NC State Cruises to 34-6 Win Over ECU in Season Opener

3:21 PM
RALEIGH – Coming into Saturday afternoon’s game against East Carolina, NC State had significant question marks on offense after losing their top playmakers to graduation. Half of the career starts for the entire Wolfpack offense coming into the game were by two members of their offensive line. No returning players had ever made a start at quarterback, running back, center, or left tackle. The inexperience didn’t phase the Wolfpack, though, as redshirt sophomore quarterback Matthew McKay (making his first career start) eclipsed the 300-yard mark in a 34-6 win over East Carolina.

East Carolina started the game on fire behind the arm and legs of sophomore Holton Ahlers. The Greenville native started the game 6-6 on the first drive and moved the Pirates inside the Wolfpack 10-yard line, but a big hit by State’s Tanner Ingle loosened the ball from Ahlers’s grip at the goal line and it was recovered by Jarius Morehead for the touchback.

NC State wasted no time seizing the opportunity to get their new offense out on the field. Two runs by Ricky Person and catches by Thayer Thomas put the Wolfpack into scoring position in a hurry and freshman Zonovan Knight punched it in from nine yards out to give the home team an early 7-0 lead.

The Pirates got on the scoreboard on the next drive with a 47-yard Jake Verity field goal to bring the Pirates within four points, a margin that would carry into the second quarter. ECU tried to make it a one-point game early in the second quarter, but a 52-yard field goal attempt went wide. NC State drove down to the ECU 9-yard line but was forced to settle for a 27-yard Christopher Dunn Field goal. When a busted play resulted in another NC State touchdown late in the half, it was clear that fate was on the side of the Wolfpack on this afternoon.

NC State made it a three-score game in the third quarter when McKay found a streaking Tabari Hines down the right sideline for a 48-yard score for the only points of the third quarter. The fourth quarter went like the rest of the game with the ECU offense unable to get much movement due to a swarming NC State defense and the Wolfpack offense methodically moving down the field. When Matthew McKay went 21 yards on a keeper around the left side and hit the end zone, it was the final exclamation point on the day.

With the victory today, NC State has now won ten straight home openers and all seen under head coach Dave Doeren. Both teams will face in-state FCS opponents next Saturday as NC State (1-0) hosts Western Carolina of the Southern Conference while ECU (1-0) hosts the Big South’s Gardner-Webb.

Notable North Carolinians
Matthew McKay (Wakefield) – The redshirt sophomore went 25 of 37 for 308 yards and a score in his first-ever start at quarterback. He also rushed for two touchdowns on the afternoon.

Chris Ingram (Mooresville) – The junior cornerback picked off one pass and led the team with seven solo tackles

Christopher Dunn (North Davidson) – The sophomore kicker was good from 27 and 34 yards out, 4-4 on PAT attempts, and routinely made the Pirates start deep in their own territory.

Charlotte Tops Gardner-Webb To Open NCCFB Season

10:49 PM

CHARLOTTE – It was the first game of the Will Healy era for Charlotte football. Hosting Gardner-Webb on a Thursday night in front of a sellout crowd of 16,191 fans made for a great atmosphere and the beginning of the North Carolina college football season. After a slow first quarter, Charlotte exploded for twenty-eight points in the second quarter, eventually finishing with a 49-21 win over the visiting Runnin’ Bulldogs.

Coming into the game, Coach Healy was noncommittal on how he would handle his quarterbacks. After the offense didn’t get much movement on the first two drives, Healy inserted last year’s starter, Chris Reynolds. The redshirt sophomore ran for two scores and threw for another.

Devron Harper tried to get the momentum back on the side of Gardner-Webb with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, but Aaron McAllister’s long kickoff return and touchdown catch six plays later ended any chance the Runnin’ Bulldogs had of putting the 49ers on their heels in the first half. Putting the exclamation point on the second quarter was Solomon Rogers’s scoop and score after BJ Turner’s block of a GWU punt.

The two teams traded scores in the third quarter with Gardner-Webb’s Jayln Cagle and Charlotte’s Chris Reynolds each scoring their second touchdown of the night. Both of Cagle’s touchdowns on the night were set up by Devin Mines picking off two tipped Charlotte passes.

With the win, Charlotte is now 6-1 all-time in season openers, including 3-0 when opening at home. Both teams are in action against North Carolina foes next week as Charlotte travels to take on Appalachian State while Gardner-Webb is playing its second FBS team to open the season at East Carolina.

Notable North Carolinians

Chris Reynolds (Davie) – The redshirt sophomore came in on the third series of the game and jumpstarted a moribund 49ers offense. He threw for 136 yards on 14 of 20 passing and ran for 72 more, scoring twice on quarterback keepers

Benny LeMay (Butler) – The senior running back used a 65-yard touchdown run to eclipse the 100-yard game for the eighth time in his career.

Alex Highsmith – The senior defensive end had two sacks which ended promising Gardner-Webb drives.

Jayln Cagle (Brown) – The senior running back’ two touchdown runs were all the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ offense could muster on the evening.

Devin Mines (Mallard Creek) – The senior linebacker picked off two Charlotte passes in the game, leading to fourteen of Gardner-Webb’s 28 points.

Carolina Gridiron Meet the Pickers

11:35 PM

This season, Carolina Gridiron is launching a new media pick ‘em contest featuring some of the state’s top sports media. Each week, we will select a slate of ten games from across the state of North Carolina with a mix of high school and college games being thrown in.

Let’s meet this year’s inaugural pick ‘em All-Star squad.

Jones
Justin Jones is a co-founder and managing editor of Carolina Gridiron. When not covering games on a sideline, he's usually looking for free food somewhere in the press box. For Justin, there's nothing more satisfying than a game on a Friday night when both teams have accurate MaxPreps roster. Other interests include North Carolina barbecue history, random facts that have no purpose, and typing about himself in the third person.

Edwards
Chris Edwards is entering his 12th season calling high school football in North Carolina. Edwards was the voice of high school football on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel for four seasons, including the Thursday Night High School Game of the Week. Currently, you can find Chris every Friday (beginning Sept. 6) in the Triad on My48 for their Game of the Week. In addition to his work calling high school football, Edwards also serves as the radio broadcaster for Duke University Baseball and Women's Basketball.

Spiers
Cory Spiers is a prep sportswriter for the Mitchell News-Journal and considers himself an “average sports guy”. His presence on Twitter proves otherwise as his quick wit and outstanding eye for fallacies in his haters’ arguments have settled many a sports dispute. Cory is an unabashed Carolina Panthers fan and you can follow his blog, Carolina Panthers Musings, throughout the season for insight into how the Cats are making an impression.

Thompson
David Thompson is the Western North Carolina prep sports master. When prep sports fans want info on sports in the mountains, Thompson’s Asheville Citizen-Times and the High School Huddle are where they turn. Thompson won Beat Feature Reporting from the North Carolina Press Association for his 2018 story on an Avery County basketball player playing through the grief of losing her mother.

Shields
Malcolm Shields is the sports editor at The Daily Advance in Elizabeth City. Shields, a native of Florida, has found a home in the northeastern corner of the state and has provided coverage of some of the state’s most outstanding, under-the-radar, players. If you want to know more about #NENCSports, follow Malcolm’s blog at https://nencsports.wordpress.com/.

Fuller
Jackson Fuller has risen like a shooting star from his humble beginnings as a basketball referee at a local Boys and Girls Club. Fuller, a UNCW alum, is a sportswriter for the Wilmington Star-News and covers over twenty schools throughout a multi-county region in southeastern North Carolina. Jackson had a stint in Mount Airy before returning to the Port City to help with the awesome coverage of Star-News Varsity.

Spivey
Jay Spivey is a sports reporter and editor at the Winston-Salem Journal, at least when he’s not hustling baked goods over at Old Salem. Spivey’s reports are one of the reasons why the Triad relies on the Journal and it’s Prep Zone page. Jay’s stories aren’t just limited to high school sports, though, as Bowman Gray Stadium and its short track racing have held Spivey’s eye for a while.

Abraham Lincoln was an American statesman and lawyer who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He is also on the penny which we’ll be flipping for each game as well. Heads favors the away team while tails favors the home team. At a neutral site game, heads favors the team listed first alphabetically.
