Carolina Gridiron ranks the top fifteen teams in each classification weekly during the football season. During the season, teams are ranked based on a number of factors including strength of schedule, wins, and quality losses. With a roster that includes four Top-100 recruits, defending 4AA runner-up Mallard Creek takes the top spot in 4A while 3A #1 Charlotte Catholic is looking for its third title in four years. Hibriten, coming off its first state title, is looking to repeat in 2A. Defending 1AA Tarboro holds the top spot in the 1A classification. The FAIR rankings are based on the following criteria.

Fresh start - All teams in a particular class start the season with identical ratings, or none at all.
All games weighted equally - There is no distinction made between conference and non-conference games, and a week one endowment game counts just as much as a week twelve contest.
Ignore non-NCHSAA games - Because the quality of opponents outside the NCHSAA can vary widely and can be difficult to judge, only NCHSAA games will be counted. Any contests against NCISAA or out-of-state opponents will be treated the same as an open date.
Reproducible - The formulas used should be transparent and simple enough that coaches and members of the media can verify the calculations for a particular team.

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) finalized and released the playoff brackets for the 2017 Football Championships. The tournament will have eight classifications of play with five playoff rounds each. The 1A, 1AA, 4A and 4AA brackets will field a complement of 24 teams each with 2A, 2AA, 3A and 3AA brackets fielding 32 teams each. AA and A brackets were based on the average daily membership of the participating schools.

Play is scheduled to begin with games at the higher seed through the first four rounds beginning with first-round contests on November 10th. The second round is scheduled for November 17th, the third round is slated for November 24th, and the Regional Finals are planned for December 1st.

The State Championship Games will be contested on Saturday, December 9th at NC State's Carter-Finley Stadium, North Carolina's Kenan Stadium, Duke's Wallace Wade Stadium and Wake Forest's BB&T Field. Play is scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon.
