Duke Looking for Second ACC Win Against Pitt

9:26 PM
Duke heads into Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh looking to improve to 5-3. A win would give the Blue Devils a 5-3 record or better through eight games for the fifth time in the last six seasons. It would be the fifth time in 10 campaigns under head coach David Cutcliffe that the Blue Devils reached five wins. In the 13 seasons prior to Cutcliffe taking over the program, the Blue Devils never won five or more games in a year. The program already has its longest streak of consecutive four or more win campaigns (six) since a seven-year stretch from 1985 to 1991.

The Blue Devils and Panthers will meet for the 22nd time Saturday with Pittsburgh holding a 12-9 advantage in the all-time series. The teams have met 11 times in the Bull City, with Pittsburgh owning a 7-4 lead. The Panthers have won the last four trips to Durham with Duke last capturing a home win against Pittsburgh with a 21-13 triumph October 9, 1965. Since Pittsburgh joined the ACC for the 2013 campaign, the Panthers have won three of the four meetings.

Duke's Wallace Wade Stadium

Duke and Pittsburgh met in the first game played in Duke Stadium (now Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium) on October 5, 1929, with the Panthers winning, 52-7. On November 27, 1937, Pittsburgh became the first No. 1 ranked opponent to visit Durham, topping the No. 18 Blue Devils, 10-0. On November 26, 1938, No. 3 Duke downed No. 4 Pittsburgh, 7-0, in Durham to conclude an unbeaten, untied and unscored upon regular season. In 1939, Pitt handed the Blue Devils their lone loss of the year with a 14-13 decision on October 14 in Pittsburgh. Duke went 9-1, won the Southern Conference crown and was ranked eighth in the final Associated Press national poll. On September 29, 1951, Duke and Pittsburgh played in the first nationally televised football game on NBC with the Blue Devils capturing a 19-14 win.

Duke defeated Northwestern and Baylor in September to record two Power 5 non-conference wins for the first time since topping Northwestern and Tennessee in 1988. The Blue Devils have defeated programs from the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC so far this year.

What the Coaches are Saying

Duke coach David Cutcliffe
"This is a game you better strap your chin strap up tight and go play football. I guess we’ll find out Saturday because we don’t have a choice. When you play Pitt, you know what’s coming. Your defensive front and offensive front are going to be challenged. It’s good for us… “I’ll say this about Pitt in the two years [head coach] Pat Narduzzi has been there – they play all three phases about as well as anyone. They’re very well coached. They can beat you in the kicking game. They can beat you on offense. They play outstanding team defense. They are always a challenge. They will challenge all three phases of Duke football."

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi
"We're still young in some spots, but we move on to a very good Duke football team that won the first four, lost the last few to Florida State, Miami, Virginia, I believe, and they're well-coached by Coach Cutcliffe. Defensively they're a good football team. I think 16th in the country in rush defense, 19th in total defense. They're really good there, and they're very solid. Obviously Coach Roper and Coach Cutcliffe together I think run that offense, and Coach Cutcliffe being an offensive guru, we face some of the best coaches I think in the country in the ACC. It's impressive."

NC State and Pitt Meet For the First Time as Conference Rivals

10:40 PM
NC State and Pittsburgh will not be meeting for the first time in the history of the two programs, but they will be meeting for the first time as ACC rivals. The Panthers joined the ACC in 2013 and are the only team the Wolfpack has not faced since the latest round of conference expansion took place in 2013 and 2014.

NC State has moved into the top-20 in both major polls this week. The Wolfpack checks in at No. 20 in both the Associated Press and Amway Coaches’ Polls at the midway point of the 2017 regular season. NC State is ranked in the top-20 nationally for the first time since 2003, a No. 14 ranking two games into that season. The Wolfpack has already racked up a pair of wins over ranked teams this season, a 27-21 win at 12th-ranked Florida State and a 39-25 victory over No. 17 Louisville on Thursday night. This season marks the first time the Pack has defeated two ranked ACC foes in the same season since 2006, the first time it has beaten two ranked foes since 2010, and the first time it has defeated two ranked teams in the regular season since 2008.

NC State will face the Panthers at Heinz Field, which also doubles as the home of the NFL’s six-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. It will mark the fourth time the Wolfpack has played in an NFL Stadium under head coach Dave Doeren. NC State is 1-2 in those games, with both losses in neutral site matchups at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium (the 2015 Belk Bowl and earlier this season vs. South Carolina). The Pack is 1-0 as a visitor on a pro field, winning at USF’s Raymond James Stadium in 2014, 49-18.

NC State’s 5-1 start in 2017 ties as the sixth best for a Wolfpack squad since joining the ACC in 1953. Last week’s win over Louisville marked the first time NC State has opened the season 3-0 in ACC play in 15 seasons. In 2002, the most successful season in school history, the Wolfpack opened 4-0 in the ACC and went on to 11 victories. The 2002 campaign was the last time an NC State squad posted a five-game winning streak as well. The Wolfpack started off 9-0 that season.

UNC To Take on Pitt Thursday Night

8:52 PM
Just five days after a tough 26-13 victory over Virginia, North Carolina travels to No. 23 Pittsburgh for an important Coastal Division matchup. The Tar Heels have won six in a row and are 6-1 overall and 3-0 in league play for the first time since 1997.

Pitt is also 6-1 with the only loss coming at nationally ranked Iowa. Pittsburgh is the first ranked opponent the Tar Heels have faced since last year’s Thursday night game at No. 25 Duke.

Last week, Carolina limited the Cavaliers to 127 yards (72 rushing, 55 passing) in the second half and shut out Virginia in the last two quarters. The Tar Heels forced five turnovers, intercepting four passes for the first time since 2013. Tailback Elijah Hood rushed for 101 yards and a pair of 3-yard touchdown runs.

Pitt won its fourth consecutive game by kicking a 25-yard field goal as time expired to win at Syracuse. The Panthers ate up the last 9:20 of the game on a 19-play drive before booting the gamewinner.

The Pitt game is just the second road game for the Tar Heels, who play nine of 12 games this season inside the state of North Carolina. Following the Pitt game, Carolina returns to Chapel Hill for a pair of home games against Duke and Miami.

  • Carolina has converted 48 percent of its third down opportunities this season, which ranks 12th nationally.
  • Carolina has punted just 18 times this year. Only Baylor (17) and Navy (17) have fewer punts.
