Fayetteville State football rallies past Shaw 33-20 in 2026 season opener

FAYETTEVILLE, NC — Fayetteville State spent the opening half chasing Shaw. By the end of the night, the Broncos had turned special teams and defense into the difference in a 33-20 season-opening win Saturday at Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium.

Shaw built a 12-0 lead and appeared to have Fayetteville State on its heels, but the Broncos flipped the game before halftime with two unusual scoring plays. Fayetteville State’s first points came after a blocked extra-point attempt, which Terrell Ford ran back 100 yards for a defensive two-point conversion. Late in the second quarter, the Broncos added another two points when Shaw’s punt attempt went out of the back of the end zone for a safety, cutting the Bears’ lead to 12-11 at the break.

Those plays changed the feel of the opener. Shaw controlled much of the early action, but Fayetteville State stayed within reach without needing its offense to carry the full comeback. Once the Broncos found rhythm after halftime, they scored 16 points in the third quarter and took control.

Shaw struck first when Trey Thorpe scored on a 10-yard run, giving the Bears a 6-0 lead after the missed extra point. The Bears extended the margin in the second quarter on Alexander Marsh’s eight-yard touchdown pass to Keyshaun Powell. But the conversion attempt turned into Fayetteville State’s first momentum swing, with Ford’s return making it 12-2 instead of 13-0.

Fayetteville State’s offense then produced its first touchdown late in the half. Jamir Dismukes led an 11-play, 60-yard drive and finished it with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Parker with one minute left in the second quarter. John Hernandez-Vargas added the extra point, and the Broncos trailed only 12-9.

Shaw’s next possession moved backward, and the Broncos cashed in again without the offense touching the ball. The Bears were backed up near their goal line when the punt attempt resulted in a safety with 25 seconds left, sending Fayetteville State into halftime down by a single point.

Fayetteville State took the lead for good on the opening possession of the third quarter. Braylon Vinson, who led the Broncos with 88 rushing yards on 21 carries, capped an eight-play, 73-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Hernandez-Vargas’ extra point made it 18-12, giving the Broncos their first lead.

The Broncos kept building from there. Dismukes broke loose for a 29-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter, stretching the lead to 24-12. Hernandez-Vargas later added a 34-yard field goal, pushing the margin to 27-12 after Fayetteville State’s third scoring drive of the quarter.

Dismukes finished 14 of 20 for 144 yards and a touchdown without an interception. He also rushed for 56 yards and a score on 10 carries, helping Fayetteville State finish with 292 total yards. Marcus Fleming led the Broncos’ receivers with three catches for 43 yards, while Unique Kelly added four receptions for 41 yards.

Shaw made one last push in the fourth quarter with a long, methodical drive. Landon Melton finished a 19-play, 75-yard march with a three-yard touchdown run, and Marsh completed the two-point try to Antrel Gibson to cut Fayetteville State’s lead to 27-20 with 7:26 remaining.

But Fayetteville State’s defense had the final answer. With Shaw trying to drive late, Zyking Patillo intercepted Marsh and returned it for a touchdown with 1:38 left. Hernandez-Vargas’ extra point attempt was missed, but the defensive score gave the Broncos a 33-20 lead and effectively sealed the opener.

Shaw finished with 216 total yards and was held to 7-of-22 passing. Marsh completed seven of 20 passes for 81 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while Thorpe led the Bears with 53 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Fabian Diggs added 41 yards on eight attempts.

Fayetteville State’s defense repeatedly put Shaw behind schedule, recording seven sacks and holding the Bears to 5 of 16 on third down. Osirus Rhodes and Joseph Woodard each finished with six tackles, while Christopher Gordon had five tackles and one sack.

The Broncos also overcame 13 penalties for 123 yards, relying on special teams, a sharp third quarter and Patillo’s late defensive touchdown to start the season with a CIAA win. For a program picked third in the conference preseason poll, it was not a clean opener, but it was the kind that showed how many ways Fayetteville State can change a game.

FAYETTEVILLE – Fayetteville State closed its regular season with a 31-21 victory over Winston-Salem State on Saturday at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium, honoring 16 seniors on their final home game. The Broncos improved to 6-4 overall and 6-1 in CIAA play, while the Rams finished 4-6 and 3-5 in conference action.

The Broncos defense set the tone immediately when Terrell Ford intercepted Daylin Lee's pass on Winston-Salem State's first play from scrimmage, returning it to midfield. Though Fayetteville State couldn't capitalize on that opening turnover, the defensive intensity established early would pay dividends throughout the afternoon.

Winston-Salem State struck first midway through the opening quarter when Lee connected with Jayden Grimes on a 10-yard touchdown pass, capping a seven-play, 74-yard drive. The Rams took a 7-0 lead with 9:04 remaining in the first quarter.

Fayetteville State answered quickly. Bryce Council returned the ensuing kickoff 41 yards to the FSU 41-yard line, providing excellent field position. Six plays later, Council punched in a 14-yard touchdown run with 5:51 left in the quarter to tie the game at 7-7.

The Broncos took their first lead of the game as time expired in the first quarter. Quarterback Joe Owens Jr. orchestrated a six-play, 51-yard drive that culminated in a 17-yard touchdown pass to Kahlil Ashley-Diarrah as the clock hit zero, giving Fayetteville State a 14-7 advantage heading into the second quarter.

The game's momentum swung back to Winston-Salem State early in the second period when Noah Marshall broke free for a 71-yard touchdown run just 49 seconds into the quarter, tying the score at 14-14. Marshall's explosive play was part of a two-play, 75-yard drive that took less than a minute off the clock.

The Rams quickly reclaimed the lead when Lee found Grimes again, this time for a 37-yard touchdown strike. The scoring pass came on a five-play, 80-yard drive that consumed 2:47 and gave Winston-Salem State a 21-14 lead with 6:31 remaining in the half.

Fayetteville State refused to let the Rams take that advantage into halftime. The Broncos mounted an 11-play, 70-yard drive in the final 1:44 of the second quarter. Owens completed passes to Kristian Golden for 12 yards and 13 yards, and scrambled for 19 yards himself to move the ball deep into Winston-Salem State territory. When the drive stalled, John Hernandez-Vargas converted a 27-yard field goal as time expired, cutting the deficit to 21-17 at the break.

The halftime adjustments proved decisive for Fayetteville State. The Broncos took the second-half kickoff and embarked on a 14-play, 75-yard drive that consumed 6:26 of the third quarter. Council ripped off a 20-yard run early in the possession, and Owens connected with Unique Kelly for a 12-yard gain to convert a first down. The drive appeared to stall near the goal line, but Winston-Salem State was called for pass interference on third-and-10 from the 10-yard line, moving the ball to the 2-yard line. Caden Davis converted the short-yardage opportunity with a 1-yard touchdown plunge, giving the Broncos a 24-21 lead with 8:34 left in the third quarter.

The Broncos defense, which had yielded 21 points in the first half, locked down after intermission. Winston-Salem State managed just 22 yards on five plays during its only third-quarter possession, and the Rams would not score again.

Fayetteville State extended its lead early in the fourth quarter. Following the defensive stop, the Broncos drove 65 yards in 10 plays. Braylon Vinson capped the drive with a 13-yard touchdown run on the first play of the final period, pushing the advantage to 31-21 with 14:53 remaining.

Winston-Salem State tried to mount a comeback. The Rams put together a 13-play drive that reached the Fayetteville State 26-yard line, but Lee's pass was intercepted by Kaydin Thomas at the FSU 27 with 6:52 left in the game. The turnover ended Winston-Salem State's best scoring opportunity of the second half.

The Rams forced a punt and got the ball back at their own 25-yard line with 3:12 remaining. Lee completed passes to Grimes and Ruff, and JaQuan Kelly converted a fourth-and-2 with a 12-yard run to keep the drive alive at the Winston-Salem State 45. But the comeback attempt ended when Shawn Robinson sacked Lee for a 9-yard loss, and two plays later, Amari Best intercepted Lee's pass at the Fayetteville State 19-yard line with 50 seconds remaining. Council's three consecutive carries ran out the clock and sealed the victory.

Owens finished 18-of-24 passing for 195 yards and one touchdown, while Davis added a 4-yard completion on his only pass attempt. Owens also contributed 39 yards rushing on six carries. Council led all rushers with 91 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries, while also hauling in three receptions for 32 yards. Vinson added 56 yards and a score on eight rushing attempts, and Davis rushed for 24 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.

Kelly paced the receiving corps with three catches for 47 yards, while Ashley-Diarrah recorded five receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown. Golden added three catches for 34 yards, and Council contributed three receptions for 32 yards out of the backfield.

Lee completed 15-of-23 passes for 193 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions for Winston-Salem State. Marshall carried five times for 77 yards and a touchdown, averaging 15.4 yards per attempt. Kelly rushed 12 times for 60 yards, and Timothy TJ Ruff added 31 yards on five carries.

Grimes caught five passes for 59 yards and both of the Rams' touchdown receptions. Davontay Deloatch led Winston-Salem State receivers with four catches for 70 yards, while Kelly added two receptions for 22 yards.

Defensively, Camden Martin paced the Rams with 12 tackles, including six solo stops. Evan Powell recorded nine tackles, and Jamieson Alston contributed eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Jaylyn Norris registered the Rams' only sack, bringing down Davis for a 6-yard loss in the third quarter.

Matthew Leach led Fayetteville State's defense with eight tackles. Reginald Troutman added seven tackles, while Keyshawn Monk contributed five stops. Best, Thomas and Ford each recorded interceptions, giving the Broncos a decisive 3-0 edge in the turnover battle. Robinson registered 1.5 sacks for 9 yards in losses.

Fayetteville State converted 10-of-14 third-down attempts and went 5-for-5 in the red zone, scoring four touchdowns and one field goal. The Broncos outgained Winston-Salem State 409-356 in total offense and held a 210-163 advantage in rushing yards. Fayetteville State maintained possession for 32:52 compared to Winston-Salem State's 27:08.

The Rams converted just 3-of-9 third downs and struggled to sustain drives in the second half, managing only three first downs after halftime. Winston-Salem State went 1-for-1 in red zone opportunities, scoring a touchdown on its only trip inside the 20-yard line.

FAYETTEVILLE – Johnson C. Smith scored the winning touchdown with 13 seconds remaining to complete a comeback victory over Fayetteville State on Friday afternoon in Fayetteville. The Golden Bulls improved to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play, while the Broncos fell to 5-4 and 5-1.

Trailing 14-10 with 3:22 left in the game, Johnson C. Smith quarterback Kelvin Durham engineered a nine-play, 69-yard drive that consumed the final three minutes. Bobby Smith finished the march with a six-yard touchdown run, and Lukasz Smolen's extra point provided the final margin.

The winning drive featured Durham's 15-yard scramble to the Fayetteville State 29-yard line on a first-and-15 play, keeping the drive alive after a false start penalty. The Golden Bulls faced another obstacle when Durham was sacked for an 11-yard loss by Shawn Robinson, creating a third-and-21 situation from the 30-yard line. Durham found Clinton Riley for 12 yards, then converted on fourth-and-9 with a 12-yard run to the six-yard line before Smith's decisive score.

Fayetteville State erased a 10-0 deficit with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Bryce Council's 21-yard touchdown run at 13:25 of the final period cut the margin to 10-7. The Broncos took their only lead with 3:28 remaining when Demari Daniels connected with Xayden Watson on a 52-yard touchdown pass, capping a five-play, 92-yard drive that took just 88 seconds.

That scoring drive began at the Fayetteville State eight-yard line following a punt. Daniels completed a 14-yard pass to Unique Kelly, then found Watson streaking down the middle for the touchdown. John Hernandez-Vargas converted the extra point to give the Broncos a 14-10 advantage.

Johnson C. Smith controlled possession for more than 38 minutes compared to Fayetteville State's 21:37. The Golden Bulls ran 68 offensive plays to the Broncos' 50 and held a 328-236 advantage in total yardage.

The game remained scoreless until Johnson C. Smith drove 57 yards in 10 plays on its second possession. The drive stalled at the Fayetteville State 13-yard line, but Smolen converted a 32-yard field goal with 3:36 left in the opening quarter.

Johnson C. Smith extended its lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter. Taking over at the Fayetteville State 30-yard line after a failed fourth-down conversion, the Golden Bulls needed six plays to reach the end zone. Durham capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run at 2:44 of the second period.

Durham set up the score with a 13-yard completion to Lane, reaching the four-yard line. After a one-yard rush, Durham scored on a three-yard run two plays later.

Fayetteville State struggled to generate offense through the first three quarters. The Broncos managed just 87 rushing yards on 25 attempts and completed 16 of 25 passes for 149 yards. Daniels accounted for all of Fayetteville State's passing production, finishing 16-for-25 with one touchdown and no interceptions.

Council led the Broncos' ground attack with 78 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, averaging six yards per attempt. His 21-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter came on third-and-7 from the Johnson C. Smith 21-yard line, breaking through the middle for the touchdown.

Deandre Proctor caught six passes for 57 yards to lead Johnson C. Smith's receiving corps. Lane added three receptions for 22 yards, while Cayden Bell-McKethan had one catch for 25 yards. Durham spread the ball to eight different receivers.

Watson's two receptions totaled 62 yards and the touchdown for Fayetteville State. Kelly caught three passes for 35 yards, and Kahlil Ashley-Diarrah had four receptions for 23 yards.

The Golden Bulls converted six of 14 third-down attempts and went one-for-one on fourth down. Fayetteville State converted four of 13 third downs but failed on its only fourth-down attempt in regulation.

Penalties proved costly for both teams. Johnson C. Smith was flagged 10 times for 85 yards, while Fayetteville State committed seven penalties for 67 yards. Several of those infractions came at crucial moments, including multiple pass interference calls and false start penalties that disrupted drives.

Jatavien Taylor recorded an interception for Fayetteville State in the second quarter, returning it three yards to set up the Broncos at their own 26-yard line. The turnover ended a Johnson C. Smith drive that had reached the Fayetteville State 35-yard line.

FAYETTEVILLE – Fayetteville State shook off an early deficit and seized control with 31 unanswered points across the second and third quarters, beating Livingstone 38-14 on Saturday at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium. The Broncos improved to 4-3 overall and remained undefeated in CIAA conference play at 4-0, while the Blue Bears fell to 3-3 and 2-2 in league action.

The game began with Livingstone drawing first blood. After a methodical five-play, 44-yard drive, quarterback Elijah Alexander punched in a one-yard touchdown run with 2:52 remaining in the opening quarter. Jason Zapata's extra point gave the Blue Bears a 7-0 advantage.

Fayetteville State answered before the quarter ended. Following a 37-yard completion from Demari Daniels to Kristian Golden that moved the ball to the Livingstone 28, running back Bryce Council capped a six-play, 65-yard march with a four-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds left in the first. John Hernandez-Vargas converted the kick to level the score at 7-7.

The Broncos took their first lead early in the second quarter after capitalizing on a blocked punt. Daniels completed 11 of 20 passes for 114 yards and one touchdown while rushing 11 times for 53 yards. Council carried the ball 14 times for 46 yards and a score. Vinson finished with 44 yards and a touchdown on six rushing attempts and added one reception for 11 yards and another score. Golden led all receivers with four catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

The Broncos controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the contest, racking up seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss. Kaydin Thomas recorded two sacks and two tackles for loss, while Johnson added two sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. Keyshawn Monk contributed six tackles and an interception. Ryan Debow recovered a muffed punt in the fourth quarter, and Robinson's fumble recovery set up a touchdown in the third.

Fayetteville State held Livingstone to 206 total yards—65 rushing and 141 passing. The Broncos won the turnover battle 3-0, forced the Blue Bears into 14 third-down attempts and allowed just two conversions, and went a perfect six-for-six in the red zone with five touchdowns and one field goal.

Parker led Livingstone with 91 yards on 13 carries, including the 53-yard burst in the third quarter. Alexander completed six of 14 passes for 106 yards but was sacked five times and threw one interception. Sotelo came on in relief and went two-for-eight for 35 yards. Jackson caught three passes for 52 yards, and Davyn Reid added three receptions for 50 yards.

Defensively, Kenyon Garner paced the Blue Bears with seven tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. Kevin Larkins Jr. recorded eight tackles, while Malachi Adkins and Zavion Lloyd each finished with seven. Jayden Reeder added three tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack.

Fayetteville State outgained Livingstone 294-206 and held a decisive 156-65 edge in rushing yards. The Broncos converted four of 14 third-down opportunities and controlled possession for 33:56 compared to 26:04 for the Blue Bears. Fayetteville State also averaged 4.3 yards per play to Livingstone's 3.6.

The game featured a halftime ceremony honoring former Fayetteville State standout Joshua Williams, who now plays cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs. The university retired his jersey in recognition of his contributions to the program.

Fayetteville State will enjoy a bye week before traveling to face Shaw at 1 p.m. on October 25 at Durham County Stadium. Livingstone returns to action next Saturday, October 18, when it hosts Winston-Salem State at 1 p.m.

FAYETTEVILLE – Fayetteville State made the most of its first home game of the season, overwhelming Virginia State 34-14 on Saturday afternoon at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium behind a dominant rushing attack and opportunistic defense that created short fields throughout the contest.

The Broncos (3-3, 2-0 CIAA) controlled the line of scrimmage from start to finish, rushing for 205 yards while holding Virginia State to just 22 yards on the ground. Running back Bryce Council led the charge with 157 yards on 21 carries, averaging 7.5 yards per attempt with one touchdown.

After a scoreless first quarter that featured two interceptions by each team, Fayetteville State broke through early in the second period. Council sparked the offense with a 59-yard burst that set up his own 23-yard touchdown run with 9:31 remaining in the half, capping a five-play, 80-yard drive.

The Broncos extended their lead just over two minutes later when linebacker Amari Best blocked a Virginia State punt and recovered it at the Trojans' 33-yard line. Quarterback Demari Daniels needed just one play to find the end zone, connecting with receiver Unique Kelly on a 33-yard touchdown pass that made it 14-0.

Virginia State (2-3, 1-1 CIAA) answered before halftime when quarterback Rahsaan Matthews Jr. found Malik Hunter for a 27-yard touchdown pass, completing a nine-play, 77-yard drive that cut the deficit to 14-7 at the break.

The third quarter opened with fireworks as Virginia State's Isaiah Silver returned the opening kickoff 69 yards to the Fayetteville State 22-yard line, though the return was nullified by a holding penalty. The Trojans eventually tied the game at 14-14 when Matthews Jr. punched in a 4-yard touchdown run, finishing an 11-play, 85-yard drive.

Fayetteville State responded immediately. Daniels found receiver Kristian Golden for a 33-yard touchdown pass just over three minutes later, restoring the Broncos' lead at 21-14. The scoring drive covered 70 yards in six plays and showcased the balanced attack that would define the afternoon.

The fourth quarter belonged entirely to the Broncos' defense and special teams. Defensive back Keyshawn Monk intercepted Matthews Jr. at the Fayetteville State 10-yard line, ending a promising Virginia State drive. After the Broncos were forced to punt, Best recorded his second interception of the game, picking off Matthews Jr. deep in Bronco territory.

Fayetteville State capitalized on the turnover with an eight-play, 90-yard touchdown drive. Council broke free for a 28-yard run to set up the score, and Daniels finished the drive himself with a 28-yard rushing touchdown that extended the lead to 28-14 with 2:57 remaining.

The final blow came just 15 seconds later when Virginia State's offensive struggles continued. PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke earned their first victory of the season with a 31-24 win over Fayetteville State at Grace P. Johnson Stadium in Pembroke, North Carolina on Saturday night. The Braves improved to 1-1 while the Broncos dropped to 0-2 in a game that featured 55 combined points and 682 total yards of offense.

The game began with promise for Fayetteville State, as they recovered a fumble deep in UNC Pembroke territory and converted it into the opening score. After forcing a three-and-out, the Broncos capitalized on excellent field position when Marcus Thompson recovered a Tre Robinson fumble at the Pembroke 17-yard line. Three plays later, Caden Davis punched it in from one yard out to give FSU a 7-0 lead with 9:52 remaining in the first quarter.

UNC Pembroke answered immediately with a methodical 44-yard touchdown drive. Robinson found his rhythm, connecting with Que Kennedy for a 4-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7. The Braves' passing attack, which would prove to be the difference, was just getting started. Robinson completed 13 of 20 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns on the night.

The first quarter belonged to Kennedy and Robinson's connection. After FSU went three-and-out following back-to-back false start penalties, Pembroke took over at their own 50-yard line. The Broncos (4-4, 3-3) controlled every phase of the game against Johnson C. Smith (8-1, 5-1), combining an efficient offense with a smothering defense that held one of the region's top teams scoreless. The victory marked Fayetteville State's most significant win of the season and introduced uncertainty into JCSU's playoff positioning just days before the release of the initial NCAA Division II Super Region Two rankings.

After a scoreless first quarter, Fayetteville State broke through with an impressive 16-play, 90-yard drive that showcased their offensive capabilities. FAYETTEVILLE – In a thrilling edition of the Two Rivers Classic, Fayetteville State University staged a dramatic last-minute comeback to defeat UNC Pembroke 35-31 on Saturday night at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium. The victory gives Fayetteville State a 1-0 start to the season, while UNC Pembroke falls to 0-2.

The game was a back-and-forth affair that saw multiple lead changes throughout the contest. UNC Pembroke struck first when quarterback Tre Robinson connected with Josiah Hayes for a 5-yard touchdown pass. Fayetteville State responded with two field goals by John Hernandez-Vargas, narrowing the gap.

The Broncos took their first lead of the game on a 23-yard punt return touchdown by Theniias Moss. However, the advantage was short-lived as UNC Pembroke's D'Marcus Harrington intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown, putting the Braves back in front.

SALEM, VA – In a thrilling showdown for the CIAA Championship, Virginia Union took down Fayetteville State, 21-10, at Salem Stadium on Saturday afternoon. 

The first quarter set the tone for the game, with Virginia Union taking an early lead. Jada Byers led the charge with a 1-yard rushing touchdown, putting Virginia Union ahead 7-0. The extra point by Brady Myers was successful. Virginia Union continued to dominate in the second quarter, with Christian Reid adding another touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0 after Myers' successful extra point. However, Fayetteville State quickly responded with a spectacular 91-yard kickoff return by Barry Elliott, bringing the score to 14-7 after Jacob Meneses's extra point.

Fayetteville State clawed its way back into the game in the third quarter. Jacob Meneses kicked a field goal, closing the gap to 14-10. The Tar Heels was a 63-61 opening week barnburner in Boone last season and are looking to start their season 2-0 after an impressive win against South Carolina last week. A three-game series (two in Chapel Hill and one in Boone) comes to an end with Saturday's sold-out game. In addition to a sold-out crowd, App State's 34-31 triumph in 2019 included Kenan Stadium, and North Carolina’s 63-61 victory in Boone last year featured a record 40,168 spectators in Kidd Brewer Stadium. The final seconds of each of those games determined the winner. App State defeated FCS opponent Gardner-Webb 45-24 in their season opener. Joey Aguilar, who took over for injured quarterback Ryan Burger late in the first half, completed 11 of 13 passes for 174 yards and four touchdowns. On his first App State snap, he threw a touchdown pass. With the win over South Carolina, Mack Brown became the first head coach to win 100 games at two FBS schools. Kaimon Rucker was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week after his impressive performance against South Carolina leading a North Carolina defense that held South Carolina to -2 yards rushing.

Elon at Gardner-Webb: Gardner-Webb will play host to in-state foe Elon this Saturday at Spangler Stadium and broadcast on ESPN+. Elon currently holds the series advantage with a record of 22-11, with Gardner-Webb winning the first 11 games from 1970 through 1982. Since 2001, the two teams have split their past six matches 3-3. In the previous season, Gardner-Webb had a 24-20 lead against the Phoenix on the road, but Elon defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs 30-24 by holding Gardner-Webb without a goal in the second half. Gardner-Webb enters this week's match looking for its first win of the season after falling to FBS Appalachian State 45–24. Three catches for a career-high 67 yards, three touchdowns overall, and two running touchdowns were all recorded by Jayden Brown. After losing to ACC opponent Wake Forest 37-17, Elon also enters this game at 0-1. At halftime, the Phoenix was down 24-0, but by the start of the fourth quarter, the deficit had shrunk to 30-14. Caleb Curtain added one sack and returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown. Elon led the CAA with 34 total sacks last season when it sacked the Demon Deacons four times on Thursday.

Lenoir-Rhyne at Fayetteville State: The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears will face off against the Fayetteville State Broncos in a college football game on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 6 p.m. at the Luther Nick Jeralds Stadium in Fayetteville, N.C. This will be the first meeting between the two teams in the 104-year history of LR football. The Bears are hoping to move to 2-0 on the young season with a win over Fayetteville St. This would be their second time under Mike Jacobs and only their fifth 2-0 start this century. In week one, Lenoir-Rhyne dominated St. Augustine’s with a 45-7 victory. The defense held the Falcons to just three first downs and 52 total yards, while special teams scored two touchdowns.

Fayetteville St. was a controversial selection to the 2022 NCAA Division II Playoffs but were bested by Delta St. in the opening round. They opened their season with a loss to UNC Pembroke, accounting for just 258 total yards of offense and turning the ball over twice. Defensively, they held Pembroke to just 42 yards rushing but were gashed in the passing game. Kentrell Caldwell and Cameron Merrell were named to the preseason watch list for the HBCU football player of the year award and anchor one of the best defensive units in the region. FSU was predicted to finish first in the preseason CIAA coaches poll.

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA announced the Division II football playoff field Sunday evening and two North Carolina schools, Wingate and Fayetteville State, were among the seven schools in Super Region 2. Wingate, representing the South Atlantic Conference, is in the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years. Fayetteville State boosted its playoff resume by winning the CIAA championship this past Saturday.

Benedict is the top seed in the region, followed by Delta State, West Florida, and Virginia Union. Benedict gets an opening round bye, with Delta State, West Florida, and Virginia Union hosting games. Wingate, Fayetteville State, and Limestone round out the region. Delta State hosts Fayetteville State while Wingate will travel to Virginia Union.

Twelve first-round games will be conducted on the campus of one of the competing institutions. In addition, one team per super regional has earned a first-round bye. The first-round winners will all advance to the second round with games on the campus of one of the competing institutions. Second-round winners will meet in the quarterfinals at various campus sites. Quarterfinal winners will advance to play in the semifinals on the campus of one of the competing institutions. Seven teams selected per super regional make up the field of 28 teams.

Ryder Martin also hauled in a TD catch. Ra'Quan Simmons had two receptions for 31 yards. Kalen Clark added 58 rushing yards on 17 carries. O'Brien Barnett added 17 yards on four rushing attempts.

Kiki Alcime had four tackles including a pair of tackles for loss. Davon Gilmore also had four stops with a TFL. Jaheim Mullen contributed four tackles. DJ Horne, Carlos Estronza, and Antoine Shaw each had a sack. Tre Morrison had an interception and two pass breakups. Ethan Evans averaged 47.3 yards on six punts, with three going over 50 yards. He also made all three PATs and had a pair of touchbacks.

Avery McCall led all Fayetteville State rushers with 38 yards in the contest. Nique Martin hauled in two catches for 11 yards. Anthon Binyard led the Fayetteville State defensive effort, totaling three tackles and one recovered fumble. Cedric Thomas added one recovered fumble and Khalid Martin had 10 tackles and one recovered fumble in the loss.

Both teams open their conference slate next week as Wingate (2-0) plays on the road for the third straight week to open the season, taking on Tusculum in SAC play, while Fayetteville State (1-1) will travel to Lincoln PA in a CIAA tilt.
