Charlotte Gives Up Over 600 Yards in 56-21 Blowout Loss to Maryland

7:58 PM
CHARLOTTE – It was a dreary, overcast day on Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium in Charlotte. While the forecast called for more precipitation throughout the afternoon, it was not water droplets falling from the sky but long passes from Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa. The junior, younger brother of former Heisman winner Tua, performed at a level commiserate with the family name, throwing for over three hundred yards in the first half alone, pacing the visiting Terrapins to a 56-21 win over the 49ers.

Charlotte redshirt freshman quarterback Xavier Williams made the first start of his career and was serviceable in his debut appearance against a Big Ten opponent. Going 19 of 35, Williams found the end zone twice on the afternoon, connecting with star receivers Victor Tucker and Grant DuBose. Tucker,  who led the team with ten receptions, added a second touchdown in the fourth quarter on a pass from backup Trexler Ivey.

Tagovailoa was every bit as special as anticipated going into the game. The redshirt junior was 27 of 31 on the day, tallying nearly four hundred yards along with four passing touchdowns. He added a short rushing touchdown in the third quarter. Defensively, Maryland stifled Charlotte, holding the 49ers to ninety-six yards on twenty-seven attempts.

Maryland, whose average scoring drive was less than three minutes, scored touchdowns on eight of their nine drives before kneeling out the clock to end the game. The only drive to not score a touchdown was at the end of the first half when Tagovailoa was picked in the end zone by Comanche Francisco, a lone bright spot for the 49ers defensively.

Next Week

Charlotte (0-3) goes on the road to face Georgia State in Atlanta for the second year in a row while Maryland (2-0) hosts SMU.

Turnovers Doom Wake Forest in Duke's Mayo Bowl

7:00 PM

CHARLOTTE - Wake Forest jumped out to an early two-touchdown lead over Wisconsin on Wednesday afternoon, but four second-half interceptions were too much to overcome as the Demon Deacons fell in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, 42-28.

All of the scoring for Wake Forest was by players who played their prep ball in North Carolina. Former Hertford County standout Jaquarii Roberson had a stellar day, hauling in eight catches for 131 yards. His three scoring catches tied a bowl record. Former East Forsyth Eagle Christian-Beal Smith had the other touchdown for the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest is now 15-12 in neutral site games in Charlotte and 2-1 in Charlotte-based bowls games, winning the 2007 Meineke Car Care Bowl and the 20017 Belk Bowl. The Demon Deacons are now 4-12 against Big Ten opponents. Wake Forest has now played in five straight bowl games for the first time in program history.

Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson

"First off, congratulations to Wisconsin. Football is usually a game where the team that makes the fewest mistakes wins. They made a lot less mistakes than us and they played much better fundamental football. I am proud of the way we competed to the very end. I thought our guys battled physically, but we just made too many fatal mistakes to overcome. A blocked punt that leads to a touchdown; we take a lead in the third quarter and then we give up a 59-yard kickoff return. We threw four interceptions in the last 17 or 18 minutes of the game. We had some violations on defense in the play-action game. What happened was a very good, hard fought and competitive game got out of hand because of all the turnovers and special teams miscues. We just made way too many mistakes to win the football game. Again, congratulations to Wisconsin. I certainly want to thank our coaches, staff, and players for the commitment they have made since July. I want to thank Danny Morrison and the Charlotte Sports Foundation for inviting us to play in their bowl game, and the Panthers and Duke's Mayo for their sponsorship of this event. Again, we did a lot of good things. We moved the football. It is not too often you outgain a team 518 to 266 and lose the game. But when you throw four picks, you are not going to ever overcome that. I am disappointed, but proud of the effort. We'll learn from it, grow from it and hopefully be a better program in 2021 because of it."

Trio of North Carolina Standouts to Lead App State Against Big Ten Foe

9:27 PM
Appalachian State is opening its third straight season on the road against a Top 15 opponent as the Mountaineers visit Penn State this Saturday afternoon. The defending Sun Belt Conference champion Mountaineers hope to pull off their second win over a Big Ten opponent after shocking the world as the first FCS team to take down a Top 5 team at Michigan in 2007, a game also played on September 1.

Appalachian State has the fifth-best record in FBS over the last 45 games and for Scott Satterfield's Mountaineers to keep this winning tradition alive, he and the App State coaching staff are relying on three standout players to lead their #10strong campaign. #10strong represents the ten position groups on the team and will help provide leadership for a roster that is majority underclassmen.

Offensively, the Appalachian State offense will depend on star running back Jalin Moore's ability to find the end zone. Moore, a former Crest High standout, was named to the preseason watch lists for the Maxwell and Doak Walker Awards. Moore, whose 3,170 yards are second-most for returning players in the FBS, is ranked by Athlon as the number 19 running back in the country and second-best among the Group of Five conferences.

On the defensive side of the ball, two North Carolina players who stayed home to play for the Mountaineers will try and help maintain a defense that only gave up twenty points a game last season. Junior Clifton Duck (Butler) was named the preseason Sun Belt defensive player of the year was also named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list and is also a Street and Smith preseason second-team All-American. Duck's eleven interceptions over the last two seasons is tied for the most in the nation.

Leading the Mountaineer defense up front is MyQuon Stout, a senior nose tackle whose 41 tackles in 2017 are the highest among returning players in the Sun Belt conference. The former Carson star was named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list, an award that goes to the college player who best represents community service and academic achievement.

Kickoff from Beaver Stadium is set for 3:30pm. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
