Final FAIR Rankings of the Year Released

9:15 PM

The FAIR rankings are based on the following criteria.

Fresh start - All teams in a particular class start the season with identical ratings, or none at all.
All games weighted equally - There is no distinction made between conference and non-conference games, and a week one endowment game counts just as much as a week twelve contest.
Ignore non-NCHSAA games - Because the quality of opponents outside the NCHSAA can vary widely and can be difficult to judge, only NCHSAA games will be counted. Any contests against NCISAA or out-of-state opponents will be treated the same as an open date.
Reproducible - The formulas used should be transparent and simple enough that coaches and members of the media can verify the calculations for a particular team.

Congratulations to Middle Creek, Terry Sanford, Shelby, and Wallace-Rose Hill for finishing #1 in their classifications.

Battle of Sun Belt Unbeatens Thursday Night at Kidd Brewer Stadium

8:56 PM
The stage is set for one of the biggest games in Sun Belt Conference history when Appalachian State (7-1, 4-0 Sun Belt) hosts Arkansas State (5-3, 4-0 Sun Belt) in a nationally televised showdown on Thursday night at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Thursday’s game marks only the second time in Sun Belt history that two teams with undefeated records in conference play are meeting this late in the calendar year. The only other time that two teams with unblemished Sun Belt records met this late in a season came on Nov. 16, 2002 when North Texas (5-5, 4-0 Sun Belt) played New Mexico State (6-4, 4-0 Sun Belt). The Mean Green defeated the Aggies, 38-27.

The Mountaineers and Red Wolves are the last two remaining teams that are undefeated in Sun Belt play this season.

Appalachian State has won 10-straight Sun Belt games, good for the fourth-longest conference winning streak in Sun Belt history. Appalachian’s 10-game Sun Belt winning streak includes an impressive 37-32 triumph at Arkansas State on Nov. 15 of last season. The Mountaineers dominated the action for much of the afternoon, jumping out to a 37- 20 lead before withstanding a late A-State run to hold on for the victory.

The Mountaineers have also won six straight games overall and 13 of their last 14 contests, dating back to the midpoint of last season. Appalachian State’s’ 7-1 start this season is the best record ever for a Sun Belt Conference team through eight games. App State moved to 7-1 with last Saturday’s 44-41 triple-overtime victory over Troy.

Despite surrendering 41 points and a season-high 450 yards in the win over Troy, Appalachian State is the only NCAA Division I FBS team that ranks among the nation’s top 15 in both scoring defense (8th - 15.6 ppg) and total offense (15th - 38.8 ppg).

The Mountaineers are one of only four FBS teams that rank among the top 25 nationally in both total defense (12th - 298.6 ypg) and total offense (23rd - 475.8 ypg). Appalachian State continues to lead the Sun Belt Conference in scoring and total defense and scoring and total offense.

Arkansas State also survived an upset-minded opponent last Saturday when it came back from a 34-27 fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Georgia State, 48-34.

This week’s game is Appalachian State’s second Thursday home game in three weeks against an undefeated Sun Belt foe. The Mountaineers ended Georgia Southern’s 11-game conference winning streak when it belted the Eagles, 31-13, on ESPNU on Thursday, Oct. 22.

UNC To Take on Pitt Thursday Night

8:52 PM
Just five days after a tough 26-13 victory over Virginia, North Carolina travels to No. 23 Pittsburgh for an important Coastal Division matchup. The Tar Heels have won six in a row and are 6-1 overall and 3-0 in league play for the first time since 1997.

Pitt is also 6-1 with the only loss coming at nationally ranked Iowa. Pittsburgh is the first ranked opponent the Tar Heels have faced since last year’s Thursday night game at No. 25 Duke.

Last week, Carolina limited the Cavaliers to 127 yards (72 rushing, 55 passing) in the second half and shut out Virginia in the last two quarters. The Tar Heels forced five turnovers, intercepting four passes for the first time since 2013. Tailback Elijah Hood rushed for 101 yards and a pair of 3-yard touchdown runs.

Pitt won its fourth consecutive game by kicking a 25-yard field goal as time expired to win at Syracuse. The Panthers ate up the last 9:20 of the game on a 19-play drive before booting the gamewinner.

The Pitt game is just the second road game for the Tar Heels, who play nine of 12 games this season inside the state of North Carolina. Following the Pitt game, Carolina returns to Chapel Hill for a pair of home games against Duke and Miami.

QUICK HITS
  • Carolina is the only school in the country that has not allowed a punt return this season.
  • Carolina has allowed just 45 points in the second half in seven games – 6.4 points per game. (South Carolina – 7 points; North Carolina A&T – 14; Illinois – 7; Delaware – 7; Georgia Tech – 10; Wake Forest – 0; Virginia – 0)
  • Senior wide receiver Quinshad Davis has 180 career receptions and is just two shy of passing Hakeem Nicks (181) to become the school’s all-time leader. He is already UNC’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 22.
  • Marquise Williams needs just 14 yards to become only the fifth quarterback in ACC history with 2,000 career rushing yards. Williams ranks 14th in UNC history with 1,986 yards.
  • Williams has been responsible for 76 career touchdowns, which is three shy of the school record of 79 held by Darian Durant (2001-04) and ranks 10th in ACC history. Williams has rushed for 27 scores (UNC record for QB), passed for 46 and has three receiving TDs.
  • For the second straight week, North Carolina is the only unranked Power 5 conference team in the country with just one loss.

2015 NCHSAA Football Championship Game Times Set

7:43 PM
CHAPEL HILL – Interim commissioner Que Tucker of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced today the game times for the eight NCHSAA football championship games for the 2015 season, which will be played at three locations.

BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh and Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill will be the sites of the championship contests.

Kenan Stadium returns to the rotation after a one-year absence.  Kenan had hosted at least one football championship game since 1989 as the NCHSAA made a push for neutral sites, including collegiate facilities, for many of its state championships.  But Kenan was not available in 2014 due to extensive work on the field.

Kenan will host two games, including one on Friday night, December 11 and one on Saturday, December 12, while three games will be played at BB&T Field and Carter-Finley Stadium, all on December 12.

Kenan Stadium - Chapel Hill

Games at Kenan will include the 3-A championship at 7:35 pm on Friday and then the championship game for the 3-AA bracket on Saturday at 12:05 p.m.

Carter-Finley Stadium - Raleigh

The schedule at Carter-Finley will have Saturday games starting with the 4-AA championship at 12:05 p.m., followed by the 2-A final at 4:05 p.m. and the 2-AA championship at 8:05 p.m.

BB&T Field - Winston-Salem

At BB&T Field, the Saturday games will start with the 1-AA contest at 12:05 pm, the 1-A final at 4:05 p.m. and then the 4-A championship at 8:05 p.m.

No. 20 Charleston Southern Blanks Gardner-Webb, 34-0

7:53 PM
BOILING SPRINGS – No. 20 Charleston Southern raced to a 21-0 halftime lead and clamped down defensively to beat Gardner-Webb, 34-0, Saturday afternoon at Ernest W. Spangler Stadium.

It marked the first time GWU (2-5, 1-2 Big South) had been shut out in Spangler Stadium since October 26, 2013 vs. Liberty.

The first-place Bucaneers (6-1, 3-0 Big South) will host top-ranked Coastal Carolina (7-0, 2-0 Big South) next Saturday afternoon.

Both teams held their ground in the game’s early going, before Charleston Southern got a quick scoring drive on the strength of Austin Brown’s arm. The senior quarterback hit Kenny Dinkins down the right side for a 32-yard touchdown that capped a 4-play, 61-yard march.

The Buccaneers put together a lengthy, sustained drive for their second score, taking advantage of a roughing the passer foul to keep the drive alive – and a pass interference call on third down in the GWU end zone to set up first and goal from the two. Ben Robinson punched in one play later to cap the 10-play, 72-yard scoring drive and CSU led 14-0.

Gardner-Webb finally got into Charleston Southern territory on its next drive, getting a 24-yard scramble from Tyrell Maxwell to get to the CSU 48, but the drive stalled from there. The Bucs answered with a six-play, 80-yard drive that culminated with a 38-yard scoring toss from Brown to Mike Holloway for a 21-0 lead with 3:40 to play before the half.

Charleston Southern added to its lead two drives into the second quarter, getting a wheel route open down the left side – which allowed Brown to connect with Robinson on a 24-yard scoring play. The extra point missed, but CSU was in control with a 27-0 lead.

Another deep drive by CSU ended in a missed 26-yard field goal with 25 seconds left on the third quarter clock, but Solomon Brown picked off a Maxwell pass on first down and returned it 28 yards for a defensive touchdown and the final margin.

Gardner-Webb was limited to a season-low 110 yards of total offense on 52 plays.

Charleston Southern finished with 391 yards on 68 plays, gaining 189 on the ground and 202 through the air. Brown was efficient, completing 14-of-24 attempts for those 202 yards and three scores. He had just 12 yards on the ground, but Robinson (58 yards, TD), Holloway (36 yards), Alan Barnwell (31 yards) and Hammond (29 yards) paced a ground game that saw eight different ball carriers in the game.

Gardner-Webb was led defensively by Tanner Burch (13 tackles), Azziz Higgins (11 tackles) and Chad Geter (10 tackles) and saw Higgins break up two passes from his linebacker spot.

Aaron Brown had 11 hits to pace the Buccaneers’ effort defensively, with nose guard Caleb Batchelor finishing with six hits, 2.0 tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry. Brown also had seven hits to go with his interception return for a score.

Gardner-Webb begins a two-game league road trip next Saturday, traveling to Presbyterian for a Halloween battle at 2:00 pm in Clinton, S.C. (Big South Network).
