Lightning Can Only Delay NC State in 73-0 Rout of Richmond

12:01 PM

RALEIGH – For nearly 90 minutes Friday night, lightning managed to do something Richmond could not: stop NC State.

Even that proved temporary.

The Wolfpack overwhelmed the Spiders from the opening minutes at Carter-Finley Stadium, weathered a lengthy lightning delay during the second quarter and returned to finish a dominant 73-0 victory Friday night.

NC State amassed 734 yards of total offense while limiting Richmond to just 110, turning a game interrupted by Mother Nature into a showcase for virtually every corner of the Wolfpack roster. NC State rushed for 428 yards, averaged 10.6 yards per offensive play and finished with 31 first downs compared with Richmond's six.

The rout began quickly.

Davion Gause put the Wolfpack ahead with a 19-yard touchdown run less than four minutes into the game. Just 37 seconds of game time later, Jayden “Duke” Scott broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown, giving NC State a 14-0 advantage.

Scott struck again late in the opening quarter, scoring from seven yards out to make it 21-0.

The Wolfpack needed little time to extend that advantage in the second. Quarterback CJ Bailey capped a five-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, pushing NC State's lead to 28-0 with 11:33 remaining.

Then the game stopped.

Lightning in the area forced the teams off the field and sent the game into a delay that stretched for nearly an hour and a half. A night that had begun with NC State scoring four touchdowns in barely more than a quarter suddenly became a waiting game.

When the teams finally returned, however, the interruption had done little to change the direction of the contest.

NC State scored three more touchdowns before the second quarter ended.

Freshman quarterback Will Wilson scored on a 1-yard run with 8:30 remaining. Bailey then connected with Preston Douglas for a 15-yard touchdown with 6:23 to play, and Wilson added another 1-yard scoring run with just 24 seconds remaining.

By the time the second quarter finally ended, the Wolfpack led 49-0.

After already spending nearly 90 minutes off the field because of the weather, the teams did not head back to the locker rooms for a conventional halftime. Instead, they took only a three-minute break before beginning the third quarter.

The unusual schedule did nothing to slow NC State.

Wilson added his third rushing touchdown of the night early in the third quarter, scoring from five yards out to make it 56-0. He later threw his first touchdown pass, finding Hunter Provience for a 3-yard score with 4:12 remaining in the period.

NC State carried a 63-0 lead into the fourth quarter.

Kanoah Vinesett added a 45-yard field goal with 6:31 remaining before Dylan McCoy provided the final points with a 51-yard touchdown run with 1:49 to play. The score completed a night in which NC State produced eight rushing touchdowns and two through the air.

Scott led the Wolfpack rushing attack with 128 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries, averaging 14.2 yards per attempt. McCoy added 73 yards on four carries, while Wilson rushed for 62 yards and three scores.

Bailey did most of his damage through the air, completing 13 of 17 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown. Keenan Jackson was his leading target, catching four passes for 123 yards, including a 54-yard reception.

The Wolfpack defense was every bit as dominant.

Richmond managed only 34 rushing yards and 76 passing yards, averaged 2.2 yards per play and converted just two of 13 third-down opportunities. The Spiders never reached the red zone and punted nine times. NC State, meanwhile, scored on all eight of its trips inside the Richmond 20.

Richmond running back Warrick Stephenson accounted for 58 of the Spiders' 34 net rushing yards, while quarterbacks Jack Callaghan and Ashten Snelsire combined to complete eight of 27 passes for 76 yards and an interception.

The game began at 7:03 p.m. and did not end until 11:51, stretching to an elapsed time of four hours and 47 minutes. An announced crowd of 56,919 watched a contest that included a weather delay, an almost nonexistent halftime and one of the most lopsided performances possible on a football field.

Lightning may have interrupted NC State's momentum Friday night.

It never took it away.

Tarboro and Corvian Set for Showdown in 1A State Championship

12:00 PM

The stage is set for an electrifying battle as the Tarboro Vikings (13-1) and the Corvian Jaguars (15-0) meet in the 2024 NCHSAA 1A Football State Championship on Saturday, December 21, at 3:00 PM at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. With both teams dominating their competition en route to this title game, fans can expect an unforgettable clash between two contrasting yet equally successful programs.

Contrasting Paths to Raleigh

The Tarboro Vikings, led by veteran head coach Jeff Craddock, have been a juggernaut all season. After suffering their only loss to 3A powerhouse Havelock early in the year, Tarboro responded by steamrolling opponents with a relentless ground game. The Vikings have outscored opponents 51.6 to 9.7 points per game this season, amassing over 4,200 rushing yards behind their signature “Tarboro T” offense.

On the other side, the Corvian Jaguars have taken a meteoric rise in just their second year of playoff football. The Queen City program enters the championship with a perfect 15-0 record, earning respect statewide by defeating three Charlotte-area 4A schools to start the season. The Jaguars’ playoff run was capped by victories over Mount Airy—snapping the state’s longest active winning streak—and perennial contender Mountain Heritage.

Tarboro’s Relentless Ground Game

At the heart of Tarboro’s success is their punishing ground attack. Quarterback Tyler Powell has expertly orchestrated the Vikings' “Tarboro T,” distributing the ball efficiently to a loaded backfield. Senior running back Kamerin McDowell-Moore leads the charge, averaging 99.6 rushing yards per game. He is complemented by Mason Satterfield and Caiden Everette, who together add over 150 rushing yards per game.

While Tarboro leans heavily on the run, Powell has delivered when needed through the air, throwing for 700 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. With such a dominant ground game and a quarterback capable of keeping defenses honest, the Vikings’ offense is built to control the clock and wear down opponents.

Corvian’s Balanced Offensive Attack

The Jaguars’ offense presents a more balanced approach, led by dynamic senior quarterback AJ Jackson Jr. Jackson has accounted for 17 touchdowns through the air and 12 more on the ground, showcasing his versatility as a dual-threat playmaker. He’ll look to connect early and often with star running back Cam Johnson, who has been the centerpiece of the Jaguars’ offense with 24 total touchdowns and nearly 100 rushing yards per game.

Corvian has averaged 41.4 points per game this season while allowing just 8.5 points per contest, proving they can win shootouts and defensive battles alike. Jackson’s ability to stretch the field and Johnson’s consistency on the ground will be key in keeping Tarboro’s defense off balance.

Defensive Battle

Both teams feature physical, hard-hitting defenses that have stifled opponents all season.

For Tarboro, linebacker Cole Craddock leads the team with 132 total tackles and 11 tackles for loss, while Keivious Bridgers (112 tackles) and Tyler Powell (21 tackles for loss) add to an imposing defensive front. Powell has also tallied 21 sacks, making him one of the most disruptive defenders in the state. Add in contributors like Kamerin McDowell-Moore and Gabe Kassnove, who have combined for 140 tackles, and Tarboro’s defense is as formidable as their offense.

The Jaguars’ defense is equally impressive. Junior linebacker Jayden Summers anchors the unit with 117 tackles, while defensive end Adrian Scott has wreaked havoc in opposing backfields with 28 tackles for loss and 14 sacks. On the back end, playmakers like Cam Johnson and AJ Jackson Jr. continue to make their mark. Johnson has contributed over 100 tackles as a defensive back, while Jackson leads the team with six interceptions, showcasing his ability to flip momentum.

Championship Narrative

For Tarboro, this championship represents an opportunity to add another title to their storied history. Their dominant playoff run has included a 71-0 rout of Warren County and a 59-6 win over Wilson Prep in the regional final, underscoring their reputation as one of the state’s premier programs.

For Corvian, the Jaguars are chasing history. In just their second playoff season, they’ve already proven they belong among the state’s elite. Their 21-14 win over Mount Airy and 28-21 victory against Mountain Heritage solidified their place as a team that thrives in big moments.

This matchup pits tradition against rising talent. Tarboro’s bruising ground game and championship pedigree will test Corvian’s balance and resilience. For the Jaguars, the challenge is clear: stop the Vikings’ running attack and seize their moment in Raleigh.

Final Thoughts

With two elite programs colliding for the 1A state title, fans can expect a hard-fought, physical contest. Will Tarboro’s ground-and-pound attack secure another championship for the Vikings, or will Corvian complete their perfect season and claim their first-ever state title?

Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM on Saturday, December 21, at Carter-Finley Stadium. This championship clash is one fans won’t want to miss.

Salisbury Tops St. Pauls for 2AA Title

10:40 PM

RALEIGH – Salisbury won the school’s fourth football State Championship by rushing past St. Pauls 42-14. Hornets QB Vance Honeycutt collected the game’s MVP honors scoring four touchdowns on the ground and throwing for another in the game.

The Hornets started fast, with Honeycutt cashing in on their first possession on a four-yard touchdown run after a nine-play, 70-yard drive. The next Salisbury possession found paydirt as well when Honeycutt capped off a five-play, 55-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown dash to go up 14-0.

St. Pauls battled back in the latter stages of the first quarter as the Bulldogs got on the board when Waltay Jackson hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Mikail Breeden with 3:05 to go in the first quarter. After recovering a Hornet fumble, St. Pauls marched six plays and 28 yards to tie the game at 14 when Daekwon Payne recovered a loose ball in the endzone after a two-yard run by Demonta Williams.

Salisbury got a pair of touchdowns in the closing minutes of the second quarter, one on a 17 yard run from JyMikaah Wells and a ten-yard scoring sprint by Honeycutt to take a 28-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Honeycutt played a hand in both second-half touchdowns for the Hornets, ripping off a six-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter and throwing for another finding Jalon Walker from 25 yards out through the air for another. Honeycutt wrapped up the night with 105 yards through the air and 110 yards on the ground.

JyMikaah Wells was the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the game for Salisbury, winning the award with 144 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown. Nicholas Hall was the Most Outstanding Defensive Player for the Hornets, racking up 10 tackles including 1.5 tackles for a loss from his defensive line spot.

The Bulldogs’ Waltay Jackson was the team’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player award winner. Jackson caught 10 passes for 72 yards and a score. Elston Powell was the Most Outstanding Defensive Player for the game, making eight tackles in the game.

Salisbury wrapped up the season 8-2-0. The Hornets were 4-2 in Central Carolina 2A play. The Hornets secured the program’s second straight Regional Title, appearing in the State Championship game for the fifth time in school history.

St. Pauls finished the season 8-1. The Bulldogs were 5-0 in Three Rivers 1A/2A play, winning the conference championship. They were Regional Champions for the first time in program history after earning a berth in the regional finals for the fourth time. Vance Honeycutt

RB Elliott and Hillside Secures Thrilling Thursday Night Win

10:51 PM
RB Elliott and Hillside Secures Thrilling Thursday Night Win
It was a chilly night in Raleigh and with the rain coming, teams geared up for Thursday night football.  One game in the Raleigh area lived up to the hype, as Hillside traveled to Cardinals Gibbons with both teams undefeated in conference play and Gibbons coming in with a 6-0 record, while Hillside was 5-1.

In the start of the game, it was the Hillside defense that was winning the battle, pushing Gibbons back on drives.  Several times Gibbons found themselves in second or third and long, playing into the hands of Hillside.

Hillside went up early with quarterback Randy Trice finding Caleb Harrington for a 28 yard touchdown, while running back Jamal Elliott scored a few plays later as well to put the Hornets up 14-0 in the second quarter.

Cardinals Gibbons fought back and got on the board with a 25 yard field goal late in the second quarter and eventually scored a few plays later on a muffed punt by Hillside, cutting the lead to 14-10 at halftime.

Elliott found the end zone again to start the third quarter.  But with both offenses somewhat struggling at times in the first half, that would change in the second half.

Cardinal Gibbons would find the end zone two more times after, taking their first lead after quarterback Stoneking found Biestek on a 17 yard pass.

Hillside would answer back with Elliott's third touchdown, while adding another one in the fourth quarter, pushing the lead to 34-22.

Gibbons wouldn't give up though, as the Hornets tried to use clock in the fourth quarter, but the Crusaders offense started clicking again.  Gibbons eventually scored with 1:23 to go in the game, cutting the Hornets lead to 34-29 and looking for the onside kick.

The Crusaders recovered and drove down the field, scoring one yard out and taking the 35-34 lead with 14.5 second left to go.  The momentum was there and Cardinal Gibbons was just seconds away from going to 7-0 on the season.

That is when running back Elliott showed up one last time, scoring his fourth and the go-ahead touchdown, returning the kickoff 99 yards to give Hillside the 41-35 victory Thursday night in Raleigh.

Lake Norman Charter, Swansboro, Cardinal Gibbons, and Green Hope Take Soccer Titles

9:10 PM

Lake Norman Charter Outlasts Raleigh Charter in Overtime in NCHSAA State 1-A Women's Soccer Final

RALEIGH – Lake Norman Charter outlasted Raleigh Charter 6-3 in overtime in a wild back-and-forth North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A women's soccer championship game at Dail Soccer Field at North Carolina State University.

There were four goals in the regulation 80 minutes and then six goals in overtime, including three in the space of five minutes in the first extra stanza.

Both teams scored within about 30 seconds of the first overtime, with sophomore forward Erin Iknayan, who was named the championship match Most Valuable Player, getting her second goal of the game to put Lake Norman Charter up 3-2. But moments later Rachel Hammond of Raleigh Charter knocked home a penalty kick to tie it again.

Madeline Iknayan scored in the 85th minute to put Lake Norman Charter back in front 4-3, and six minutes later a long shot by Rachel Quest of the Knights made it 5-3. Then Riley Kane scored her 21st goal of the season with less than two minutes to go in the second OT for the final tally.
Both teams had a couple of scoring opportunities in the first 40 minutes, but failed to capitalize as the first half was scoreless.

Then Lake Norman Charter broke the ice in the 47th minute when Kane tallied with a great individual effort, as the junior forward’s left-footed shot found the back of the net.
But seconds later, after the ensuing kickoff, junior midfield Alexa Dreyer of Raleigh Charter lofted a shot high over the keeper to even the score at 1-1.

The Phoenix then took a 2-1 advantage in the 59th minute as Dreyer delivered a beautiful cross to senior forward Ilana Green, who slammed it home to put Raleigh Charter ahead.

But Lake Norman Charter responded to deadlock the game at 2-2, which is the way the regulation 80 minutes ended. Erin Iknayan knocked in the equalizer in the 73rd minute.

Raleigh Charter was in the finals for the third time, winning the title in 2007 and making its first visit to the finals since 2009, while Lake Norman Charter played for the title for the first time. Lake Norman Charter wound up 19-3-3 overall while Raleigh Charter went 20-2.

Swansboro Blanks South Iredell 3-0 in NCHSAA State 2-A Women's Soccer Final

RALEIGH – Swansboro’s Tylor Ring scored two goals and assisted on a third to lead the Pirates to a 3-0 triumph over South Iredell on Saturday afternoon in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A women's soccer championship game at Dail Soccer Field.

Ring, a freshman forward who opened the scoring in the 14th minute and then scored the final goal of the match, was selected as the championship match Most Valuable Player.

Swansboro led 1-0 at intermission after Ring’s first goal, with Brenna Kate Grass assisting, and then in the 56th minute sophomore Kimberly Moore scored her 40th goal of the season off an assist from Ring for a 2-0 advantage.

In the final minutes, with South Iredell pushing forward, Ring got a breakaway, took the ball down deep into the box and scored in the 71st minute to salt away the victory.

The victorious Pirates outshot South Iredell 11-6 and had three corner kicks to one for the Vikings.
Swansboro finished the season with a 23-5-1 record and won its final 10 matches, including outscoring its foes 30-0 in six state playoff matches. The Pirates should also be good in years to come with only two seniors in the starting lineup.

South Iredell suffered its third loss in 25 outings.

Swansboro was in the finals for the third time in the last five years and sixth overall, with the Pirates winning state crowns in 2006, ’09 and ’10. South Iredell made its first appearance in the championships after knocking off previously unbeaten East Bend Forbush 1-0 in the regional round.

Cardinal Gibbons Rolls Past St. Stephens in NCHSAA State 3-A Women's Soccer Championship

RALEIGH – Christina Gibbons scored a pair of goals to lead Cardinal Gibbons to a 3-0 victory over Hickory St. Stephens on Saturday afternoon for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women's soccer championship at Dail Soccer Field at N.C. State University.

Gibbons, a Duke signee who scored five goals in a playoff game against Burlington Williams earlier in the playoffs, was named Most Valuable Player of the championship match.

The Crusaders exerted heavy pressure in the first 20 minutes and tallied just 2:08 into the contest when all-American Morgan Reid found the back of the net. Then Cardinal Gibbons made it 2-0 in the 11th minute with a two on one that resulted in a goal by Gibbons.

In the 60th minute, Gibbons dribbled down the right side and then tucked it into the left corner of the net for the final 3-0 advantage.

The Crusader defense, with senior Kristen Twomey in goal, recorded its 18th shutout in 25 games. Twomey had five saves as Gibbons outshot St. Stephens 20-9.

Cardinal Gibbons finished the season 22-2-1 and played for the NCHSAA women’s soccer championship for the fourth time, winning its second state crown. The Crusaders won the 2-A title in 2007 and now have an amazing 38-6 record in state playoff competition in the last eight seasons. St. Stephens made its first appearance in the championship and the Indians ended the campaign 21-4-2.

Green Hope Blanks Cornelius Hough 2-0 to Earn NCHSAA State 4-A Women's Soccer Championship

RALEIGH – Cary Green Hope capped a perfect season and blanked Cornelius W.A. Hough 2-0 on Saturday afternoon to win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s soccer championship before a large crowd at Dail Soccer Field at North Carolina State University.

Green Hope avenged a loss in last year’s final, as it was a rematch of last year’s state 4-A title match in which Sarah Moon scored two goals in the final 11 minutes to lift Hough to a 2-1 victory over Green Hope.

Senior forward Alexis Shaffer, who scored the initial goal of the game and had an excellent all-around performance, was named the championship Most Valuable Player.

Green Hope took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when Shaffer took the ball down the right side, wheeled back to the left and fired a left-footed shot into the back of the net for her 39th goal of the season. The Falcons had the better of play for most of the first half.

In the second half, as Hough pressed forward in the final minutes, Green Hope junior midfielder Kenley Sigmon found the ball in space, dribbled through a couple of defenders and then buried a shot for the 2-0 margin with 6:34 remaining.

Senior keeper Lisa Armstrong recorded the shutout in goal, with seven saves.

Green Hope completed a perfect 28-0 season and has not lost since its defeat in last year’s state championship game. Hough finished the year 21-3 overall and had a seven-match win streak snapped.

Hough was in the finals for the second straight year in just the third year of the school’s existence.

The Raleigh Sports Consortium serves as the primary host city partner for the women's soccer championship, along with the Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Pairings Set For NCHSAA State Women's Soccer Championships at Dail Soccer Field at NCSU

5:02 PM

RALEIGH – Four North Carolina High School Athletic Association women's state soccer championships will be decided Saturday in the 28th annual NCHSAA finals set for Dail Soccer Field at North Carolina State University.

All four finals will be played on Saturday, with game times 11 am, 2 pm, 5 pm and 8 pm. This will be the seventh year for a separate 1-A championship since the number of schools playing the sport increased to the threshold for having a separate championship.

All four of the games will be televised by Time Warner Cable on TWC special events channel 520 and the stream is available on line at www.news14.com. Then they will be available on Carolina on Demand, digital channel 199 or 1047 on Time Warner systems across the state, within a couple of days after the championships.

The first game Saturday is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start for the 3-A championship, sending a perennial power, Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons (21-2-1) against a newcomer to the state finals, Hickory St. Stephens (21-3-2). St. Stephens knocked off Charlotte Catholic 1-0 in the regional finals on Tuesday night.

Gibbons, in the finals for the fourth time, is led by Duke signee Christina Gibbons and junior all-American Morgan Reid, who has verbally committed to Duke and competed for the U.S. under-17 team in the 2012 FIFA World Cup. Macy Frankliln, the Northwestern Conference Player of the Year, paces St. Stephens and has scored 47 goals this season, including 12 in the playoffs.

The Saturday 2 p.m. game is for the 2-A title, with Swansboro (22-5-1) taking on South Iredell (22-2).

Swansboro is in the finals for the third time in the last five years and sixth overall, and won state crowns in 2006, ’09 and ’10.  South Iredell makes its first appearance in the championships after knocking off previously unbeaten East Bend Forbush 1-0 on Tuesday night in a regional final.

Swansboro has outscored its opposition 115-21 this year and has recorded 17 shutouts, including an amazing 27-0 edge in the playoffs.   South Iredell, though, hasn’t allowed a goal in the postseason either and the Vikings are led by Catawba Valley Athletic Conference Player of the Year Miracle Campbell, with 27 goals this season.

The 4-A game will kick off at 5 pm and will pit two outstanding teams against one another in a rematch of last year’s 4-A final.  Unbeaten Cary Green Hope (27-0), ranked number one in the nation according to one service, will face Cornelius W.A. Hough (21-2).

Last year Hough rallied in the final minutes to nip Green Hope 2-1 and went on to record 32 consecutive victories, an NCHSAA record, before the streak was ended in late March. Green Hope has not lost since last year’s state final.

The unbeaten Falcons have a potent offense to go with a stingy defense, with 147 goals scored this season against just 15 allowed.  Alexis Degler and Alexis Shaffer each have 38 goals on the season. Hough’s scoring is topped by Brandi Arey (20 goals) and Courtney Carroll (19), while Marnie Merritt has 18 shutouts in goal.

The final game at 8 p.m. will be for the 1-A title, with Raleigh Charter (20-1) taking on Lake Norman Charter (18-3-3). Raleigh Charter is in the finals for the third time, winning the title in 2007 and making its first visit to the finals since 2009, while Lake Norman Charter is the championship for the first time.
Senior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy of Lake Norman Charter was the Southern Piedmont Conference Player of the Year and will play at UNC-Wilmington next year.  Raleigh Charter is led by senior captains Rachel Hammond and Ilana Green, with Green committed to play at The Citadel next fall.
The Raleigh Sports Consortium serves as the primary host city partner for the women's soccer championship, along with the Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau.

NCHSAA 2A Championship Postgame Wrap-up

7:49 PM
NCHSAA 2A Championship Postgame Wrap-up
It was the matchup that everyone wanted to see last year, but an upset in the regionals kept it from happening. This year, though, nothing was going to stop the matchup between the Lincolnton Wolves and the Tarboro Vikings in the 2A state championship game. Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh was rocking as the two titans met to decide who was the best 2A team in North Carolina. Lincolnton, winners in was the number seed in the West while Tarboro was the two-time defending champions.

Lincolnton won the opening toss and chose to receive. Tarboro kicked out of bounds so the Wolves began their drive at their own 35. And what a drive it was. Using a steady mix of inside Dee Littlejohn runs and Patrick Rendleman passes, the Wolves drove down the field in methodical fashion. When it looked like Tarboro had forced the Wolves to punt, a fake to Dee Littlejohn kept the chains moving and the clock running. A 3 yard score by Michael Cunningham gave the Wolves a 6-0 lead. While Lincolnton only drove 65 yards, they took 9 minutes off of the clock to do so.

Tarboro finally got the ball with a little over 2 minutes remaining in the first quarter and went straight to their running heavy “Tarboro-T” offense. A few short runs inside and long runs outside had the Vikings pounding on the door as the first quarter ended. Todd Gurley scored on the first play of the second quarter and the game was tied at 7.

A fumble by Lincolnton on the first play of their next drive gave the Vikings great field position at the 22 yard line of the Wolves. Larry Jones made Lincolnton pay going in for a score from the 9 yard line. The resulting PAT made it a 7 point lead for Tarboro, 14-7.

When it looked like Tarboro had really turned the momentum on Lincolnton, intercepting a pass and moving downfield for a score, a fumble gave the ball back to the Wolves. When the Wolves were forced to punt, a muff by the Tarboro returner gave the ball right back to Lincolnton. The Wolves tied it up with a Dee Littlejohn 7 yard run and the score at the half was 14 all.

Tarboro came out in the second half determined to put some more points on the board and apply the pressure to a Lincolnton offense that now found some momentum. And the Vikings were successful with a 5 yard touchdown pass, their only pass so far, from Aaron Moore to Tyquan Lewis. The PAT missed, though, and Tarboro led by 6.

Lincolnton immediately answered with a long 88 yard kickoff return for touchdown by Michael Cunningham to give the Wolves a 21-20 lead. Not wanting to be outdone, Todd Gurley answered right back with a long 58 yard touchdown run to make the score 27-21 in favor of the defending champions.

The fourth quarter was a scoring frenzy that began with a Patrick Rendleman score on a 15 yard quarterback option keeper. The kickoff was returned by Tarboro the Lincolnton 31 and Todd Gurley ran it in from there on the next play to make the score 33-28 in favor of Tarboro after another failed PAT.

Lincolnton moved the ball back down the field on their next drive giving the Tarboro defense all they wanted of Dee Littlejohn. As Lincolnton faced a 3rd and 2 from the Tarboro 28, Scott Cloninger again called on Littlejohn to carry the mail and the senior responded with a touchdown run, knocking over two Tarboro defenders on the way. The 2 point conversion was good and the Wolves led 36-33 in the final quarter.

Tarboro went right back on offense and drove down the field. When faced with a 4th down, Tarboro attempted their second pass and the game and converted. Todd Gurley added his fourth touchdown of the game to make the game 39-36. The PAT was no good and the Vikings went to their defense to hold a 3 point lead with less than four minutes left in the game.

The kickoff went into the end zone for a touchback and the Wolves were faced with the task of going 80 yards to win a state championship. On 4th and 6 from the Tarboro 43, the Wolves were unable to convert, giving the ball back to Tarboro. Tarboro star Todd Gurley ran deep into Lincolnton territory seal the deal as the Tarboro faithful celebrated their third straight championship.
