterback Jamouri Nichols delivered a masterful performance, completing 12 of 13 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns. His precision through the air proved to be the difference in a defensive struggle that saw both teams battle for every yard.

The Lions struck first, establishing their passing attack early when Nichols connected with KD Cotton on a 6-yard touchdown strike in the opening quarter. That early score would stand as the game's only points until late in the second quarter, as both defenses settled in and refused to yield ground.

Seventy-First, playing without starting quarterback Deandre Nance due to a knee injury suffered the previous week, showed remarkable resilience. The Falcons mounted an impressive seven-minute drive before halftime, culminating in Jayson Franklin's 5-yard touchdown run that knotted the score at 7-7.

The third quarter evolved into a tactical chess match, with field position proving crucial. West Charlotte appeared poised to break the deadlock when they drove deep into Falcons territory, but a touchdown run by Nichols was nullified by a penalty. The Lions' frustration mounted as they turned the ball over on downs at the 6-yard line.

The decisive moment finally arrived early in the fourth quarter when Nichols found Donte Nicholson for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. The 10-yard scoring strike capped a methodical drive that started at the game's most critical juncture.

Seventy-First mounted two late challenges, recovering a fumble in Lions territory with 6:53 remaining, but the West Charlotte defense stood firm. The Falcons' final desperate drive ended on a botched spike attempt as time expired, setting off a celebration on the Lions' sideline.

The defensive nature of the contest was reflected in the statistics, with both teams finding rushing yards at a premium. West Charlotte's Emory McClain Jr. led all rushers with 47 yards on 14 carries, while the Lions' defense limited Seventy-First to just 46 total rushing yards on 26 attempts.

Davion Jones proved to be Nichols' favorite target, hauling in 8 receptions for 55 yards as the Lions consistently moved the chains through the air. The Falcons' Jytavius Whitted provided several explosive plays in defeat, including a 50-yard reception that set up their lone touchdown.

The victory marked a triumphant culmination for West Charlotte, whose defense proved championship-worthy by holding Seventy-First to just seven points. The Falcons entered the contest averaging significantly more points per game but found themselves stymied by a Lions defensive unit that recorded eight tackles for loss.

For Seventy-First, the loss was particularly bitter given their late opportunities. Despite the absence of their starting quarterback, the Falcons remained within striking distance throughout, a testament to their defensive unit led by Kaiveon Gear and Hector Bautista, who combined for 19 tackles.

The championship represents a crowning achievement for West Charlotte's program, which demonstrated championship mettle in the season's biggest moment. Their blend of efficient offense and suffocating defense proved to be the perfect formula for capturing the 3A crown on a memorable December afternoon in Raleigh.

Tarboro and Corvian Set for Showdown in 1A State Championship

12:00 PM

The stage is set for an electrifying battle as the Tarboro Vikings (13-1) and the Corvian Jaguars (15-0) meet in the 2024 NCHSAA 1A Football State Championship on Saturday, December 21, at 3:00 PM at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. With both teams dominating their competition en route to this title game, fans can expect an unforgettable clash between two contrasting yet equally successful programs.

Contrasting Paths to Raleigh

The Tarboro Vikings, led by veteran head coach Jeff Craddock, have been a juggernaut all season. After suffering their only loss to 3A powerhouse Havelock early in the year, Tarboro responded by steamrolling opponents with a relentless ground game. The Vikings have outscored opponents 51.6 to 9.7 points per game this season, amassing over 4,200 rushing yards behind their signature “Tarboro T” offense.

On the other side, the Corvian Jaguars have taken a meteoric rise in just their second year of playoff football. The Queen City program enters the championship with a perfect 15-0 record, earning respect statewide by defeating three Charlotte-area 4A schools to start the season. The Jaguars’ playoff run was capped by victories over Mount Airy—snapping the state’s longest active winning streak—and perennial contender Mountain Heritage.

Tarboro’s Relentless Ground Game

At the heart of Tarboro’s success is their punishing ground attack. Quarterback Tyler Powell has expertly orchestrated the Vikings' “Tarboro T,” distributing the ball efficiently to a loaded backfield. Senior running back Kamerin McDowell-Moore leads the charge, averaging 99.6 rushing yards per game. He is complemented by Mason Satterfield and Caiden Everette, who together add over 150 rushing yards per game.

While Tarboro leans heavily on the run, Powell has delivered when needed through the air, throwing for 700 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. With such a dominant ground game and a quarterback capable of keeping defenses honest, the Vikings’ offense is built to control the clock and wear down opponents.

Corvian’s Balanced Offensive Attack

The Jaguars’ offense presents a more balanced approach, led by dynamic senior quarterback AJ Jackson Jr. Jackson has accounted for 17 touchdowns through the air and 12 more on the ground, showcasing his versatility as a dual-threat playmaker. He’ll look to connect early and often with star running back Cam Johnson, who has been the centerpiece of the Jaguars’ offense with 24 total touchdowns and nearly 100 rushing yards per game.

Corvian has averaged 41.4 points per game this season while allowing just 8.5 points per contest, proving they can win shootouts and defensive battles alike. Jackson’s ability to stretch the field and Johnson’s consistency on the ground will be key in keeping Tarboro’s defense off balance.

Defensive Battle

Both teams feature physical, hard-hitting defenses that have stifled opponents all season.

For Tarboro, linebacker Cole Craddock leads the team with 132 total tackles and 11 tackles for loss, while Keivious Bridgers (112 tackles) and Tyler Powell (21 tackles for loss) add to an imposing defensive front. Powell has also tallied 21 sacks, making him one of the most disruptive defenders in the state. Add in contributors like Kamerin McDowell-Moore and Gabe Kassnove, who have combined for 140 tackles, and Tarboro’s defense is as formidable as their offense.

The Jaguars’ defense is equally impressive. Junior linebacker Jayden Summers anchors the unit with 117 tackles, while defensive end Adrian Scott has wreaked havoc in opposing backfields with 28 tackles for loss and 14 sacks. On the back end, playmakers like Cam Johnson and AJ Jackson Jr. continue to make their mark. Johnson has contributed over 100 tackles as a defensive back, while Jackson leads the team with six interceptions, showcasing his ability to flip momentum.

Championship Narrative

For Tarboro, this championship represents an opportunity to add another title to their storied history. Their dominant playoff run has included a 71-0 rout of Warren County and a 59-6 win over Wilson Prep in the regional final, underscoring their reputation as one of the state’s premier programs.

For Corvian, the Jaguars are chasing history. In just their second playoff season, they’ve already proven they belong among the state’s elite. Their 21-14 win over Mount Airy and 28-21 victory against Mountain Heritage solidified their place as a team that thrives in big moments.

This matchup pits tradition against rising talent. Tarboro’s bruising ground game and championship pedigree will test Corvian’s balance and resilience. For the Jaguars, the challenge is clear: stop the Vikings’ running attack and seize their moment in Raleigh.

Final Thoughts

With two elite programs colliding for the 1A state title, fans can expect a hard-fought, physical contest. Will Tarboro’s ground-and-pound attack secure another championship for the Vikings, or will Corvian complete their perfect season and claim their first-ever state title?

Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM on Saturday, December 21, at Carter-Finley Stadium. This championship clash is one fans won’t want to miss.

Syracuse Holds Off NC State 24-17 with Strong Aerial Attack

11:23 AM

RALEIGH – Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord threw for 346 yards and two touchdowns as the Orange (5-1, 2-1 ACC) defeated NC State (3-4, 0-3) 24-17 in front of 56,919 fans at Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday night.

The Orange controlled the game's tempo, holding the ball for nearly 37 minutes while converting 8 of 15 third downs. Syracuse's offense generated 25 first downs and 424 total yards despite managing just 78 yards rushing against a stout Wolfpack front.

Jackson Meeks led all receivers with 11 catches for 116 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter that gave Syracuse a commanding 24-7 lead. Trebor Pena added eight receptions for 75 yards, while Oronde Gadsden II contributed six catches for 74 yards.

Syracuse built its lead methodically, starting with Jayden Oh's 32-yard field goal in the first quarter. The Orange extended their advantage to 10-0 in the second quarter when McCord found Umari Hatcher for a 28-yard touchdown strike.

NC State's offense showed explosiveness but lacked consistency, converting just 1 of 6 third downs. Quarterback CJ Bailey completed 17 of 24 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns, but the Wolfpack was hampered by two costly fumbles.

The Wolfpack's Noah Rogers led all NC State receivers with 95 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter that cut Syracuse's lead to 24-14. Hollywood Smothers added three catches for 87 yards for NC State.

Syracuse's defense, led by Justin Barron's eight tackles, sack, and interception, kept pressure on Bailey throughout the night. Barron's 41-yard interception return in the third quarter set up Meeks' touchdown catch.

LeQuint Allen paced Syracuse's ground game with 91 yards on 21 carries, including a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that pushed the Orange lead to 17-7.

NC State mounted a late comeback attempt, with Kanoah Vinesett connecting on a 29-yard field goal with 1:32 remaining to cut the deficit to seven. However, Syracuse ran out the final minutes to secure its fifth win of the season.

The Wolfpack's defense, despite the loss, showed resilience. DK Kaufman led all defenders with 11 tackles, while Devon Betty added 10 tackles and a half tackle for loss.

Syracuse's victory marked its second conference win of the season, while NC State remained winless in ACC play. The Orange's balanced offensive attack produced 346 passing yards and 78 rushing yards, while their defense forced three turnovers and limited NC State to just 82 yards on the ground.

The Wolfpack's explosive passing game generated several big plays, including completions of 75 and 72 yards, but their inability to sustain drives and protect the football proved costly. NC State's two fumbles led to 18 Syracuse points, ultimately providing the difference in the final margin.

NC State Triumphs Over Clemson 24-17 in Thrilling Matchup

9:38 AM

RALEIGH – The NC State Wolfpack delivered an electrifying performance at Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday, securing a 24-17 victory over the Clemson Tigers in a game that had the Wolfpack faithful in a frenzy of excitement when the final horn sounded. With this win, head coach Dave Doeren celebrated his 100th career victory and tied the program record for most wins with 77, alongside Earle Edwards, who set the mark in 1970.

Freshman sensation KC Concepcion stole the show, notching two crucial touchdowns and showcasing his incredible versatility. Concepcion hauled in a 72-yard touchdown pass from quarterback MJ Morris, capping off a remarkable catch-and-run in the third quarter. His performance didn't stop there, as he also led the team in rushing, accumulating 51 yards on the ground.

The game began with a nine-yard touchdown connection between Morris and Concepcion, giving NC State an early 7-0 lead. The Wolfpack extended their lead with a 41-yard field goal from Brayden Narveson after an impressive 55-yard drive. Clemson managed to narrow the gap with a one-yard rushing touchdown from Phil Mafah, bringing the score to 10-7 in favor of NC State.

Just before halftime, Clemson had an opportunity to level the score with a field goal, but an NC State timeout disrupted their plans, keeping the score at 10-7. The game took place on a night when legendary coach Bill Cowher was inducted into the NC State Football Ring of Honor.

In this Friday night showdown, the Wolfpack (3-2, 1-1) managed to force three turnovers but fell short as Louisville (5-0, 3-0) responded with three turnovers of their own. Louisville's offensive prowess prevailed, amassing 306 yards compared to NC State's 201.

The game's pivotal moment arrived when Brock Travelstead, who had earlier missed a 52-yard field goal attempt, connected on a clutch 53-yard field goal with just 5:32 remaining in the contest. This kick gave Louisville their first lead, securing the 13-10 victory that would seal the game's fate.

The Wolfpack had a final opportunity to stage a comeback with 1:44 left on the clock, but a costly interception on the drive's first play handed the Cardinals the ball, ultimately concluding the game.

Offensively, Terrell Timmons, Jr. dazzled with 71 receiving yards, setting a new career best, while Delbert Mimms, III, continued to shine by finding the end zone for the fifth time this season, leading the Wolfpack's offensive efforts.

The first quarter saw both teams struggling to advance, as staunch defensive efforts kept scoring opportunities at bay. It wasn't until the second quarter that the visitors from Louisville attempted a 52-yard field goal, only to come up empty-handed with a wide-right miss.

The lone touchdown for the Wolfpack came from Delbert Mimms, who powered his way into the end zone from four yards out, marking his team-leading fifth touchdown of the season. This touchdown drive was fueled by two fourth-down conversions, including a fake punt executed by Payton Wilson that gained three crucial yards on fourth and one.

Wilson once again showcased his defensive prowess, recording 10 tackles, marking his 18th career game with double-digit tackles. Sean Brown joined the defensive standout list with two sacks and eight tackles. Bishop Fitzgerald snagged his first interception for NC State, while Shyheim Battle secured his sixth career interception, the second-highest on the team.

Defense played a critical role for the Wolfpack, with Brown forcing a crucial quarterback fumble, which Wilson recovered. Although no points followed this turnover, the Wolfpack quickly regained possession thanks to another Louisville mistake.

Battle's interception set up the offense with excellent field position just before halftime. As the clock ticked down, Brayden Narveson drilled a 48-yard field goal, extending NC State's lead to 10-0 at the break.

Louisville finally found the end zone with 6:38 left in the third quarter, as Chris Bell hauled in a 39-yard touchdown pass from Jack Plummer, making it a 10-7 game. Momentum appeared to shift as Louisville forced an Armstrong fumble, which they recovered. The Wolfpack defense held strong once again, forcing a Cardinal field goal that tied the game at 10-10.

The Cardinals' third turnover of the game, courtesy of Fitzgerald's interception in the Red Zone, went unexploited by the Wolfpack's offense.

Looking ahead, the Wolfpack will take a brief hiatus from ACC play as they prepare to host Marshall on October 7 at 2 p.m. at Carter-Finley Stadium. The game will be broadcast on The CW Network.

East Lincoln Wins Third Title in Eleven Years

9:52 PM

RALEIGH – The 3A state championship game, scheduled to be the last game of the 2022 North Carolina high school football season, featured two undefeated teams with dynamic offenses and stingy defenses. In the end, it was turnovers that seemed to make the biggest difference, with East Lincoln’s four turnovers leading the Mustangs to a 30-15 victory and the 3A state championship.

Northern Nash started the game with a bang, with Keno Jones hitting a streaking Randall King for a sixty-six-yard catch and run to get the Knights inside the five-yard line on the second play of the game. Jones scored on a keeper on the next play to put Northern Nash on the board less than a minute into the game. A fumble on East Lincoln’s first play from scrimmage looked like it would be a disaster for the Mustangs, but the East Lincoln defense stepped up and turned Northern Nash over on downs.

Energized by their team’s big defensive stops, the Mustangs offense started to hit their stride later in the quarter. Sophomore running back Christopher Daley II punished the Northern Nash defense, rumbling in from thirty-five yards out to give the Mustangs a 7-6 lead. Keno Jones went deep again on the next Northern Nash drive, hitting Trey Battle for forty-five yards to get the Knights in scoring position. The East Lincoln defense kept the Knights out of the end zone and forced a Bryson Jenkins field goal to end the quarter.

The second quarter belonged to quarterback Tyler Mizzell and the Mustangs. Mizzell threw two beautiful touchdown passes to give East Lincoln a commanding lead going into the half. The first score was a toss to Markell Clark, but it was the fade to Keandre Walker in the back corner of the end zone that had the Mustang faithful on their feet and feeling like they had overcome the costly miscues from earlier in the evening. A Christopher Mileta field goal with no time remaining in the half set the intermission score at 24-9. After a scoreless third quarter, Mileta would add the next points of the game with two fourth-quarter field goals. Keno Jones added a late touchdown pass to Ashton Rhodes to cap the scoring.

Defensively, East Lincoln teetered between giving up big passes to Northern Nash’s speedy outside receivers and making athletic plays to pick off passes. Defensive end Diego Neira picked off a screen pass to set up East Lincoln’s second touchdown of the night. Aiden Terrell and Keandre Walker picked off passes on consecutive drives in the third quarter and Marcel Johnson recovered a fumble early in the fourth quarter to keep Northern Nash off the board.

The win marked the third football state championship for East Lincoln, all within the last eleven seasons. Northern Nash suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 0-2 all-time in state title games.

Mount Airy Defense Stifles Tarboro En Route to 1A Title Victory

5:41 PM

RALEIGH – Mount Airy’s Tyler Mason came into Saturday’s game having scored forty-one touchdowns through fifteen games and needing one-hundred-thirty-seven yards to reach two-thousand yards on the season. The junior lived up to his billing, rushing for three touchdowns and 139 yards and leading his team to the NCHSAA 1A state championship with a 20-7 victory over Tarboro on Saturday afternoon.

The Mount Airy defense entered Saturday afternoon’s 1A state championship against Tarboro giving up less than ten points per game on average. The Granite Bears defense had pitched shutouts in four of its last five regular-season games and two more in the playoffs. Mount Airy was able to hold the Vikings off the scoreboard for the first twenty-seven minutes of the game, finally surrendering a score in the third quarter.

Tarboro finally found its way in the third quarter. After Omarion Lewis picked off a Mount Airy pass and returned it into Granite Bears territory, Vikings running back Mason Satterfield barely broke the goal line on a run around the right side of the formation to get Tarboro on the board for the first time on the afternoon, but it was not enough to dig out of the hold the Vikings found themselves in after surrendering three touchdowns first.

In a twist seen more in 1A football than in other classifications, both team’s quarterbacks made strong defensive efforts on the other side of the ball. Mount Airy’s Ian Gallimore led his team with fourteen tackles and Tarboro’s Omarion Lewis snagged an interception to go along with eight tackles.

The win was the Granite Bears’ seventh title and first since a 2008 win over Williamston. Tarboro, making its sixth straight title game appearance, drops just its second title game in that span.

#16 NC State Holds on for 27-14 Win over Texas Tech

10:47 PM

RALEIGH – Both #16 NC State and Texas Tech came into Saturday night’s game with 2-0 records, with each team struggling with an in-state American Athletic Conference rival and also blowing out an FCS opponent. With both offenses having scored a combined 162 points over the first two weeks, it seemed like a shootout was in the works for the 56,919 fans in attendance in Carter-Finley Stadium. But, it was the NC State defense that shined the brightest on Saturday night as the hometown Wolfpack walked away with a 27-14 win.

The first quarter of the game saw the Wolfpack excelling in two of the three phases of the game. Defensively, the Wolfpack forced a punt on the first three possessions of the game. In special teams, Christopher Dunn hit two field goals and the punt team recovered a muffed punt return by Texas Tech.

After the NC State defense forced yet another punt, the Wolfpack offense began to wake up after their slow start. When a personal foul penalty added fifteen yards to a Devin Leary deep completion to Thayer Thomas, Demie Sumo-Karngbaye became the first Pack player to find the end zone on the evening with a fourteen-yard scoring run on the next play.

Trying desperately to find any offensive momentum in the first half, Texas Tech rolled the dice on the next drive and went for it on a fourth down at the NC State 28-yard line. Defensive end Davin Vann forced Red Raiders quarterback Donovan Smith to hurry the throw and sophomore Aydan White stepped in front of the pass and raced eighty-four yards down the home sideline for the pick-six and a three-score lead. Smith made up for his error on the next drive, hitting Myles Price on a deep pass across the middle for the Red Raiders touchdown.

The third quarter ended up being the only scoreless quarter of the evening. NC State almost got on the board late in the quarter, but a Texas Tech player punched the ball out of Demie Sumo-Karngbaye's hands at the one-yard line and the ball rolled out of the end zone for a touchback.

Opening the fourth quarter, Texas Tech tried its luck again as the Red Raiders decided to go for it on fourth down at their own 35 yard line, but they stopped short of the first down marker. Sensing a chance to put the game away, NC State came out with a halfback pass from Thayer Thomas to Demie Sumo-Karngbaye on the next play for a Wolfpack TD.

Even after Texas Tech quarterback Donovan Smith made it a two score-game again with a three-yard keeper, the NC State defense stepped up with Jakeen Harris picking off Smith on the Raiders’ next possession. When Aydan White intercepted his second pass of the night with one minute left in the game, NC State was able to run out the clock and celebrate a 3-0 start to the season.

Notable North Carolinians

Thayer Thomas (Heritage) – the graduate receiver caught 4 passes and even threw for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Aydan White (Asheville Christ School) – the sophomore cornerback had an eighty-six-yard pick-six in the third quarter and a second interception to seal the game later on.

Payton Wilson (Orange) – the redshirt junior linebacker led the team with nine tackles for a defense that only gave up fifty-four rushing yards.

Next Week

Both teams are at home next week as NC State (3-0) hosts UConn at Carter-Finley Stadium while Texas Tech (2-1) invites in-state rival and the #21 ranked Texas Longhorns to Lubbock.

FOOTBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME NOTES

As far back as NCHSAA Playoff Bracket Records go (1972) this year marks the first time that there has not been at least one unbeaten team in the State Championship Games.

The last time there were no unbeaten State Champions in the NCHSAA was in 2000. The lone unbeaten team to reach the State Championship Games that year was 4A South View, which fell to Independence 24-19 beginning the Patriots' unprecedented run of 7-straight State Championships.

Prior to 2000, the only other time in NCHSAA Playoff Bracket Records (1972) that there was not an unbeaten State Champion in NCHSAA play was in 1991 when the lone unbeaten to reach the State Championships was 4A West Charlotte which fell to South View 10-7.

Programs participating in this weekend’s State Championship Games have combined for 36 State Championships. The programs have posted a combined all-time (since 1972) playoff record of 468-185 (.717) in NCHSAA competition.

The 2A Championship Game features the two winningest programs in this weekend’s finals. Shelby and Wallace-Rose Hill have combined for 18 State Championships in NCHSAA play and have a combined 196 wins against just 55 losses in the playoffs since 1972.

Tarboro and Chambers are tied for the most consecutive State Championship appearances. This marks the fourth straight year for both schools reaching the State Championship Game.

Shelby has the most prolific passing attack of the teams remaining in this year’s State Finals. The Golden Lions have passed for 3759 yards this season on 232-364 attempts with 47 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions.

Wallace-Rose Hill has the most rushing yards of any team remaining this weekend. The Bulldogs have run for 6679 yards this season on 578 attempts with 92 touchdowns. They are averaging 445.3 yards per game on the ground and will finish the season with the most rushing yards in a season for any NCHSAA program.

Kanye Roberts from Wallace-Rose Hill leads the NCHSAA in rushing yards this season piling up 3250 yards on 260 carries. He is averaging 216.7 yards per game and has 53 touchdowns on the year. He currently sits 12th on the All-Time NCHSAA single-season rushing list and needs just 60 yards in the SCG to pass Elijah Hood (Charlotte Catholic) and Quan Warley (Thomasville) for 10th and 11th all-time respectively.

NC State Cruises to 34-6 Win Over ECU in Season Opener

3:21 PM
RALEIGH – Coming into Saturday afternoon’s game against East Carolina, NC State had significant question marks on offense after losing their top playmakers to graduation. Half of the career starts for the entire Wolfpack offense coming into the game were by two members of their offensive line. No returning players had ever made a start at quarterback, running back, center, or left tackle. The inexperience didn’t phase the Wolfpack, though, as redshirt sophomore quarterback Matthew McKay (making his first career start) eclipsed the 300-yard mark in a 34-6 win over East Carolina.

East Carolina started the game on fire behind the arm and legs of sophomore Holton Ahlers. The Greenville native started the game 6-6 on the first drive and moved the Pirates inside the Wolfpack 10-yard line, but a big hit by State’s Tanner Ingle loosened the ball from Ahlers’s grip at the goal line and it was recovered by Jarius Morehead for the touchback.

NC State wasted no time seizing the opportunity to get their new offense out on the field. Two runs by Ricky Person and catches by Thayer Thomas put the Wolfpack into scoring position in a hurry and freshman Zonovan Knight punched it in from nine yards out to give the home team an early 7-0 lead.

The Pirates got on the scoreboard on the next drive with a 47-yard Jake Verity field goal to bring the Pirates within four points, a margin that would carry into the second quarter. ECU tried to make it a one-point game early in the second quarter, but a 52-yard field goal attempt went wide. NC State drove down to the ECU 9-yard line but was forced to settle for a 27-yard Christopher Dunn Field goal. When a busted play resulted in another NC State touchdown late in the half, it was clear that fate was on the side of the Wolfpack on this afternoon.

NC State made it a three-score game in the third quarter when McKay found a streaking Tabari Hines down the right sideline for a 48-yard score for the only points of the third quarter. The fourth quarter went like the rest of the game with the ECU offense unable to get much movement due to a swarming NC State defense and the Wolfpack offense methodically moving down the field. When Matthew McKay went 21 yards on a keeper around the left side and hit the end zone, it was the final exclamation point on the day.

With the victory today, NC State has now won ten straight home openers and all seen under head coach Dave Doeren. Both teams will face in-state FCS opponents next Saturday as NC State (1-0) hosts Western Carolina of the Southern Conference while ECU (1-0) hosts the Big South’s Gardner-Webb.

Notable North Carolinians
Matthew McKay (Wakefield) – The redshirt sophomore went 25 of 37 for 308 yards and a score in his first-ever start at quarterback. He also rushed for two touchdowns on the afternoon.

Chris Ingram (Mooresville) – The junior cornerback picked off one pass and led the team with seven solo tackles

Christopher Dunn (North Davidson) – The sophomore kicker was good from 27 and 34 yards out, 4-4 on PAT attempts, and routinely made the Pirates start deep in their own territory.

10:23 PM

The Vikings were dominant on the ground racking up 442 yards rushing while holding the Cardinals to zero yards rushing in the game.

East Surry jumped out to an early lead as Gunnar Jones recovered a Tarboro fumble and too it 18 yards to the end zone to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead with 4:02 to go in the first quarter. The Vikings answered on the ensuing possession driving 69 yards in six plays Kimani McDaniels capped off the drive with a 36-yard touchdown run with 47 seconds to go in the quarter to knot the score at 7.

Clifton Joyner, Jr. gave Tarboro their first lead of the game when he scored from 17 yards out on the ground with 8:34 to go in the second quarter. That capped a 29-yard drive took just five plays after a Keon Caudle punt return set Tarboro up with a short field. East Surry sliced into that lead, mounting a 16-play drive that chewed up 6:35 of the second quarter and culminated in a 24-yard field goal by Derek Sutterby to make it 14-10 Tarboro at the half.

1AA MVP Kimani McDaniels
The second half was all Vikings as McDaniels opened the third quarter by breaking a 65-yard run for a touchdown with 10:16 to go in the quarter. McDaniels long sprint made it 21-10. McDaniels finished the game with 112 yards rushing and two touchdowns as he was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Just three minutes after McDaniels long run, Joyner, Jr. found paydirt on a one-yard touchdown run to put the Vikings up 29-10 after the two-point conversion attempt was successful. Joyner, Jr. finished the game with 76 yards rushing on 12 carries with two touchdowns as he was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player for Tarboro.

Caudle added a touchdown late in the third quarter, crossing from 40 yards out with just 11 seconds to go in the quarter, putting Tarboro up 36-10. Jaquez Edge scored from four yards out with 9:47 to go in the game, punctuating a six-play, 56-yard drive and extending the Viking lead to 43-10. Caudle closed out the scoring with a 33-yard sprint to the end zone with 4:37 to go in the game to give the Vikings the final 50-10 margin.

Melik Ward was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player for Tarboro as he racked up 8 tackles, including 2.5 sacks and 3 tackles for loss in the game. For East Surry, Hoyt Bullington led the team in tackles with 19 in the game, including three for loss as he was selected East Surry’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player. Jefferson Boaz was the Most Outstanding Offensive Player for East Surry, completing 10 of 20 passes for 122 yards and averaging 38.8 yards per punt.

Shelby Wins Fifth Title in Six Years After 42-21 Win Over North Davidson

8:18 PM
RALEIGH, NC - The Shelby Golden Lions jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter and did not look back on their way to doubling up North Davidson 42-21 and winning the school’s tenth NCHSAA State Championship in football.

Sophomore linebacker Jack Hollifield got the festivities underway, intercepting a pass and returning it 93 yards for a touchdown with 6:23 to go in the first quarter, putting Shelby up 7-0. Hollifield was named the Golden Lions Most Outstanding Defensive Player with nine tackles, a tackle for loss, a pass break-up and the 93-yard interception return for a score.

The Golden Lion defense then forced a three-and-out on the ensuing Knights possession, and after a nice punt return, Shelby had exceptional field position to start their drive at the Knights 38. Diavonni Daley capped off the 5-play, 38-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown catch from Isaiah Bess to put the Lions in front 14-0.

Shelby kept the foot on the gas pedal to start the second quarter, as Daley hauled in a 22-yard pass from Bess to cap a nine-play, 54-yard drive and give the Lions a 21-0 advantage with 10:45 to play in the first half. Bess finished the contest with 192 yards and three touchdown passes as he completed 17 of his 26 pass attempts and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Daley hauled in six passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns as he was selected as Shelby’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player in the game.

North Davidson responded on their next possession, sprinting 72 yards in just 8 plays and two minutes. The Knights got on the board with Devon Welch’s three-yard touchdown plunge to trim the Shelby lead to 21-7 which is how the teams entered the locker room at the half.

2AA MVP Isaiah Bess
The Lions started to pull away for good with an 18-yard touchdown pass by Bess to Fabian Pettis with 2:15 to go in the third. That touchdown finished off a 10-play 63-yard drive that chewed up 4:07 of clock. The Knights answered right back with an 11-play drive of their own that went 50 yards and spanned 4:45 to cut the lead to 28-14 when Jackson Perrell scored on a three-yard touchdown run.

The two teams traded scores for the rest of the contest with Donye Fuller plunging in from a yard out for the Golden Lions before Gage Williams recovered a Shelby fumble, rumbling 15 yards for a score to trim the Shelby lead back to 14 at 35-21 and 4:48 to go. Jaylon Scott put the game away for the Golden Lions when he scored from one yard out to polish off a 9-play, 49-yard drive at the 1:15 mark of the final quarter.

The North Davidson defense was led by Blake Stephens who collected 10 tackles on the game including 3.5 sacks and 4 tackles for loss. He is also credited with a pass break-up and quarterback hurry in the game as he was named North Davidson’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player. The Knight was led by Themus Fulks who was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player for the Knights with eight receptions for 146 yards on the afternoon.

5:01 PM
RALEIGH, NC – The Reidsville Rams stormed from down 14 much of the game to stun Northeastern with a 31-28 win as Zach Baber hit a 24-yard field goal to give Reidsville its first and only lead with just four seconds remaining in the game. The win gave Reidsville their program’s 17th NCHSAA Football State Championship and their second state title in the last three years.
