We’ve reached Round 2 of the state football playoffs, and it’s time for some great football action. The temperatures are dropping towards the freezing mark and while many of the linemen show their toughness by playing without sleeves, the fans are bundling up in the stands. Be sure go out and support your local team this Friday night.
Carolina Gridiron Game of the Week
We’re staying in the 3AA Midwest bracket for this week’s matchup. Any of the teams still alive in the Midwest can make a run for the state title. For this Friday, we’ll be at Keffer Stadium in Charlotte watching the Cougars of Charlotte Catholic take on the Mavericks of Marvin Ridge.
Each team has had success this season, with Marvin Ridge posting a 10-1 record while Catholic is a perfect 11-0. It will be battle of two distinct styles as well. The Cougars run an old-school Wing-T offense to near perfection while the Mavericks run a spread offense utilizing a mix of runs and passes.
Charlotte Catholic is led by legendary coach Jim Oddo who in his 48 years of coaching has won over 300 games. The Cougars won the MEGA 7 3A/4A conference with a perfect conference record of 6-0. This season, the Cougars have outscored their opponents by an average of 29 points, scoring an average of 44 points a game. On defense, the Cougars have only given up 15 points a game, posting 2 shutouts along the way.
Scott Chadwick’s Marvin Ridge team is having the best season in their young school’s history. With a tough strength of schedule and their only loss to 4A Porter Ridge, the Mavericks come into this week’s matchup battle tested and looking to advance to the sectional round of the playoffs for the first time. Offensively, the Mavericks score 20 points a game in their spread offense. The defense only gives up 17 a game, and the Mavericks have outscored their last three opponents by an average of 25 points.
Charlotte Catholic took down Hickory Ridge 42-14 last week while Marvin Ridge topped Berry Academy 31-12.
It looks to be a good game Friday night in Charlotte. Follow us on Twitter for game updates, @NCGridiron or @NCGridironNews or you can follow our live scoreboard for updates from around the state.

WAXHAW – If there’s one thing that playoff football does, it’s bringing the best out of teams. Tonight’s game at Marvin Ridge was an clear example of this principle. The Mavericks were able to take down the visiting Berry Cardinals with a total effort on offense and defense. By the end of the night, the scoreboard read 31-12 in favor of the home team and the Mavericks were on their way to the second round of the 3AA Midwest playoffs.
The second quarter was a match of defensive stands by both teams. Every time one team would find a way to get a first down, the other would come back with a big defensive stop. Trying to find some momentum, each team decided to go for it on fourth down in the second quarter but both were stopped. The turning point in the second quarter was when the Mavericks’ Cameron Pittman made a big interception late in the half and returned it into Berry territory. A mix of runs and passes got Marvin Ridge inside the 10 with 0.2 seconds left, and Tyler Cochran kicked a field goal giving the Mavericks a 10-6 halftime lead.
The fourth quarter began with a 9 yard touchdown run by Derek Smith, giving Marvin Ridge a 24-6 lead. Berry tried to get back in the game with a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, but a long pass from Chadwick to a wide open Taylor Capoziello for 73 yards and a score put the final nail in the coffin.
Asked about his team’s effort in the first round of the playoffs, Marvin Ridge head coach Scott Chadwick, “I’ve never been so proud of a group of guys in all my years of coaching. They’ve defied every bit of expectation that has been placed on them this year. Others said this would be a rebuilding year has been our best season in our school’s history.
On Joey Sanguine, who stepped in after the starting running back was ruled out with a concussion and ran for 172 yards on 20 carries: “You can’t say enough about him…I thought he came in and ran the ball extremely hard. We’re not really known for our running game, but we had some great line play tonight and controlled the line of scrimmage.”
Next week, Marvin Ridge travels to Charlotte Catholic for second round playoff action in the 3AA Midwest.

Marvin Ridge won the toss and chose to defer. After a touchback, Berry took over at their own 20 and on the third play of the drive, Germone Hopper found a seam up the middle and scooted 76 yards down the field for a quick Cardinal touchdown. The PAT was no good and score stood at 6-0.
The Mavericks decided to answer back on their next drive, moving the ball into Berry territory before running back Joey Sanguine ran off tackle into open space for 45 yards and found the end zone, tying the game. The PAT was good, and the Mavericks held a 1 point lead throughout the rest of the fourth quarter.

Marvin Ridge took the second half kickoff and went on a time consuming 9 minute drive, covering 80 yards and resulting in a 5 yard touchdown run by quarterback Tyler Chadwick. Only a minute later, another interception by Cameron Pittman gave the ball back to Marvin Ridge. Overall, the Mavericks held the ball for 11 of the 12 minutes in the third quarter.

It’s playoff time in North Carolina. Teams who can put together the complete effort will move on, while other teams will be getting ready for basketball season. The brackets are set, the teams and fans are excited, and it’s time to win or go home. Be sure to go out and support your local team this Friday night.
Carolina Gridiron Game of the Week
This week’s matchup is from the most brutal of all of the pods, the 3AA Midwest. Four of the top five seeds in the western region are located in the Midwest. The top four teams in the Midwest went a combined 39-2 during the regular season. The games in the Midwest are sure to be some great matchups between great teams. This week’s game is just that. The Carolina Gridiron Game of the Week for Week 12 features the 7-3 Berry Academy Cardinals traveling to Waxhaw to take on the 9-1 Marvin Ridge Mavericks.
Marvin Ridge is only it its fifth year of existence, but they have made the playoffs every season. Coach Scott Chadwick’s Mavericks have averaged 9 wins a season over the last three years. This year’s Mavericks team was not expected to have as much success, having to replace 18 starters from last year’s playoff team. But, the Mavericks have worked together as a team on a mission this year. The Mavericks have “exceeded expectations this year…both individually and as a team” according to Coach Chadwick.

The Carolina Gridiron Game of the Week for Week 12 features the 7-3 Berry Academy Cardinals traveling to Waxhaw to take on the 9-1 Marvin Ridge Mavericks.
Berry Academy, in its first year in 3A ball, is loaded with athletes on both sides of the ball. One of those athletes is Germone Hopper, a two-way threat who is headed to Clemson next year. He has definitely showed the Tigers what they can look forward to this year, returning 2 punts and 3 kickoffs for touchdowns this year. Defensively, the Cardinals, led by FBS recruit Nick Dawson, only gave up 16.5 points a game in MEGA 7 3A/4A conference action.
Coach Andrew Howard’s Berry offense is averaging 32 points a game on offense in a schedule that has featured top teams like Mallard Creek and Charlotte Catholic. While this is Berry’s first year playing 3A ball, the Cardinals are no stranger to playoff football, making it to the second round last year before losing to eventual 2AA state champion Salisbury.

The Maverick offense is led by senior quarterback Tyler Chadwick and is averaging 30 points a game. Chadwick has led the Maverick passing attack this season, completing 71% of his passes over the last five weeks. Lineman Adam Smits anchors a defense that has only given up 17 points a game. His 13 tackles for loss and 10 sacks this season make his a “huge playmaker” according to Coach Chadwick. The secondary is led by Luke Stennitt, who is “near the top of the team stats in interceptions, tackles for loss, and sacks.”
While both of these schools could hold their own in an academic matchup (Berry is a top magnet school in Charlotte who focuses on technology; Marvin Ridge is the number one comprehensive public high school in North Carolina), it looks to be a great football game Friday night in Waxhaw.

The lights shined bright and the air was crisp as the Porter Ridge Pirates took on the Marvin Ridge Mavericks in a matchup of 5-0 teams. Both teams sought to use this week’s game as a springboard to the conference lead. But, only one team emerged victorious, and tonight it was the Pirates as they defeated the Mavericks 27-3 in Southern Carolina 3A/4A action.
Porter Ridge faces off against Parkwood next week while Marvin Ridge hosts Sun Valley in conference action.
The Pirates won the toss, elected to receive, and then proceeded to move the ball down the field against the Maverick defense. But, Porter Ridge was unable to capitalize on this ball movement as they fumbled the ball away in the red zone.
Marvin Ridge took over deep in their own territory and drove down the field, resulting in Tyler Cochran kicking a 41 yard field goal with under a minute left in the first quarter. At the end of the first period, the score stood at 3-0 in favor of the visitors.
But, the Porter Ridge offense is one that can strike at any time as they have used big plays to get themselves in control of games all season long. And the Pirates lived up to this in this week’s game as well. After a drive that resulted in a 3 yard touchdown run by Chris Duffy, the Pirates came back on their next drive with a 55 yard touchdown run by Najee Davis.
Marvin Ridge looked to take advantage of a Porter Ridge mistake late in the first half, falling on a muffed punt, but an official blew his whistle early, resulting in a replay of the down. At halftime, the scoreboard read 14-3 on favor of the Pirates.
Marvin Ridge received the second half kickoff, but was unable to move the ball effectively. After receiving the punt, Porter Ridge quarterback Lee McNeill was intercepted by Maverick defensive back Luke Stennitt giving the Mavericks possession again. But, it was a short lived possession as the Pirates were able to intercept Maverick quarterback Tyler Chadwick a few minutes later.
The Pirates then went back to the air, with the key play being a 40 yard reception by Jordan Oakley to get down to the Marvin Ridge 3 yard line. The Pirates went back to Najee Davis again from the Wildcat formation, resulting in a score and extending the Porter Ridge lead to 21-3 in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter played much like the third quarter, with Marvin Ridge fighting for a score and Porter Ridge doing just enough to stop them. The Mavericks drove down inside the 5 yard line, but were unable to convert on a 4th and goal, giving the ball back to Porter Ridge. The Pirates added another score with under three minutes left on a run by Chris Duffy making the final score 27-3.
After the game, Porter Ridge coach Blair Hardin spoke about his team’s effort. “It was a great environment tonight… a good hard nosed football game.” When asked about what made the Pirate offense move against Marvin Ridge, Hardin stated “we tried to establish things up front. We work all week on execution and play as fast as we can. I’m real pleased with our kids tonight. It’s only going to get tougher from here.”
On his team’s performance, Mavericks coach Scott Chadwick: “We need to take advantage of opportunities and not give up the big play. We couldn’t finish drives or get any breaks, but we’ll fight another day. If there’s one thing about this conference, you’ve got to put the week behind you and move on.”

It’s week 7 in the high school football season and most schools are fighting it out in their conference for future playoff berths. Coaches are looking for leadership to emerge, and players are beginning to play each game with more intensity. We’re getting to the point now where some rivalry games are beginning to be played. Be sure to go out and support your local team this Friday night.
The Mavericks, coached by Scott Chadwick, are even stingier on defense than their counterparts, allowing only an average of 14.8 points per game. For a team that lost 18 starters from last season, Marvin Ridge has also played with a chip on their shoulders and has started 5-0 for the third season in a row. Strong line play and experience at the skill positions, led by quarterback Tyler Chadwick, has fueled this fast start.
Carolina Gridiron Game of the Week for Week 7
Union County has been a hotbed for high school football the past few years. Teams from Union County have made it to all levels of the state playoffs in recent seasons and this season is shaping up to be more of the same. The Carolina Gridiron Game of the Week has the Marvin Ridge Mavericks facing off against the Porter Ridge Pirates.
Porter Ridge, coached by Blair Hardin, is 5-0 and is averaging 45.8 points a game while only giving up 16. Led by quarterback Lee McNeill, the Pirates are able to move the ball with ease against opponents. A statement game had to be the 41-13 beating of A.L. Brown in week 4 which showed other teams in the state that the Pirates were for real and last year’s state semifinalist team was no fluke.
Porter Ridge is ranked #13 in the Carolina Gridiron 4A statewide FAIR rankings. Here is a clip from an interview with head coach Blair Hardin.
