NC State Defense Shines in 20-6 Win Over Miami

12:00 AM

RALEIGH – In an intense college football matchup, the North Carolina State Wolfpack claimed a hard-earned victory against the Miami Hurricanes in front of a raucous crowd at Carter-Finley Stadium. In a game that showcased impressive defensive performances from both sides, NC State ultimately emerged as the victors with a final score of 20-6.

First Quarter: A Kicking Start

The game kicked off with both teams demonstrating their defensive prowess. Miami started with a promising 12-play drive but was only able to secure a field goal, courtesy of a 48-yard kick by Andres Borregales. However, NC State quickly responded with a touchdown as Jordan Poole caught a 12-yard pass from MJ Morris, followed by Brayden Narveson's successful extra point. The first quarter ended with NC State leading 7-3.

Second Quarter: Field Goals and Defensive Duels

In the second quarter, both teams relied on their kickers to add points to the scoreboard. Borregales, Miami's kicker, added another 27-yard field goal. On the other side, Brayden Narveson of NC State nailed a 39-yard field goal, bringing the score to 10-6 in favor of the Wolfpack.

NC State's Dominant Defense

The second half of the game saw NC State's defense take control. Kendrick Raphael's 31-yard run for a touchdown in the fourth quarter extended the lead to 17-6. With Miami unable to mount a successful comeback, Narveson added a 19-yard field goal to secure NC State's victory with a final score of 20-6.

Tar Heels Host Undefeated Miami in Bid to Snap Losing Streak

6:49 PM
North Carolina looks to snap a five-game losing streak when the Tar Heels host No. 8 Miami Saturday at noon at Kenan Stadium. The final ACC home contest of 2017, Saturday also marks Homecoming at UNC. UNC fell to 1-7 on the year with a 59-7 loss at No. 14 Virginia Tech last weekend in Blacksburg. Chazz Surratt hit Anthony Ratliff-Williams for a 43-yard touchdown strike in the fourth quarter for the lone Carolina points on a tough afternoon for the Tar Heels. Miami picked up its sixth straight win to open the season with a 27-19 victory over Syracuse last Saturday in south Florida. Malik Rosier threw for 344 yards and two scores and Travis Homer iced the game late with a 33-yard touchdown run. Miami's 11-game winning streak dating back to last season is the program's longest in 15 years.

Carolina and Miami are meeting for the 21st time overall and the 14th consecutive season. The Tar Heels lead the series, 11-9. Last year in Miami Gardens, Mitch Trubisky threw two touchdown passes and Malik Carney forced a turnover with 1:31 left to seal a 20-13 win over the No. 16 Hurricanes. Ryan Switzer and Austin Proehl had TD grabs and Bug Howard finished with 10 catches for 156 yards for the Tar Heels, who converted 14 of 23 third-down chances on a rainy afternoon. In the last meeting in Chapel Hill, Marquise Williams accounted for four touchdowns and Switzer had a 78-yard punt return for a score, leading No. 17 North Carolina's dominating performance in a 59-21 win over the Hurricanes.

Five of UNC's six most recent wins in the series were decided by 10 points or less - a 33-27 victory in 2007, a 28-24 win in 2008, a 33-24 win in 2009, an 18-14 win in 2012 and last year's 20-13 decision. Carolina's first game against Miami as ACC members came in 2004 and was a memorable win for the Tar Heels. Connor Barth connected on a 42-yard field goal as time expired to beat the fourth-ranked Hurricanes, 31-28. It is still the highest-ranked team Carolina has ever beaten and is the Tar Heels' only win over a team ranked in the Associated Press top five.

The first meeting between the two institutions came in 1946, when Carl Snavely's Tar Heels knocked off Miami, 21-0, in the second game of the year. Carolina would go on to finish 8-2-1 and play Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

What the Coaches are Saying

UNC Coach Larry Fedora
“We’re looking forward to this week. We’ve got an undefeated Miami team that’s rolling in here playing with a lot of confidence. Mark [Richt] has done a great job getting this team prepared week in and week out. I think they’re one of the top teams in the country in turnover margin. So, they’re taking care of the football, and they’re creating takeaways on defense, and so we’ve got to do a great job of taking care of the football ourselves”

Miami Coach Mark Richt
"There’s no doubt we can get better. I can only hope we keep getting better. I don't know what the right time is to peak, but if we can keep getting better, that would be really good for us. And we all know we can get better.”

Five ACC Football Teams Ranked in Preseason Associated Press Top 25 Poll

8:46 PM

ACC places two in the top five for second consecutive season

Greensboro, N.C. (theACC.com) – Greensboro, N.C. (theACC.com) – Five Atlantic Coast Conference teams, including No. 3 Florida State and No. 5 Clemson, are ranked in the preseason college football Top 25 poll released Monday by the Associated Press. FSU received four first place votes.

Also included in the poll are No. 16 Louisville, No. 18 Miami and No. 21 Virginia Tech. NC State and Pitt received votes outside the Top 25.

The ACC is the only conference with two top five selections and is tied for second with five teams in the poll. This marks the second consecutive season (and second time overall) two ACC teams have been included in the top five. Last year, Clemson and Florida State also were ranked in the top five.

The league has now had a pair of top 10 teams in the AP preseason poll on seven occasions, beginning with its first year of existence in 1953 when Maryland was ranked ninth and Duke 10th. The ACC also had two top 10 teams in 1991 (No. 8 Georgia Tech, No. 9 Clemson), 1997 (No. 3 Florida State, No. 7 North Carolina), 2001 (No. 6 Florida State, No. 10 Georgia Tech), 2004 (No. 8 Virginia Tech, No. 9 Miami), 2005 (No. 8 Virginia Tech, No. 9 Miami) and 2016 (No. 2 Clemson, No. 4 Florida State).

Alabama was picked No. 1 in the AP poll and will face the third-ranked Seminoles on Saturday, Sept. 2, in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta. Those are the highest-ranked teams in a season opener since the AP started a preseason poll in 1950. It is the fourth season-opening matchup between two top five opponents. The others were No. 1 Pitt against No. 5 North Carolina in 1982, No. 1 Nebraska against No. 4 Penn State in 1983 and No. 1 Oklahoma against No. 4 UCLA in 1986.
