Gardner-Webb fires football coach Kris McCullough after one game; Pete Bennett takes over as interim coach

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner Webb University has dismissed head football coach Kris McCullough, ending a tenure that lasted one game and placing the Runnin’ Bulldogs under interim leadership early in the 2026 season.

McCullough, hired in December 2025, arrived in Boiling Springs as a rising offensive mind after successful head coaching stops at East Central and UT Permian Basin. His hiring followed the departure of former coach Cris Reisert, who led Gardner Webb for two seasons, including a 7 5 campaign in 2025, before leaving to become Toledo’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. McCullough inherited a program that had experienced recent postseason success under Tre Lamb and remained competitive in conference play, but his Gardner Webb tenure ended before it could develop beyond the opening week.

University officials announced that McCullough’s contract had been terminated, effective immediately, and said the school would have no additional comment. The dismissal came two days after Gardner Webb suspended him pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation; the university has not publicly disclosed the cause of the investigation or the reason for the firing. McCullough coached one game for the Bulldogs, a 35 17 season opening loss at Austin Peay.

Special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Pete Bennett will continue as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2026 season. The move continues a period of transition for Gardner Webb football, which has now gone from Tre Lamb to Reisert to McCullough to Bennett in a short span. The program’s recent history has included conference titles, FCS playoff appearances and a rebuilt identity, but frequent leadership changes have made sustained momentum difficult.

Gardner Webb now turns its focus to stabilizing the season while determining its next long term direction. Bennett inherits a team still near the beginning of its schedule, with the Bulldogs trying to regroup quickly after an abrupt coaching change and a season opening loss. Gardner Webb is scheduled to continue its road swing next week at Wofford, with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Spartanburg.

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb has turned to one of college football’s fastest-rising young coaches to lead its program into a new era. Vice President and Director of Athletics Brendan Fahey announced that Kris McCullough, the record‑setting head coach at Texas‑Permian Basin, has been hired as the next head football coach of the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

McCullough, 30, arrives in Boiling Springs with a résumé that reads like a decade’s worth of momentum compressed into a few remarkable seasons. Hired at UTPB in December 2022 as the youngest head coach in college football, he quickly transformed the Falcons into a Division II contender. His debut season produced a 10‑2 record, the first Lone Star Conference championship in school history, and a national ranking as high as No. 18. Two years later, he delivered the best season the program had ever seen: 11 wins, a trip to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, and a No. 3 final ranking in the AFCA poll.

Across his two playoff seasons at UTPB, McCullough’s teams became known for explosive offense, disciplined defense, and a knack for developing talent. The 2025 Falcons ranked among the nation’s best in passing offense, total yards, total touchdowns, and pass defense, while linebacker Tristan Exline emerged as a Harlon Hill Trophy finalist. In all, 27 players earned All‑Lone Star Conference honors last fall.

Fahey said those results—and the culture behind them—made McCullough the clear choice.

“Kris’s proven track record speaks for itself,” Fahey said. “He has built a culture of excellence both on and off the field. His ability to recruit elite talent, develop players, and win championships makes him an ideal leader here at Gardner‑Webb.”

Before his rise at UTPB, McCullough engineered a dramatic turnaround at East Central University, guiding the Tigers to a 9‑3 season and a Heritage Bowl victory in 2022—their best campaign since 1993. His earlier stops included Fairmont State, Old Dominion, and Henderson State, where he began his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant.

McCullough has collected a long list of accolades along the way, including 2023 Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year and national “Under‑40” and “Under‑35” recognitions from Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, AFCA, and 247Sports.

A native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, McCullough said he and his family are eager to join the Gardner‑Webb community.

“This is an awesome opportunity and a program with rich history,” he said. “It will take every Runnin’ Bulldog to continue to move this program forward. Sko Dawgs.” 

CULLOWHEE – In a wild back-and-forth affair at E.J. Whitmire Stadium, Gardner-Webb overcame a 21-7 first-quarter deficit to defeat Western Carolina 52-45 in a game that featured 97 total points and multiple lead changes on Saturday afternoon.

The Runnin' Bulldogs' remarkable comeback was powered by quarterback Nate Hampton, who accounted for 393 yards of offense and six touchdowns while engineering one of the most memorable finishes in recent memory between these two programs.

Early Fireworks Set the Tone

The scoring began quickly when Gardner-Webb's Quasean Holmes broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run just 2:16 into the game, capping a brief two-play, 65-yard drive. However, Western Carolina had an immediate answer when Patrick Boyd Jr. took a handoff 28 yards to the house on the very next possession, requiring just one play and six seconds to tie the game at 7-7.

The Catamounts seized control in the first quarter's final minutes. After forcing a Gardner-Webb punt, Western Carolina needed only three plays to find the end zone again, with Camury Reid punching in a three-yard touchdown run to cap a nine-play, 64-yard drive. The Catamounts weren't finished, as they added another quick score when Bennett Judy connected with James Tyre for a five-yard touchdown pass, pushing their advantage to 21-7 entering the second quarter.

Boyd Jr. was particularly effective early, rushing for 142 yards on 15 carries with one touchdown, consistently finding holes in the Gardner-Webb defense. His 70-yard breakaway run in the third quarter demonstrated the big-play capability that kept the Catamounts competitive throughout.

Offensive Explosion in the Second Quarter

The second quarter belonged to Western Carolina's aerial attack. Isaac Lee, who entered the game as the backup quarterback, delivered the play of the day with a 69-yard touchdown strike to Malik Knight that extended the Catamounts' lead to 35-7. The connection showcased Western Carolina's ability to strike quickly through the air, as Lee finished 3-of-9 for 82 yards and the touchdown.

Gardner-Webb began chipping away at the deficit late in the second quarter. Hampton found Anthony Lowe for an 18-yard touchdown pass, capping a methodical nine-play, 75-yard drive. The Runnin' Bulldogs added another score just before halftime when Hampton powered in from one yard out, making it 35-20 at the break.

Hampton's rushing ability proved crucial throughout the contest. The dual-threat quarterback carried the ball 28 times for 130 net yards and four rushing touchdowns, consistently finding ways to extend drives and put points on the board. His four rushing touchdowns tied for the game high alongside his two passing scores.

Western Carolina's Balanced Attack

The Catamounts demonstrated impressive offensive balance, accumulating 454 total yards. Judy, the primary quarterback, completed 15 of 27 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns while managing the game effectively. His connection with Tyre proved particularly reliable, as the receiver hauled in five catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Western Carolina's ground game complemented their passing attack well. Beyond Boyd Jr.'s explosive runs, Branson Adams contributed 66 yards on 12 carries, providing steady production between the tackles. The Catamounts' offensive line created consistent running lanes, allowing the team to control possession for extended periods.

Defensively, Western Carolina forced some key turnovers, including Hasaan Sykes' 61-yard interception return that set up a scoring opportunity. The Catamounts also recovered a fumble, showing their ability to create short fields for their offense.

The Gardner-Webb Rally

The third quarter saw Gardner-Webb begin their methodical climb back into contention. Hampton connected with Lowe again, this time for a 36-yard touchdown that brought the Runnin' Bulldogs within 42-28. The scoring drive covered 75 yards in six plays, with Hampton showing his arm strength on the decisive throw.

Western Carolina answered quickly with Reid's second rushing touchdown, a one-yard plunge that maintained their two-touchdown advantage. However, Gardner-Webb's offense was just getting started.

The fourth quarter transformed into a showcase for Hampton's leadership and playmaking ability. He rushed for two more touchdowns, including a spectacular 26-yard run that gave Gardner-Webb their first lead of the game at 52-42 with 1:48 remaining.

Special Teams and Field Position Battle

Both kickers played significant roles in the outcome. Gardner-Webb's Charles Viorel converted a crucial 22-yard field goal with 2:36 remaining to give his team a 45-42 lead, though he also missed a 41-yard attempt earlier in the fourth quarter. Western Carolina's Christian Lowery answered with a 29-yard field goal with 42 seconds left, setting up the dramatic finish.

The punting game also influenced field position throughout. Gardner-Webb's Brady Braun averaged 54 yards on two punts, including a 55-yard boot that helped flip field position in the third quarter. Western Carolina's Stephen Brantley handled seven punts with a 43.3-yard average, consistently pinning Gardner-Webb deep in their own territory.

Defensive Standouts

Despite the high-scoring affair, several defensive players made their mark. Gardner-Webb's Jamari Young led all tacklers with 11 stops, while Sabin McLaughlin added eight tackles in support. For Western Carolina, Hayward McQueen Jr. paced the defense with 15 total tackles, showcasing his range across the field.

The defenses struggled to contain the opposing offenses consistently, but both units managed key stops at crucial moments. Western Carolina's pass defense, led by Cam'Ron Dabney's four pass breakups, helped slow Gardner-Webb's aerial attack at times.

Both teams face significant challenges next week as they step up in competition level. Gardner-Webb will travel to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech, while Western Carolina heads to Winston-Salem to battle Wake Forest.

BOILING SPRINGS – After a 2024 season that fell short of expectations, Gardner-Webb football is entering the 2025 campaign with a chip on its shoulder, and the belief that it can get back to championship form. The Runnin’ Bulldogs participated in last week’s Big South-OVC Football Media Day with head coach Cris Reisert speaking confidently about the program’s progress, culture, and roster upgrades as they look to bounce back in Year 2 of his tenure.

Picked to finish tied for sixth in the 2025 preseason coaches poll, Gardner-Webb finds itself in the middle of a crowded conference field that saw four teams share the title a year ago. Tennessee Tech topped the poll with 57 points and five first-place votes, just ahead of perennial contender UT Martin and Southeast Missouri.

For Gardner-Webb, the underdog label could be a blessing. After winning back-to-back conference titles in 2022 and 2023, the program slipped to 4-8 last fall. But Reisert believes that version of the Bulldogs is in the rearview mirror.

“We’ve had a tremendous offseason in the weight room and on the field,” Reisert said. “We’ve got 18 returning starters and 15 others who’ve played significant snaps. The roster is healthier and deeper, and we’re hungry.”

Much of the preseason attention revolves around the quarterback battle. With the departure of Tyler Riddell, Gardner-Webb is sorting through a three-man competition featuring FBS transfers Cole Pennington (Marshall) and Nate Hampton (Liberty), along with decorated freshman Finley Polk. Polk arrives with eye-popping high school numbers, over 10,000 career passing yards and 121 touchdowns, though the job is expected to come down to one of the veteran transfers.

The Bulldogs also leaned hard into the transfer portal this offseason, adding 45 new players, including 15 from FBS programs. On offense, key additions include receivers Markel Fortenberry (Liberty), Chris Lofton (James Madison), and Jalen Harris (Coastal Carolina), along with tight end Gatlin Hancock (Kennesaw State). Defensively, linebacker Sabin McLaughlin (Davidson) and safety David Laney (North Carolina A&T) bring experience and depth to a group that returns key playmakers.

Several of those returners earned preseason recognition across the conference. Running back Quasean Holmes, wide receiver Anthony Lowe, tight end Cole Schneider, linebacker Jackson Marshall, and defensive lineman Antonio O’Berry all landed on the OVC-Big South Preseason Players to Watch lists. Lowe, a graduate student, was selected at three positions, wide receiver, kick returner, and punt returner, highlighting his value as an all-purpose threat.

On defense, O’Berry and Robert Holtz combined for 12.5 sacks last season, while safety Wendell McClain returns to anchor the secondary after a 36-tackle, three-interception campaign. Marshall, a redshirt junior linebacker, adds stability in the middle.

Reisert credits much of the team’s renewed focus to a cultural reset rooted in the program’s core values: being Christ-centered, relationship-driven, and process-based. He emphasizes the Japanese philosophy of “Kaizen,” or continuous improvement, as a daily goal for players and staff alike.

“We’re focused on small wins every day,” Reisert said. “That’s how we’ll build momentum and create lasting change.”

Gardner-Webb opens the season on August 30 with a road trip to Western Carolina. A home date against The Citadel follows on September 13, and the Bulldogs will again play a full eight-game conference slate beginning in October. Non-conference matchups include a major test against FBS opponent Georgia Tech.

With a balanced mix of experience, transfer talent, and culture-first leadership, Gardner-Webb looks to surprise the league and return to championship contention.

“We don’t shy away from the expectations here,” Reisert said. “We’ve done it before, and we believe we’re built to do it again.”

CHARLOTTE – The Charlotte 49ers staged a remarkable fourth-quarter comeback to edge out the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs 27-26 at Jerry Richardson Stadium on Saturday night.

First Half Domination

Gardner-Webb dominated the first half, building a commanding 17-0 lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs opened the scoring with a 30-yard field goal by Jay Billingsley in the first quarter. Their defense then made a significant impact, with Trevor Moffitt returning an interception 45 yards for a touchdown. Gardner-Webb's offense continued to shine, capping off an impressive 99-yard drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Riddell to Anthony Lowe just before halftime.

Charlotte managed to get on the board with a 54-yard field goal by Stephen Rusnak as time expired in the second quarter, leaving the halftime score at 17-3 in favor of Gardner-Webb.

Second Half Turnaround

The third quarter saw Gardner-Webb extend their lead to 20-3 with another Billingsley field goal. Charlotte responded with a field goal of their own, making it 20-6 heading into the final quarter.

The game took a dramatic turn in the fourth quarter as Charlotte mounted an impressive comeback. The 49ers scored 21 unanswered points, beginning with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Trexler Ivey to O'Mega Blake. Ivey, who came in to replace the injured starter Deshawn Purdie, then connected with Sean Brown for another touchdown and a successful two-point conversion, tying the game at 20-20.

Charlotte's defense forced a crucial turnover, and the offense capitalized immediately with Hahsaun Wilson breaking free for a 39-yard touchdown run, giving the 49ers their first lead of the game at 27-20.

Final Minutes Drama

Gardner-Webb showed resilience, responding with a touchdown drive of their own. Carson Gresock punched in a 1-yard run to bring the Runnin' Bulldogs within one point. However, the ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving Charlotte with a narrow 27-26 lead.

The 49ers managed to recover the onside kick attempt and held on for the victory, completing their largest comeback in the program's FBS history.

The NC State Wolfpack hosted the Western Carolina Catamounts in what turned out to be a high-scoring affair. The game started with a bang as Western Carolina's Cole Gonzales connected with Jake Young for an 8-yard touchdown pass, putting the Catamounts up 7-0 early in the first quarter.

NC State quickly responded, with quarterback Grayson McCall finding Kevin "KC" Concepcion for a 17-yard touchdown strike. The two teams traded blows throughout the first half, entering halftime tied at 14-14.

The third quarter saw NC State begin to pull away. Kicker Kanoah Vinesett nailed a 46-yard field goal to give the Wolfpack their first lead of the game. However, Western Carolina wasn't done fighting. Branson Adams burst through for a 17-yard touchdown run, putting the Catamounts back on top 21-17.

From there, it was all NC State. McCall and Concepcion connected for two more touchdowns, while running back Jordan Waters sealed the deal with a pair of rushing scores, including a 50-yard breakaway run in the fourth quarter.

McCall finished the day with an impressive stat line, completing 26 of 40 passes for 318 yards and three touchdowns. Concepcion was his favorite target, hauling in 9 receptions for 121 yards and all three of McCall's touchdown passes. Waters led the ground attack with 123 yards and two scores on 20 carries.

For Western Carolina, Gonzales put up a valiant effort, throwing for 211 yards and two touchdowns. AJ Colombo was his top receiver, catching 9 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Despite the loss, Western Carolina showed they could hang with a tough NC State team, but the Wolfpack's offensive firepower proved too much in the end.

North Carolina Edges Out Minnesota in a Defensive Battle, 19-17

In a game dominated by defense and special teams, the North Carolina Tar Heels squeaked out a narrow victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 19-17.

The first quarter was a defensive stalemate, with neither team able to find the end zone. The scoring drought was finally broken early in the second quarter when UNC's Max Johnson punched in a 3-yard touchdown run. Minnesota answered quickly, with Marcus Major scoring on a 5-yard run to tie the game at 7-7.

The Gophers took the lead just before halftime on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Max Brosmer, sending Minnesota into the locker room up 14-7.

The second half belonged to North Carolina's special teams, particularly kicker Noah Burnette. Burnette was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts, including a booming 52-yarder in the third quarter. His clutch 45-yard kick with just 1:44 left in the game proved to be the difference-maker.

Minnesota had one last chance to win, but Dragan Kesich's 47-yard field goal attempt as time expired sailed wide, securing the victory for North Carolina.

Wofford Edges Out Gardner-Webb in a Nail-Biter, 21-20

In a thrilling season opener at Spangler Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C., the Wofford Terriers narrowly defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in a back-and-forth battle that came down to the wire.

Gardner-Webb struck first, capitalizing on excellent field position thanks to Anthony Lowe's 41-yard kickoff return. The drive stalled at the Wofford 32, but Jay Billingsley's 44-yard field goal put the Runnin' Bulldogs up 3-0 early in the first quarter.

Wofford responded with an impressive 82-yard drive, capped off by a 17-yard touchdown pass from Amari Odom to Kyle Watkins. A successful two-point conversion put the Terriers up 8-3.

The seesaw battle continued as Gardner-Webb reclaimed the lead with a 67-yard drive, culminating in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Riddell to Giovanni Adopte. The teams traded field goals before halftime, with Gardner-Webb holding a slim 13-11 lead at the break.

The Runnin' Bulldogs seemed to take control early in the third quarter. A crucial defensive play by Jackson Marshall, who sacked Odom and forced a fumble, set up Edward Saydee's 32-yard touchdown run on the very next play. This extended Gardner-Webb's lead to 20-11.

The season kicks off with Southeast Missouri facing North Alabama in the FCS Kickoff Classic on August 24, with other teams like Eastern Illinois and Gardner-Webb starting their campaigns shortly after. The competition promises to be intense, culminating in an eight-game round-robin schedule and an automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs for the Association champion.

The Big South-OVC Football Association is all set to kick off its second year with an action-packed schedule for the 2024 season. The Association, which comprises nine league teams, has each team playing an eight-game conference schedule.

The season commences on Saturday, September 7, with the majority of the Association games scheduled between Weeks 5 and 13. Additionally, one game each will be held during Weeks 2 and 4. Fans can look forward to four Association matchups in seven of the weeks.

The season opener will see 2023 co-champion UT Martin taking on Southeast Missouri. Fast forward to September 28, and we’ll witness 2023 co-champion Gardner-Webb hosting Tennessee Tech. This game is particularly noteworthy as it features the Association’s newest head coaches – Cris Reisert of GWU and Bobby Wilder of TTU.

One of the highlights of the schedule is the October 5 game, where Gardner-Webb will face off against UT Martin. This game is a rematch of the league’s inaugural co-champions. Both teams had an impressive run in the 2023 Big South-OVC play with 5-1 records. However, the Runnin’ Bulldogs clinched the automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs with their victory over the Skyhawks in a head-to-head match. On the same day, new Association member Western Illinois will play its first Big South-OVC contest at Charleston Southern.

MACON, GA – In a hard-fought battle on the gridiron, the Mercer Bears emerged victorious against the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs in the first round of the FCS Playoffs, ending the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ season with a final score of 17-7 on Saturday afternoon.

The game showcased intense defensive efforts from both teams, with Mercer ultimately prevailing through a combination of standout plays and resilient defense.

The Bears’ Carter Peevy wasted no time asserting his dominance in the second quarter, scoring both of Mercer’s touchdowns in a four-minute window. Peevy’s 2-yard run in the second quarter set the tone offensively and he continued to dazzle with a spectacular 72-yard touchdown run, expanding Mercer’s lead to 14-0.

Gardner-Webb, however, answered back before halftime. Quarterback Jaylen King connected with Karim Page for a 3-yard touchdown pass, closing the gap to 14-7, and entering the locker room with hopes of a second-half comeback.

The third quarter saw both teams locked in a defensive struggle, with neither side yielding significant ground. Gardner-Webb’s Jay Billingsley attempted a 45-yard field goal that went wide left, maintaining Mercer’s lead. Mercer matched possessions with a missed field goal of their own to keep it scoreless heading into the final stanza.

As the game progressed, the Mercer defense proved formidable, forcing turnovers and limiting Gardner-Webb’s offensive opportunities. Despite Gardner-Webb’s defense, highlighted by Ty French’s three sacks, Mercer’s Reice Griffith sealed the deal with a 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, extending the lead to its final margin.

Gardner-Webb fought hard in the closing minutes, attempting to mount a comeback, but Mercer’s defense stood strong. A pair of interceptions by Mercer on Gardner-Webb’s final two drives sealed the fate of the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs ended the 2023 season as back-to-back conference champions for the first time in two decades with the first-ever set of back-to-back postseason appearances. Gardner-Webb finished a perfect 5-0 at home for only the second time in team history.

Saturday night’s ACC Network game from Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh will be the 113th meeting between the NC State Wolfpack and the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Tar Heels, recovering from a loss at Clemson, are preparing to face their rivals in the final game of the 2023 regular season. The Tar Heels’ offense, which averages 38.1 points per game, is the 12th highest nationally, and they’ve been successful on third downs, converting 49.7% of them. Quarterback Drake Maye and running back Omarion Hampton have been key players, with Maye throwing at least one touchdown pass in 10 of the 11 games this season and Hampton rushing for 100 yards in six consecutive games.

On the other side, the Wolfpack have been formidable opponents under the guidance of head coach Dave Doeren, the winningest coach in school history with 80 wins at NC State. They are one of only four teams in the Power 5 that have won eight or more games in each of the last four seasons. Their defense, which leads the ACC in total defense and scoring defense vs. league opponents, has been particularly impressive. In the last nine games, the Wolfpack defense has allowed just 88.5 rushing yards per game. During that span, three opponents have rushed for less than 100 yards. This game promises to be a thrilling end to the regular season, with both teams bringing their A-game to the field for bragging rights and a claim to best FBS team in the state.

NCAA Division II Playoffs (Round 2)

Lenoir-Rhyne vs Benedict: The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears are set to face the Benedict Tigers in the NCAA Division II playoffs this Saturday. The Bears have had a strong season, with an 11-1 record and an average of 40.17 points per game. Their rushing game is led by Dwayne McGee, who has gained 1213 yards with an average of 110.27 yards per game. In the passing game, Jalen Ferguson has completed 111 out of 154 attempts, throwing for 1468 yards and 16 touchdowns. The receiving corps is led by DeAree Rogers, who has made 43 catches for 621 yards and 6 touchdowns. On defense, Jon Ross Maye leads the team with 86 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. The Bears' defense has been particularly effective, with 35 sacks and 13 interceptions this season. The team's overall performance has been impressive, with an average of 443.7 yards per game. NCAA FCS Playoffs (Round )

Gardner-Webb vs. Mercer: This Saturday, the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, under the guidance of Head Coach Tre Lamb, a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award, will face off against the Mercer Bears in the NCAA FCS playoffs. The Bulldogs have had a strong season, with back-to-back conference championships for the first time since 2002 and 2003, and an undefeated home record. Their offense, led by Lamb, has been aggressive, averaging 34.7 points per game in conference games and converting 24 of their 37 fourth-down attempts. On the defensive end, Ty French has set a new school record for career sacks with 30.5 and has been named a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award. The Bulldogs have a record of 9-36 against FCS teams ranked inside the national polls, but they defeated #13/14 UT Martin earlier this season. North Carolina Central vs. Richmond: This Saturday at 3pm, the NCAA FCS playoff game between North Carolina Central and Richmond is set to be a thrilling showdown. NCCU, with a record of 9-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play, has been a force to reckon with this season. They have outscored their opponents 403 to 296, averaging 36.64 points per game. Their rushing attack, led by Latrell Collier with 684 yards and 8 touchdowns, and Davius Richard with 579 yards and 15 touchdowns, has been particularly potent. Richard has also been impressive in the passing game, completing 60.98% of his passes for 1915 yards and 20 touchdowns. On the receiving end, Devin Smith and Joaquin Davis have been key contributors, with 505 and 404 receiving yards respectively. On the defensive side, Jayden Flaker leads the team with 74 total tackles and 4.5 sacks. With a rare appearance in the FCS playoffs, NCCU is poised to give a tough fight to the University of Richmond.

Honoring NCCFB Legend Armanti Edwards 

App State vs. Georgia Southern: App State will host Georgia Southern at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone in a game that will be broadcast on ESPNU Saturday afternoon at 3:30. App State leads the series 21-16-1 overall and 14-5-1 in Boone. Leading the Mountaineers’ offense is quarterback Joey Aguilar with 2,975 passing yards and 29 touchdowns, receiver Kaedin Robinson with 45 catches for 609 yards and 8 touchdowns, and running back Nate Noel with 787 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. Andrew Parker Jr. paces the App State defense with 98 tackles. The game will be a significant event, as it's not only the regular-season finale but also Senior Day, and the retirement of QB Armanti Edwards’ No. 14 jersey will take place at halftime. App State is also vying for a Sun Belt Championship Game berth. The team needs to beat Georgia Southern and have JMU win at Coastal Carolina to advance to face West champ Troy on Dec. 2.

As the clock struck noon on Selection Sunday, football fans across the nation eagerly tuned in to witness the unveiling of the 2023 FCS playoff bracket. The anticipation reached its peak as the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee revealed the field of 24 teams competing for the prestigious title.

Two teams from North Carolina, Gardner-Webb and North Carolina Central, found themselves among the chosen few. For the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, it was a testament to their resilience throughout a challenging season. Despite facing one of the toughest nonconference schedules in FCS football, the Runnin' Bulldogs secured significant victories against Elon and #13 UT Martin. They stumbled along the way, facing tough losses to FBS Appalachian State and fellow playoff team Austin Peay. However, as conference play unfolded, Gardner-Webb turned the tide, finishing strong with a 5-1 record and clinching the conference championship for the second consecutive year.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the North Carolina Central University Eagles soared into the playoffs on the wings of an impressive season. Fresh off winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the HBCU national championship, the Eagles showcased their strength in a schedule that included marquee matchups against UCLA and a trip to the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis. Victories against South Carolina State and Norfolk State highlighted their success, while a challenging loss to Howard kept them out of the Celebration Bowl for a second year in a row but opened the door to the FCS playoffs.

As the bracket unfolded, fans marveled at the matchups that would define the road to the national championship in Frisco, Texas. Gardner-Webb was slated to face Mercer in the first round, a game that promised intensity and excitement. Meanwhile, NC Central prepared for a showdown with Richmond, setting the stage for a clash between two formidable opponents. Coach Tre Lamb's Gardner-Webb offensive machinery churned out an impressive 448 total yards, with a remarkable 308 yards coming from their potent rushing attack. The Runnin' Bulldogs contained the Charleston Southern offense, holding them to 248 total yards, with only 92 yards on the ground.

The scoring summary tells a tale of a Gardner-Webb squad overcoming a slow start and exploding on the gridiron in the second half. The first quarter saw Jay Billingsley's precision, nailing field goals from 48 and 22 yards out, setting the tone for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Brendan Jackson's one-yard touchdown run further solidified Gardner-Webb's early lead. Despite a responsive eight-yard touchdown run by Charleston Southern's TJ Ruff in the second quarter, the Runnin' Bulldogs held their ground. The third and fourth quarters featured standout plays, including Jackson's second touchdown run and a spectacular 43-yard pass from Jaylen King to AJ Johnson, sealing Gardner-Webb's dominance and capping a convincing victory.

Ty French's stellar performance set a new program record for career sacks at 30.5, surpassing Gabe Wilkins' previous record of 29.0 from 1990-93. The Gardner-Webb defense's formidable display limited Charleston Southern to a mere 81 yards in the second half and held opponents to less than 100 rushing yards for the third consecutive game.

BOILING SPRINGS – In a heart-pounding showdown on Saturday, October 21, Gardner-Webb’s Runnin’ Bulldogs managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as they clawed their way back from behind, defeating the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, 35-32. It was a game filled with dramatic twists and incredible plays and went down to the wire.

From the opening kickoff, it was evident that both teams came to play, and Eastern Kentucky wasted no time in making their presence known. In just the second play of the game, Braedon Sloan sprinted 61 yards down the field, putting the Colonels ahead 7-0 in the blink of an eye. Gardner-Webb, however, answered with a relentless drive of their own, only to be thwarted on fourth down by Mike Smith, Jr., granting Eastern Kentucky another opportunity. But it was Gardner-Webb’s defense that soon stole the show. Ja’Kai Young intercepted a pass at the 40-yard line, racing into the endzone and tying the game 7-7 with 10:51 remaining in the first quarter.

Eastern Kentucky retaliated with an impressive 11-play, 75-yard drive, capped off by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Parker McKinney to Jalen Burbage, giving the Colonels a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter. Gardner-Webb’s subsequent possession was marked by a crucial sack from Cam Junior, causing a fumble recovered by Ryan Jackson of Eastern Kentucky. Despite the opportunity, the Colonels failed to capitalize as Raequan Ousley broke up a pass on fourth down.

The back-and-forth continued when Gardner-Webb’s Jordon Thomas stripped the ball from Ephraim Floyd’s grasp, handing Eastern Kentucky possession once more. This time, the Colonels made no mistake, as Josh Carter ran into the endzone from 22 yards out, extending Eastern Kentucky’s lead to 21-7 with 11:47 remaining in the first half.

The Elon Phoenix and the Campbell Fighting Camels are set to face off in an exciting CAA matchup today at Barker-Lane Stadium in Buies Creek. This match-up promises to be a thrilling encounter as both teams have shown great potential in their previous games and are looking to move up the CAA standings. Elon has had a mixed start to their season, falling in close matchups to FBS Wake Forest and a strong NC FCS Gardner-Webb squad before winning their CAA opener against North Carolina A&T last Saturday. Defensively, the Phoenix are coming off of a strong effort where they held the Aggies to an impressive 140 yards of total offense. The Phoenix defense, led by defensive back, and former Grimsley High standout, Caleb Curtain along with Asheville’s Marvin Pearson is going to need another strong effort to take down a Campbell team that is averaging over forty points a game.

Campbell’s Hajj-Malik Williams is averaging over 250 yards passing per game over the first three weeks of the season and has thrown for five touchdowns without any interceptions. The senior signal-caller has also rushed for three touchdowns as part of a three-headed running game alongside running backs NaQuari Rogers and former Charlotte Catholic star Lamagea McDowell who have each also rushed for three touchdowns.

This game is crucial for both teams. For the Phoenix, a win could help turn their season around and boost their morale as they head into a stretch of games against ranked FCS teams. For the Camels, another win would solidify their strong start to the season and keep their momentum going in their first season in the CAA.

Mars Hill Hosts Barton in Battle of Unbeatens

Barton travels to take on Mars Hill in a South Atlantic battle of unbeatens with important divisional implications this early in the season. Kickoff is set for 1 pm and will be broadcast on FloSports. Former Eastern Randolph star Jordan Terrell, who was named the national offensive player of the week and leads all rushers in the country with 194 yards per game, leads a Barton offense that has averaged over thirty points a game and knocked off Division 1 Davidson two weeks ago. Mars Hill is coming off a resounding 35-20 victory over Catawba, powered by standout performances from North Carolina products Jon Gullette (Reagan) and Simeon Thompson (Erwin).

ECU Looks For First Win of Season Against Gardner-Webb

Gardner-Webb travels to Greenville to take on their second FBS foe in a month in an East Carolina squad looking to avoid an 0-4 start to the season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs lost a close two-point matchup on the road at Tennessee State last week after knocking off in-state FCS rival Elon the previous week. The Pirates had a lead on the road at Appalachian State last week before faltering in the second half. Both teams are featuring strong running games with Narii Gaither leading a ground-focused Gardner-Webb offense and Rahjai Harris pacing a balanced Pirates offense. Kickoff is set for 6 pm and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
