App State Clinches Division Title, Will Host Sun Belt Conference Championship

6:17 PM
BOONE – With a chance to clinch the Sun Belt East Division and host the inaugural Sun Belt Conference championship game, Appalachian State and Troy came into Saturday's gridiron clash with everything to gain. In a game that featured the two top defenses in the Sun Belt Conference, it was Appalachian State who came away victorious after a 21-10 win and the Mountaineers will host either Arkansas State, UL-Monroe, or Louisiana next week.

Turnovers determined the winner of the game as App State was able to score fourteen of its twenty-one points off of four Troy turnovers. Zac Thomas found Corey Sutton for two of App State's touchdowns. Thomas scored the other touchdown on a quarterback keeper. Sutton led ASU's receivers with five grabs for seventy-two yards.

Although Appalachian State scored two of their three touchdowns through the air, it was the ground game that kept the Mountaineers in the game and the Troy offense on the sideline. Led by Darrynton Evans, who recorded his fifth 100-yard game in Sun Belt competition, App State rushed forty-five times for 201 yards.

The App State defense held Troy to 232 total yards, well under the four-hundred the Trojans had been averaging so far this season and the second fewest Troy amassed in a game during the 2018 season. The Mountaineer defense was able to hold potent Troy running back in BJ Smith to only fifty-three yards and forced the Trojans to try and win through the air, a game plan that greatly favored the home team.

Leading the App State defense was former Thomasville Bulldog Akeem Davis-Gaither who finished the game with fourteen tackles (four solo) and a pass breakup. Clifton Duck also added an interception, the twelfth of his career and the twelfth of the season for the famed "Legion of Boone" defensive backfield.

Appalachian State will take on either Louisiana, U-Monroe, or Arkansas State next week. Game time is scheduled for noon.

South Atlantic Foes Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate Meet in Second Round of D2 Championship

9:36 AM

After extending its winning streak to 11 straight with a 43-21 win over Florida Tech in the opening round of the 2018 Division II NCAA Playoffs, the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears advance to host and take on Wingate in the Second Round.

Wingate made it to the second round after scoring a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns last Saturday afternoon and rallying for a 41-31 win over 10th-ranked West Georgia

The Bulldogs and Bears squared off back on September 22. Lenoir-Rhyne appeared to have that game in hand, leading 31-7 halfway into the third quarter. But redshirt freshman quarterback Shaw Crocker found senior wideout J.T. Stokes for two big touchdowns to close out the third quarter with 17 unanswered points. Their comeback fell a touchdown short, and one would imagine that Wingate was hoping for a chance to avenge that loss.

Quick Notes
  • Lenoir-Rhyne leads the all-time series 20-13
  • Wingate is 6-10 against the Bears in Hickory
  • The Bulldogs have won the last two meetings at Lenoir-Rhyne
  • The Bears won the first 11 meetings from 1986-1998 and 14 of the first 16 overall
  • Wingate won six straight from 2005-2010
  • Lenoir-Rhyne won the next four from 2011-2014, followed by Wingate's three-game win streak that was snapped this year
  • Biggest win for Lenoir-Rhyne was a 49-7 victory in Monroe in 1992
  • Wingate's biggest margin of victory came in 2016, a 49-6 home win
  • Wingate's 50-49 win in 2009 saw the 'Dogs overcome a 49-32 deficit the final 11 minutes
  • Wingate won 24-14 in 2015 to snap Lenoir-Rhyne's 22-game SAC winning streak
  • Wingate won 22-14 at Lenoir-Rhyne last season
  • The Bears raced out to a 31-7 lead at Wingate this year, then held on for a 31-24 victory

In-State Rivalry Renewed as NC State Visits UNC

9:21 AM

North Carolina concludes its 2018 campaign Saturday when the Tar Heels host long-time Triangle rival NC State at 12:20 p.m. at Kenan Stadium. UNC is 2-8 on the year after a 49-26 win over Western Carolina on Saturday. Saturday will mark the fourth straight year in which the UNC-NC State game is played on the final weekend of the regular season.

Saturday’s game at Chapel Hill will mark the 108th meeting in the series between the Wolfpack and the Tar Heels. The rivalry, which began in 1894, is one of the oldest among ACC teams and the fourth-most played series in the ACC.

Although the Tar Heels hold a 66-35-6 overall lead in the history of the series, the Wolfpack holds the advantage since the turn of the century. Since the year 2000, NC State has won 11 of the 18 games (including 8 of the last 11). Under Dave Doeren, the Wolfpack is 3-2 against the Heels, but 2-0 at Kenan Stadium.

This has been a back-and-forth rivalry in recent seasons, with the road team capturing four of the last five meetings. Carolina has won three of six games under Larry Fedora - the 2012 contest in Chapel Hill that was decided by Giovani Bernard's late punt return touchdown and a pair of impressive victories in Raleigh.

The team that has held the rushing advantage has won 23 of the last 26 meetings. The lone exceptions came in 2004 when North Carolina won 30-24, but was outgained on the ground, 304-164; in 2009 when North Carolina had 159 rushing yards to NC State's 76 in a 28-27 Wolfpack victory; and in 2013 when NC State held a 212-152 advantage in rushing but the Tar Heels were 27-19 winners. Last season, the Wolfpack outrushed the Tar Heels 292-83.

Wake Forest Seeks Bowl Eligibility Against Duke

9:15 AM

Duke closes out the regular season by hosting Wake Forest on Saturday, November 24. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.

Duke will celebrate Senior Day and 18 student-athletes will be recognized prior to kickoff: C Clark Bulleit, RB Griffin Carter, S Brandon Feamster, LB Kevin Gehsmann, OG/C Zach Harmon, OT Christian Harris, S Jordan Hayes, TE Daniel Helm, LB Ben Humphreys, TE Davis Koppenhaver, WR Trevon Lee, WR Johnathan Lloyd, S Jeremy McDuffie, DE Twazanga Mugala, RB Nicodem Pierre, WR T.J. Rahming, WR Chris Taylor and K Collin Wareham.

Saturday’s game will mark the 99th on the gridiron between the two schools, with Duke holding a 58- 38-2 series advantage. The series began in 1889 with a 32-0 Wake Forest win. Wake Forest and Duke have met in every season since 1967 and every year since 1921 with the exception of 1943 and 1966. Duke enjoyed winning streaks of 11 (1931-41) and 12 (1952-63) games while the Demon Deacons posted 12 straight victories from 2000-11. Duke has won five of the last six affairs including last year’s 31-23 triumph in Winston-Salem.

The win over North Carolina two weeks ago marked Duke’s seventh victory of the year and secured a winning season -- the program’s fifth in the last six years for the most successful stretch since five winning seasons in six years between 1960-65

Wake Forest will be seeking bowl-eligibility for a third straight year when the Demon Deacons visit Duke. It would mark just the second time in program history that the Deacs qualified for bowl games in three consecutive seasons.

Wake Forest is 3-1 on the road this season and 2-1 in road ACC games. The last time Wake Forest won three ACC road games in a season was in 2006 when the Demon Deacons went 4-0 in ACC road games en route to winning the ACC Championship. The last time Wake Forest won four or more overall road games in a season was in 2006 when the Deacons posted a 6-0 record. In 2006, the Deacons won ACC road games at NC State, North Carolina, Florida State and Maryland. Wake Forest added non-conference road wins at UConn and Ole Miss.

The Demon Deacons are 21-27 all-time in games played at Duke but have won seven of the last eight played at Wallace Wade Stadium. If the Deacons defeat Duke, bowl announcements will be made on or about Sunday, December 2.

Charlotte Eliminated From Bowl Contention on Senior Day

5:23 PM
CHARLOTTE – In a game that featured over a thousand total offensive yards, it was the FIU Panthers who ultimately came out on top at Charlotte's Richardson Stadium in a 42-35 Conference USA Eastern Division showdown.

For the 49ers, it was a career day for running back Benny LeMay who finished with thirty carries for 159 yards and a program record-tying four touchdowns. Senior Hasaan Klugh, who got the start at quarterback on Senior Day and made the most of his last opportunity to play in front of the home crowd, passed for 253 yards and a score while rushing for forty-eight yards as well.

Freshman wide receiver Victor Tucker caught four passes for 115 yards including a diving catch at the one-yard line that set up a 49ers score. Senior Juwan Foggie led the Charlotte defense, who did not allow a 100-yard rusher for the tenth time this season, with nine tackles.

FIU's James Morgan found success through the air, throwing for 268 yards and two scores. Running back Napoleon Maxwell score two touchdowns as well, including one on a 52-yard run.

With the loss, Charlotte (4-7, 3-4) was eliminated from bowl contention for the 2018 season and will look instead to next week's game at Florida Atlantic for a chance to go into the offseason with some momentum.

Campbell Picks Up First Big South Win at Presbyterian

8:15 PM
CLINTON, S.C. – Daniel Smith ran for three first-half scores, helping Campbell secure its first Big South Conference football win, downing Presbyterian on the road 34-6 Saturday at Bailey Memorial Stadium.

Campbell (6-4, 1-3 Big South) notched back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in its modern history (since 2008) with the victory. In the program’s 11th season and first as a Big South member, the Camels earned their first win in the league, spending the program's first 10 seasons in the Pioneer Football League (2008-17).

PC (2-7, 0-5 Big South) was limited to just 12 passing yards in the loss, a Campbell single-game record, and only 176 yards of total offense. The Blue Hose completed 4-of-20 passes with an interception through the air, while running for 164 yards and a touchdown.

Campbell, meanwhile, piled up 446 total yards, including 337 rushing, led by Smith’s 129 on 11 tries. The redshirt sophomore posted touchdown runs of four, 51 and 45 yards, also completing 14-of-22 passes for 109 yards and another TD.

Smith found the end zone on Campbell’s first two possessions, including a four-yard dive to the pylon to cap a seven-play march, and a 51-yard sprint to make it 13-0 after a blocked extra point.
Jordan Morgan put PC on the board with a five-yard keeper, but Aaron Blockmon quieted the rally, returning the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for the touchdown. The kick return TD was the second of Blockmon's career and the redshirt senior’s first since his 2015 freshman season. The score tied Blockmon with Jonathon Rogers for the most kick return TDs in CU history.

Smith added another 45-yard touchdown run before the break, giving Campbell a 27-6 halftime lead.
Smith’s third quarter 36-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Snead on a fourth-and-six gave the game its final margin.

Rocky Reid posted 76 yards rushing on 13 carries, while Darius Barnes added 72 yards on 12 tries. Snead tallied 55 yards receiving with a TD on five catches for the Camels.

Deontae Henderson posted eight tackles, including three stops for loss to lead the Campbell defense, while Levi Wiggins totaled seven tackles. Damien Dozier also gather five tackles with two TFLs, and Aaron Covington notched an interception in the road win.

Morgan paced PC with 78 yards rushing and a TD on 17 attempts, completing 3-of-11 passes for nine yards, while Zola Davis added 49 yards rushing. Colby Campbell notched a game-high 14 tackles for the Blue Hose, also forcing one of four Campbell fumbles. Trent Carrington recovered two fumbles, adding eight tackles for PC.

Campbell will close out the season at home on November 17, hosting Charleston Southern.

Strong Third Quarter Helps Marshall Take Down Charlotte

6:19 PM

Huntington, WV – Marshall (6-3; C-USA: 4-2) put up 17 third-quarter points to pull away from Charlotte (4-6; C-USA: 3-3) for a 30-13 Conference USA East Division victory, Saturday at Edwards Stadium.

The two teams battled to a 13-10 halftime score but Marshall put up 167 yards of total offense and scored on three straight drives in the decisive quarter.

"The third quarter was the tell in this game," said 49ers head coach Brad Lambert. "We couldn't get off the field defensively. They were a little bit better on third down than we were. We couldn't get anything going offensively."

Sr. S Ed Rolle forced a fumble that was recovered by defensive tackle Timmy Horne on the first play of the second half to give Charlotte the ball at the Marshall 20. Cruz's 35-yard field goal tied the score, 13-13 with 13:48 left to play. Marshall, however, scored 17 straight points after that to open up a 30-13 lead heading into the final quarter.

After Cruz's field goal tied the score to start the second half, Marshall converted three third downs on it's next drive to move 75 yards for the go-ahead score. Brendan Knox crashed in from four yards out to put Marshall ahead 20-13. After a three-and-out by the 49ers ended with a sack deep in Charlotte territory, Marshall took over at the 49ers' 43.  Knox had six carries for 30 yards to set up Justin Rohrwasser's 23-yard field goal.  Another three-and-out gave Marshall the ball at midfield, and the Herd drove 50 yards on five plays to score on Isaiah Green's 10-yard TD pass to Obi Obialo.

Knox finished with 116 yards rushing – the first opponent to rush for over 100 yards against the 49ers, this season.

"They ran the ball pretty good on us," Lambert added.  "Their offensive line played well. We couldn't get the field position in the third quarter.  We just couldn't get anything going in the second half."

Charlotte took the game's opening drive 75 yards and scored on QB Evan Shirreffs one-yard keeper to take a 7-0 lead.  The 12-play drive ate up 6:18 of the first quarter and included 11 running plays after a 12-yard pass to Rico Arnold started the drive.  Benny LeMay had six carries for 41 yards, including a 19-yard rush into the red zone as the 49ers broke a string of seven quarters without a touchdown.

Marshall answered with a 59-yard drive that stalled at the 49ers six-yard line when Nafees Lyon broke up Green's pass to wideout Tyre Brady in the endzone.  The Herd settled for a 23-yard field goal to make it 7-3.

On Charlotte's next drive, the Herd blocked the 49ers punt and recovered on the 49ers' one-yard line. Anthony Anderson scored from one-yard out for the first rushing TD allowed by the 49ers in four games to give Marshall a 10-7 lead.

Marshall kicked a 33-yard field goal with 4:21 left in the half and the 49ers followed with their own 11-play; 47-yard drive to set up Jonathan Cruz's 40-yard field goal as the clock expired. With the boot, Cruz extended his school-record to seven field goals made from 40 or more yards.

"We gave up a touchdown, basically on our punt team again," Lambert noted. "Defensively we did some good things. We've got to tighten up on the run in the third quarter.  They hit some third downs. We've got to go back and look at third down make sure we're putting our guys in the right position to get off the field."

Charlotte enjoyed a 171-130 advantage on total offense, but the Thundering Herd led 13-10 at the break, thanks in part to the one-yard scoring drive after the blocked punt.

Charlotte had 103 yards rushing in the first half, led by LeMay's 45 and freshman Ishod Finger's 33 rushing yards.  Shirreffs was 6-of-12 for 68 yards. Green finished the half 9-of-16 for Marshall for 104 yards. Brady led the Herd with five catches for 84 yards.

LeMay finished with 70 yards rushing and Finger added a career-high 34. Shirreffs was 8-of-18 for 74 yards. R-Fr. Rico Arnold had four catches for 49 yards, all  in the first half.  Marshall put up 325 yards of total offense, including 195 in the second half.  Charlotte, one of three teams in the fBS that has npot allowed an opponent to rush for over 150 yards, gave up a season-high 147 to the Herd.  Green connected on 15-of-25 passes for 178 yards and a TD.  Brady had six catches for 95 yards for the Herd.

Lyon, Ben DeLuca and Juwan Foggie led the 49ers with 10 tackles, apiece.

"I told the guys, the mission we set out on, last February is still in front of us," Lambert said. "We know what we've got to do. We've got to go back, start preparing tomorrow and go win a game on Saturday."

The 49ers return to Charlotte for the 49ers final home game of  season, Nov. 17 vs. FIU.  Game time will be 2 p.m.

49ers Fall Short in Knoxville

8:01 PM

The Charlotte 49ers (4-5) battled the SEC's Tennessee Volunteers (4-5), Saturday, in front of a crowd of 86,753, the largest crowd to see a 49ers' football game, but dropped a 14-3 decision in non-conference play on the road.

"You come on the road in a tough environment and play against a good team and do some good things but we don't play the game to come close," said 49ers head coach Brad Lambert.  "I told the guys in the locker room -- you play to come in here and win. There were some situations in there that we could have had an opportunity to win the game and that's what you want to do."

Charlotte's defense held Tennessee to 192 yards of total offense, including 20 in the running game, but an early punt return for a TD and a first-quarter touchdown pass gave the Vols all the scoring they would need.

Charlotte held Tennessee scoreless for the final three quarters, but could not break through in the end zone. This is the first time this season that Charlotte has held an opponent scoreless in the second half. Freshman kicker Jonathan Cruz's 20-yard field goal late in the first half was the 49ers scoring.

Charlotte put up 244 yards of total offense. Junior back Benny LeMay had 81 yards rushing and Evan Shirreffs was 13-of-25 for 152 yards, but Charlotte, which faced difficult field position all day, was 5-of-15 on third down.

After an illegal formation forced a rekick of a punt inside the Tennessee 10, the Vols Marquez Callaway broke off an 82-yard return to give the Vols a 7-0 lead with 7:42 remaining in the first quarter.

As the first quarter came to a close, UT QB Jarrett Guarantano threw a 16-yard pass to Josh Palmer to wrap up a six-play, 63-yard drive and put the Vols ahead, 14-0.

The 49ers drove 87 yards in the final six minutes of the half, but a third and goal pass from the three went high and Charlotte settled for Cruz's 20-yard field goal to make it 14-3 at the half.

Statistically, Charlotte had 157 yards of total offense compared with 93 from the home-standing Vols in the first half. Charlotte, which ranks in the top 20 in the FBS in rushing defense, held Tennessee to no rushing yards in the first half.  The Vols, of course, had the punt return for a TD and 93 yards passing.

R-jr. defensive end Alex Highsmith had 7 tackles, including 4.0 TFL and 1.5 sacks. Jr. safety Ben DeLuca led the 49ers with nine tackles.

"Ultimately we didn't get the win, that's all that matters," said Highsmith afterward. "Coach (Glenn) Spencer's package puts us in a great position upfront to stop the run. I think it starts with how we prepare.  Practice is where it's made at.  We just came out and want to use our hands and attack them and play violently with them.

Tennessee is the fourth opponent to be held below 50 yards rushing by the 49ers this season.  Charlotte has held three of its last four opponents under 50 yards rushing.

Guarantano completed 16-of-21 passes for 172 yards and one TD.  Palmer, who caught the first quarter TD pass, had four catches with 71 yards.

Charlotte travels to Marshall, next week, for a Conference USA matchup.

"We're back in the league (next week), so that's got to be our focus tomorrow," Lambert added.

UNC Comeback Bid Falls Short, Tar Heels Eliminated From Bowl Contention

3:32 PM
CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina Tar Heels were 1-6 going into Saturday's Homecoming game against Coastal division rival Georgia Tech. Rallying from eighteen points down in the third quarter to tie the game in the final quarter, turnovers and an inability to slow down the vaunted Yellow Jacket triple option offense ultimately proved too much for the Tar Heels as they fell 38-28 on a chilly afternoon at Kenan Stadium.

UNC Fell to Georgia Tech, 38-28, on Saturday

Things looked bright for the Tar Heels when the UNC defense took the field for the first time. Getting into the backfield, Malik Carney was able to strip the Georgia Tech ball carrier, pick up the ball and race twenty yards to the end zone, giving the Tar Heels an early 7-0 lead.

That good feeling wouldn't last long, though, as the Yellow Jacket offense went to work on the next drive, going seventy-five yards in five plays resulting in an eleven-yard Nathan Cottrell scoring run. This was the first of four rushing touchdowns on the day for Georgia Tech, who rumbled for 461 yards on the ground in the game.

Georgia Tech added two more scores in the second quarter, including a rare eighty-six-yard touchdown pass, to take a commanding 21-7 lead. Only a twenty-three-yard Freeman Jones field goal kept the Tar Heels offense from a scoreless first half.

The Yellow Jackets opened up the second half much like they played the first half. Starting on their own 25, the visitors marched seventy-five yards down the field in twelve plays and it looked bleak for the Tar Heels as Clinton Lynch dove towards the pylon, securing an eighteen-point lead.

North Carolina did not give up, though, and finally ground their groove offensively. Pinned deep after the kickoff, UNC moved quickly down the field and freshman Jace Ruder threw his first career touchdown pass to former Hough standout Carl Tucker to make it 28-17. The Tar Heel defense created the next opportunity for UNC, recovering a fumble and leading to another Jones field goal.

When the final quarter began, the visitors' lead had been cut to eight and they were facing a tough fourth down at midfield. Coach Paul Johnson rolled the dice and went for it, but the UNC defense stiffened up and stopped the Yellow Jackets for a loss. Five plays later, Antonio Williams hit pay dirt and after Anthony Ratliff-Williams reeled in the two-point conversion, it was knotted at 28.

When it looked like UNC was going to be able to take their first lead of the game, Georgia Tech's Tariq Carpenter picked off a pass near midfield, taking away the momentum the Tar Heels had built throughout their comeback. Nine plays and forty-one yards later, backup Yellow Jacket quarterback Tobias Oliver scored on a one-yard keeper. Another interception on the subsequent possession led to a short field goal which ultimately sealed the deal.

Next Week
UNC (1-7, 1-5) travels to Duke in an annual renewal of a longstanding Tobacco Road rivalry while Georgia Tech (5-4, 3-3) hosts Miami at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
