Tarboro's Todd Gurley II named AP NC player of the year

11:38 PM
Tarboro's Todd Gurley II named AP NC player of the year
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Todd Gurley II figured he was simply going out on the field to have fun, which would make it easy to perform at a level that would help Tarboro win a third straight state championship. That philosophy also helped him make him this year's Associated Press prep football player of the year for North Carolina.

“I really just go out there and have a lot of fun while I'm playing,” Gurley said. “That's what I feel like: if I have fun doing it, I'll do my best playing in whatever game I'm playing in.”

Gurley ran for nearly 2,600 yards and 36 touchdowns in Tarboro's latest title push. He was the runaway choice for the award, earning 11 of 16 votes from sports writers across the state in results released Thursday. Greensboro Page quarterback James Summers – a North Carolina State recruit – was second with two votes after leading his school to an unbeaten season and the Class 4-AA championship.

Gurley was a Shrine Bowl pick who entered the season ranked No. 1 on The Fayetteville Observer's list of the top 50 college prospects in the state. He's also regarded as an elite sprinter in track who represented the U.S. in international competition last summer.

“What makes him special is he expects to be great,” Tarboro coach Jeff Craddock said. “That's the No. 1 thing. When he steps on that field, in his mind, he expects to be the best player at that time. It doesn't matter if it's the first game of the season, a conference game, the first playoff game, the state championship game, the Shrine Bowl. He has that confidence that when he steps on that field, he believes he's the best.”

Gurley certainly proved that in his final game. He ran for 242 yards and four touchdowns as Tarboro beat Lincolnton 39-36 in the 2-A final, including 197 yards in the second half. He scored the go-ahead 12-yard touchdown with 3:12 left to earn the game's most valuable player award.

Gurley is considering North Carolina, North Carolina State, Clemson or Georgia.

“He's prepared himself,” Craddock said. “A lot of people think, `Well, Todd Gurley is a great athlete.’ I've coached a lot of great athletes. This kid worked his tail off in the weight room and with speed training and doing things the right way. He put himself in position to be this successful.”

Havelock's Bryant named AP coach of year for NC

11:36 PM
Havelock's Bryant named AP coach of year for NC
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Jim Bob Bryant made sure his Havelock team had plenty of motivation after falling a game short of the state final the past two years. He even hung a big picture in the weight room showing an opponent celebrating after ending Havelock's season the previous year.

His players responded with an unbeaten season that helped make Bryant this year's Associated Press prep football coach of the year for North Carolina.

“We always found something to give a little extra motivation to our kids,” Bryant said. “My assistant coaches worked tirelessly and everything we do is a competition. We compete in practice and we compete in the weight room. My coaches do a great job of making everything a competition so the kids keep that edge and are always fighting to be No. 1 in everything we do.”

Bryant led the school to a 16-0 record and the Class 3-A championship in his fourth season. He earned five of 16 votes from sports writers across the state in results released Wednesday.

Tarboro's Jeff Craddock was second with four votes after leading his school to a third straight state title, while Swain County's Sam Pattillo was third with three votes after leading his team to the 1-AA crown.

Havelock had lost to Eastern Alamance in the state semifinals the past two seasons. Bryant and the coaches had a photo blown up of Eastern Alamance's postgame celebration on Havelock's field last season with the words “Never again” written across the bottom. It had literally hung over Havelock's players in the weight room ever since.

“We kind of used that as our rallying cry: never again would we lose in the eastern finals at Havelock,” Bryant said.

The Rams didn't leave much to chance. With an offense that averaged about 50 points and 470 yards per game on the year, Havelock romped through the state playoffs – the Rams had three straight 60-point performance – to reach the final. Then, facing three-time defending champion West Rowan, Havelock rolled to a 38-6 win for the school's second state title.

Bryant's award comes a day after Havelock became one of two schools to have two players make the 2011 AP all-state team for North Carolina.

NCHSAA 2A Championship Postgame Wrap-up

NCHSAA 2A Championship Postgame Wrap-up
It was the matchup that everyone wanted to see last year, but an upset in the regionals kept it from happening. This year, though, nothing was going to stop the matchup between the Lincolnton Wolves and the Tarboro Vikings in the 2A state championship game. Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh was rocking as the two titans met to decide who was the best 2A team in North Carolina. Lincolnton, winners in was the number seed in the West while Tarboro was the two-time defending champions.

Lincolnton won the opening toss and chose to receive. Tarboro kicked out of bounds so the Wolves began their drive at their own 35. And what a drive it was. Using a steady mix of inside Dee Littlejohn runs and Patrick Rendleman passes, the Wolves drove down the field in methodical fashion. When it looked like Tarboro had forced the Wolves to punt, a fake to Dee Littlejohn kept the chains moving and the clock running. A 3 yard score by Michael Cunningham gave the Wolves a 6-0 lead. While Lincolnton only drove 65 yards, they took 9 minutes off of the clock to do so.

Tarboro finally got the ball with a little over 2 minutes remaining in the first quarter and went straight to their running heavy “Tarboro-T” offense. A few short runs inside and long runs outside had the Vikings pounding on the door as the first quarter ended. Todd Gurley scored on the first play of the second quarter and the game was tied at 7.

A fumble by Lincolnton on the first play of their next drive gave the Vikings great field position at the 22 yard line of the Wolves. Larry Jones made Lincolnton pay going in for a score from the 9 yard line. The resulting PAT made it a 7 point lead for Tarboro, 14-7.

When it looked like Tarboro had really turned the momentum on Lincolnton, intercepting a pass and moving downfield for a score, a fumble gave the ball back to the Wolves. When the Wolves were forced to punt, a muff by the Tarboro returner gave the ball right back to Lincolnton. The Wolves tied it up with a Dee Littlejohn 7 yard run and the score at the half was 14 all.

Tarboro came out in the second half determined to put some more points on the board and apply the pressure to a Lincolnton offense that now found some momentum. And the Vikings were successful with a 5 yard touchdown pass, their only pass so far, from Aaron Moore to Tyquan Lewis. The PAT missed, though, and Tarboro led by 6.

Lincolnton immediately answered with a long 88 yard kickoff return for touchdown by Michael Cunningham to give the Wolves a 21-20 lead. Not wanting to be outdone, Todd Gurley answered right back with a long 58 yard touchdown run to make the score 27-21 in favor of the defending champions.

The fourth quarter was a scoring frenzy that began with a Patrick Rendleman score on a 15 yard quarterback option keeper. The kickoff was returned by Tarboro the Lincolnton 31 and Todd Gurley ran it in from there on the next play to make the score 33-28 in favor of Tarboro after another failed PAT.

Lincolnton moved the ball back down the field on their next drive giving the Tarboro defense all they wanted of Dee Littlejohn. As Lincolnton faced a 3rd and 2 from the Tarboro 28, Scott Cloninger again called on Littlejohn to carry the mail and the senior responded with a touchdown run, knocking over two Tarboro defenders on the way. The 2 point conversion was good and the Wolves led 36-33 in the final quarter.

Tarboro went right back on offense and drove down the field. When faced with a 4th down, Tarboro attempted their second pass and the game and converted. Todd Gurley added his fourth touchdown of the game to make the game 39-36. The PAT was no good and the Vikings went to their defense to hold a 3 point lead with less than four minutes left in the game.

The kickoff went into the end zone for a touchback and the Wolves were faced with the task of going 80 yards to win a state championship. On 4th and 6 from the Tarboro 43, the Wolves were unable to convert, giving the ball back to Tarboro. Tarboro star Todd Gurley ran deep into Lincolnton territory seal the deal as the Tarboro faithful celebrated their third straight championship.

2011 NCHSAA 3AA Championship - Postgame Wrap-Up

11:32 PM
2011 NCHSAA 3AA Championship - Postgame Wrap-Up
It’s been said that sequels are never as good as the original.  It looks like that applies to high school football championship games as well.  The lights were shining bright in Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill as the western and eastern regional champions matched up in the 3AA championship game.

Crest won the toss and opted to defer to the second half.  Northern Guilford took the opening kickoff, but was unable to capitalize.  Crest followed their opponent’s lead with their first possession and the first quarter looked like two teams that were feeling each other out.  Northern Guilford opened up the scoring on a 37 yard run by junior tailback TJ Logan.  Logan found a crease and then juked past two Crest defenders on his way to the end zone.  The PAT was no good and the Nighthawks held a 6-0 lead.

Defensively, the Nighthawks held Crest to no first downs in the first quarter and the second quarter looked like it would be more of the same.  But, sophomore quarterback Michael Gullatte found a streaking TJ Logan deep in Northern Guilford territory for a 49 yard gain down to the three yard line.  Florida recruit Rhaheim Ledbetter ran it on the next play and the resulting PAT gave the Chargers a 7-6 lead.

Northern Guilford would not be denied though, and continued to drive the ball down the field with a heavy dose of TJ Logan runs.  Logan had 97 yards rushing and 39 yards receiving in the first half with two touchdowns, the second a 19 yard pass to retake the lead.  A two point conversion was not successful and the Nighthawks took a 12-7 lead into halftime.

Crest received the second half kick-off, but was unable to move the ball and a sack moved the Chargers deep into their own territory.  Forced to punt from their own end zone, Crest gave the Northern Guilford great field position and the Nighthawks took advantage of it with TJ Logan’s third touchdown of the night.  Quarterback Daniel Downing put the Nighthawks into position to score with a run down to the 1.

Northern Guilford’s defense put the Nighthawks into position to score again with an interception by Scooter Mooney.  With the ball on the 1 yard line and fourth down, the Nighthawks again went to TJ Logan, who scored his fourth touchdown of the night.  The third quarter saw Logan finding pay dirt one more time, scoring on a 7 yd end around to the left side.  As the final quarter approached, Northern Guilford’s fans were celebrating a 31-7 lead.

Crest was still unable to move the ball as the fourth quarter began, a stifling Northern Guilford defense filling every gap and breaking up passes.  The Northern Guilford fans cheered as their team still led big with the time falling off the clock.  Nighthawk players celebrated their domination in the championship game with head coach Johnny Roscoe as zeroes filled the clock.  The final score read 31-7 in favor of Northern Guilford

3AA Championship Most Valuable Player TJ Logan finished the game with 204 yards rushing on 29 attempts, 39 yards receiving on 4 receptions, four rushing touchdowns and 1 receiving touchdown.  Also receiving awards for Northern Guilford were outstanding offensive player Daniel Downing and defensive player Scooter Mooney.  Representing Crest were Rhaheim Ledbetter on offense and Jonathan Bullard on defense.
