Duke Secures Birmingham Bowl Victory Over Troy with Stout Defense and Clutch Kicking

5:30 PM

BIRMINGHAM, AL – In a hard-fought battle at Protective Stadium, the Duke Blue Devils emerged victorious against the Troy Trojans, claiming a 17-10 win in the Birmingham Bowl on December 23, 2023. The game showcased a mix of defensive prowess, offensive resilience, and standout special teams performances.

Early Domination and Defensive Brilliance

Duke wasted no time asserting control, with graduate running back Jaylen Coleman punching in a one-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter. The Blue Devils set the tone early, ultimately holding Troy to a meager three points until late in the fourth quarter.

The defensive unit proved to be the backbone of Duke's success. Sophomore cornerback Chandler Rivers shone with three critical pass breakups, etching his name into the bowl record books. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Tre Freeman led the team with nine tackles, capping off a season where he surpassed the 100-tackle mark.

A standout moment came from senior defensive tackle Aeneas Peebles, who notched four tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, and 1.0 sack, disrupting Troy's offensive rhythm. The Blue Devils collectively recorded 10 pass breakups, marking a historic high for a bowl game in the program's history.

Offensive Contributions and Milestones

Graduate running back Jaylen Coleman, in his final appearance, contributed significantly with a crucial touchdown. Freshman quarterback Grayson Loftis showcased composure, going 19-of-29 for 183 yards despite facing a resilient Troy defense.

Senior wide receiver Jalon Calhoun etched his name alongside Duke great T.J. Rahming, tying for third all-time in program history with 253 career catches. Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Sahmir Hagans played a pivotal role, hauling in five receptions for 55 yards.

Special Teams Excellence

Sophomore kicker Todd Pelino delivered a clutch performance, converting three field goals (34-, 37-, and 45-yards), tying a Duke bowl record. His precision proved crucial in securing the win, matching the tenacity displayed by the defense throughout the game.

Graduate student punter Porter Wilson showcased his punting prowess, registering four punts for 188 yards, concluding the season with the best single-season punting average in program history (46.64).

Sealing the Victory

The game's defining moment came in the fourth quarter when graduate safety Jeremiah Lewis secured the win with his fifth career interception, putting an end to Troy's hopes of a comeback.

Duke's triumph not only marked its fifth consecutive bowl victory but also snapped Troy's 10-game winning streak and halted its five-game bowl winning streak. The Blue Devils closed the season with an 8-8 all-time bowl record, leaving an indelible mark on the Birmingham Bowl and capping off a memorable year for Duke football.

App State Falls to Troy in Sun Belt Title Game

9:17 PM

TROY, AL – In a rain-soaked showdown at Veterans Memorial in Troy, Alabama, the first three quarters of the Sun Belt conference championship game was a gritty battle between the visiting App State Mountaineers and the Troy Trojans. Despite the inclement weather, a crowd of 20,183 ardent fans braved the elements to cheer on their teams, their roars echoing through the stadium. The atmosphere was electric, the stakes high, and the players on both sides gave it their all on the field, but it was the Trojans who rattled off twenty-eight points in the final quarter to win 49-23.

How it Happened

After a scoreless first quarter, both offenses finally found their rhythm. Troy’s junior running back Kimani Vidal, the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year, rushed for two touchdowns, one for 7 yards and another for 36 yards, giving the West Division champions a 14-0 lead. The Mountaineers responded with a quick drive and one-yard touchdown rush by Kanye Roberts, narrowing the gap to 14-7.

In the third quarter, Kanye Roberts scored another rushing touchdown for the Mountaineers, tying the game at 14-all. The Trojans responded with a fifty-one-yard touchdown pass from Gunnar Watson to Chris Lewis. The Mountaineers added a 41-yard field goal by Michael Hughes, making the score 21-17 in favor of the Trojans. This was the closest the Mountaineers would be the rest of the night.

In the fourth quarter, the Trojans extended their lead with a 2-yard touchdown rush by Kimani Vidal and a 10-yard scoop and by Don Callis. The Mountaineers fought back with a 6-yard touchdown rush by Joey Aguilar, but the PAT rush failed. The Trojans sealed their victory with two more rushing touchdowns by Kimani Vidal, one for 6 yards and another for 49 yards, making the final score 49-23 in favor of the Trojans.

App State Wins Thriller in Boone With Last-Second Hail Mary

11:13 AM

BOONE — An unforgettable day at App State began with ESPN College GameDay's first visit to Boone. It then delivered a second unbelievable, historic ending at The Rock.

Call it Miracle on the Mountain: Part 2.

Chase Brice's 53-yard, Hail Mary touchdown pass to Christan Horn — with help from 6-foot-4 teammate Dalton Stroman's crowded tip at the 5-yard line and Kaedin Robinson's sealing block after Horn made a circling catch of the tip at the 8 — gave App State a thrilling 32-28 win against Troy in their Sun Belt Conference opener Saturday.

Thrilling. Historic. Unbelievable. Unforgettable.

What other adjectives are fit to describe what all transpired Saturday in the High Country.

Twenty years after App State won the original "Miracle on the Mountain" game by returning an intercepted two-point conversion pass for a go-ahead two points with seven seconds left in a 16-15 home win against Furman, App State (2-1) pulled off a shocker with no time remaining on the clock and, by the end of the celebration, no shortage of stunned reactions.

Just like country music star Luke Combs and beloved GameDay personality Lee Corso predicted, with Corso wearing Yosef headgear to close GameDay's appearance in a packed Sanford Mall in the center of campus nearly seven hours earlier, App State did indeed beat Troy.

No one expected it to happen like that.

Brice's incompletion on a fourth-and-goal pass from the 3 gave Troy (1-2) possession with 1:13 left and a 28-24 lead. The Trojans took a fourth-down safety on purpose, leaving App State with just 20 seconds to field a free kick and score. Three straight incompletions from the App State 47 set up one final heave with two seconds remaining, and it took three receivers to create one successful, viral connection between Brice and Horn.

The actual name of the play? "Big Ben" — similar to a 63-yard Hail Mary that Florida used to beat Tennessee in 2017, when current App State offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay was the Gators' director of player development.

A crowd of 34,406 fans witnessed more history, although some of those returned to the stadium after leaving with App State's chances of a victory looking bleak. Immediate fireworks above the north end zone facility signaled to many that something amazing had just transpired nearby.

It was the fourth-largest crowd in Kidd Brewer Stadium history and the biggest crowd for a non-ACC opponent.

Next Week
App State (2-1, 1-0) hosts James Madison next week in the annual "Black Saturday" game while Troy hosts Marshall (1-2, 0-1).

Campbell Falls to Troy, 43-14, in 2019 Opener

10:47 PM
TROY, AL – Troy registered 527 total yards to top visiting Campbell 43-14 in the 2019 opener for both teams Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Troy (1-0), a member of the FBS Sun Belt Conference, saw three Trojans pass the century mark on the night, handing Campbell (0-1) its first season-opening defeat since 2014.

Two Trojans hit the 100 receiving yards mark, with Reggie Todd making three catches for 108 yards and a touchdown, while Kaylon Geiger hauled in a game-high five catches for 108 yards. B.J. Smith also ran for 109 yards on 10 carries, also adding a TD.

Kaleb Barker connected on 18-of-29 passes for 282 yards with two touchdowns, completing passes to eight different receivers.

Caleb Snead paced Campbell with 54 yards on three catches, with two going for touchdowns, with quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams, who became the Camels’ first true freshman to start a season opener at quarterback, connecting on 7-of-13 passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Justice Galloway-Velazquez tallied a career-high 10 tackles with 1.5 sacks, while Tywun Rivens tacked on eight stops.

Carlton Martial led Troy with 13 tackles and 2.0 stops for loss, while five Trojans combined for five sacks.

The Trojans took a 20-7 lead into the halftime break, closing the weather-delayed first half with a missed 47-yard field goal that fell short and wide right.

The game featured a 74-minute delay due to lightning in the area between the first and second quarters, with Troy leading 17-7.

The Trojans led 10-0 before Campbell reached the end zone, with Hajj-Malik Williams hitting Caleb Snead over the middle for a 16-yard score, the first career TD pass for the CU freshman. The touchdown was set up by a Troy fumble on a punt return, stripped by Monchovia Gaffney and covered by Julian Hill.

Williams and Snead connected again with 8:35 to go in the fourth quarter, a 30-yard heave that cut the Troy lead to 36-14. BK Billingsley added the game’s final score for the Trojans with 6:01 to play with a 38-yard TD run.

The Camels will make their 2019 home debut next week, hosting Shaw at Barker-Lane Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 7.

App State Clinches Division Title, Will Host Sun Belt Conference Championship

6:17 PM
BOONE – With a chance to clinch the Sun Belt East Division and host the inaugural Sun Belt Conference championship game, Appalachian State and Troy came into Saturday's gridiron clash with everything to gain. In a game that featured the two top defenses in the Sun Belt Conference, it was Appalachian State who came away victorious after a 21-10 win and the Mountaineers will host either Arkansas State, UL-Monroe, or Louisiana next week.

Turnovers determined the winner of the game as App State was able to score fourteen of its twenty-one points off of four Troy turnovers. Zac Thomas found Corey Sutton for two of App State's touchdowns. Thomas scored the other touchdown on a quarterback keeper. Sutton led ASU's receivers with five grabs for seventy-two yards.

Although Appalachian State scored two of their three touchdowns through the air, it was the ground game that kept the Mountaineers in the game and the Troy offense on the sideline. Led by Darrynton Evans, who recorded his fifth 100-yard game in Sun Belt competition, App State rushed forty-five times for 201 yards.

The App State defense held Troy to 232 total yards, well under the four-hundred the Trojans had been averaging so far this season and the second fewest Troy amassed in a game during the 2018 season. The Mountaineer defense was able to hold potent Troy running back in BJ Smith to only fifty-three yards and forced the Trojans to try and win through the air, a game plan that greatly favored the home team.

Leading the App State defense was former Thomasville Bulldog Akeem Davis-Gaither who finished the game with fourteen tackles (four solo) and a pass breakup. Clifton Duck also added an interception, the twelfth of his career and the twelfth of the season for the famed "Legion of Boone" defensive backfield.

Appalachian State will take on either Louisiana, U-Monroe, or Arkansas State next week. Game time is scheduled for noon.
