UNC Bowl Eligible After 41-10 Drubbing of NC State

10:17 PM
RALEIGH – Bowl eligibility was on the line for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Pride, and the ability to play spoiler to their biggest rival was on the line for the Wolfpack of NC State. Pride wasn’t enough as UNC’s sensational true freshman Sam Howell threw for 401 yards and three scores en route to a 41-10 win for the Tar Heels and a disappointing end for the 2019 season for the Wolfpack.

North Carolina got some good movement on the first drive of the game, but a big stop and forced fumble by Isaiah Moore forced the Tar Heel punt. The Wolfpack offense, who has been injury-plagued for most of the second half of the season, got their wheels moving after a big run by Jordan Houston got NC State into scoring range, allowing the Wolfpack to get on the scoreboard first with a 30-yard Christopher Dunn field goal.

The UNC offense gained plenty of yards through the air throughout the first half but had little to show for it. The Sam Howell to Dyami Brown connection was strong over the first quarter and a half with the two connecting for receptions of 45 and 33 yards. The second reception got UNC into the red zone where the Heels were forced to settle for a 20-yard Noah Ruggles field goal to knot the score at 3. Ruggles added a second field goal with four minutes left in the half to give North Carolina their first lead of the evening.

Payton Wilson came down with the tipped pass for the interception to give NC State another shot to get on the board before the half and this time the Wolfpack took full advantage. After converting on a fourth and short to extend the drive, Devin Leary hit a wide-open Tabari Hines for a 39-yard score and the home team was able to take a 10-6 lead into the locker room.

Needing something to spark his team, UNC freshman defensive back Don Chapman came down with a pick that gave his team favorable field position early in the second half. Javonte Williams did the rest, catching one pass for twenty-one yards and scampering into the end zone from twenty-nine yards out to give the visitors a 13-10 lead.

Williams added another third-quarter score to cap an eleven-play, seventy-one-yard drive to make it a ten-point UNC lead, but that wasn’t enough as he added a third touchdown late in the quarter, made possible by a Jeremiah Gemmel fumble recovery.

Just when it looked like it couldn’t possibly get any worse for the Wolfpack, UNC’s Trey Morrison stepped in front of an NC State pass and gave the Tar Heels the ball near midfield. The Sam Howell-Dyami Brown connection was reawakened and the duo connected for a fifty-two-yard score to give the visitors a twenty-four point lead going into the final fifteen minutes.

The last points of the night were scored by Dazz Newsome on a 13-yard pass to the back of the end zone, a pass which put Howell over the 400-yard mark for the first time in his collegiate career.

Notable North Carolinians
Javonte Williams (Wallace-Rose Hill) – the sophomore running back scored three touchdowns in the third quarter, breaking open the game for UNC.
Dyami Brown (West Mecklenburg) – the sophomore wide receiver broke free for 150 yards on six receptions, including one touchdown grab.
Payton Wilson (Orange) – redshirt freshman led the Wolfpack with ten tackles and had an interception in the second quarter which set up NC State’s lone first-half touchdown.
Chazz Surratt (East Lincoln) – the junior linebacker led the Tar Heels with ten tackles, including five solo, and a sack.

Noteworthy Notes
With the win, the Tar Heels now lead the series 67-36-6 and are bowl eligible for the first time since 2016.
Tonight’s UNC win breaks a three-game NC State winning streak.
Mack Brown has won six straight games against NC State over his two stints as head coach of the Tar Heels.

Next Week
NC State finishes the 2019 season with a record of 4-8 while North Carolina, at 6-6, will await their bowl matchup.

ECU Closes Out 2019 Season With Loss to Tulsa on Senior Day

3:28 PM
GREENVILLE – It was Senior Day at ECU on Saturday afternoon. The hometown Pirates were graduating fifteen players in Coach Mike Houston’s first season at the helm. It was not the goodbye that the home team was hoping for as the visiting Tulsa Golden Hurricane amassed 669 total yards on their way to a 49-24 defeat of the Pirates.

After ECU punted on their first possession, Tulsa responded immediately with a 64-yard Shamari Brooks run to get the Golden Hurricane in the red zone. The Pirates defense stiffened up and eventually stuffed Tulsa on a fourth down and one for a loss of four yards. The ECU offense couldn’t take advantage of the momentum, though, and punted it back to the visitors.

It took until ECU’s fourth drive of the game before they found any momentum offensively. Utilizing a series of Ahlers tosses and Demetrius Mauney runs, the Pirates were able to break open the scoring with a 51-yard field goal. Tulsa immediately responded when Zach Smith found Sam Crawford, who raced sixty-six yards down the right sideline to retake the lead and awaken the Golden Hurricane offense.

Tulsa added two more Zach Smith touchdowns in the first half, one a 29-yard pass to Keylon Stokes and the other a four-yard toss to Keenen Johnson. The Johnson touchdown was particularly heartbreaking for the ECU faithful as it was the exclamation point on ten-play, ninety-two-yard drive. The seventeen-point margin carried into the second half.

ECU thought they had turned the momentum when Davondre Robinson picked off a Tulsa pass on the third play of the half, but a Pirate fumble on the ensuing play gave the ball right back to the Golden Hurricane. Four plays later, Tulsa freshman running back TK Wilkerson scooted in from ten yards out and the home team found themselves facing a four-score deficit for the first time in over a month.

Ahlers and the Pirates finally found pay dirt midway through the third quarter, capping a twelve play, seventy-five-yard drive with a three-yard pass to Blake Proehl in the back corner of the end zone. It was the first of two scoring passes on the day for the sophomore signal-caller. Keylon Stokes forty-one-yard kickoff return helped Tulsa get back in scoring position quickly and when Zach Smith connected with Shamari Brooks for his fourth touchdown of the day, it was out of reach for the Pirates.

Notable North Carolinians
Holton Ahlers (Conley) – the sophomore threw for three scores and led the team in rushing
CJ Johnson (Conley) – the receiving half of the “Conley Connection” amasses 141 yards on six catches and one touchdown
Blake Proehl (Providence) – the sophomore receiver from Charlotte scored two touchdowns on the day

Noteworthy notes
After a run of six straight ECU wins in the series since 2008, Tulsa has now won the last two games between the two AAC foes.
The winning team in this series has scored at least 44 points in six of the last seven games in the series.
Tulsa quarterback Zach Smith was 21- of 30 on the day for 331 yards and five touchdowns. This was part of a very balanced attack for the Golden Hurricane who rushed for 338 yards.

Next Week
Both teams’ seasons are complete, and they will finish with matching 4-8 records.

Big South Announces 2019 Football All-Conference Teams and Annual Award Winners

7:09 PM
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Monmouth redshirt-senior quarterback Kenji Bahar (Baltimore, Md.) has been voted the 2019 Big South Football Offensive Player of the Year, while Kennesaw State redshirt-junior linebacker Bryson Armstrong (Marietta, Ga.) has been voted the Defensive Player of the Year by the conference’s head coaches and media panel, it was announced today.  In addition, Campbell quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams (Atlanta, Ga.) is the Offensive Freshman of the Year, while Charleston Southern defensive back Cody Cline (Concord, N.C.) is the Defensive Freshman of the Year honoree.  Charleston Southern placekicker Alex Usry (McDonough, Ga.) was voted Special Teams Player of the Year and Monmouth head coach Kevin Callahan was selected Coach of the Year.  North Alabama strong safety K.J. Smith (Perry, Ga.) was voted the football Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s sports information directors.

Bahar is Monmouth’s first Big South Offensive Player of the Year honoree since the Hawks joined the conference in 2014.  He was the league’s top passer during the regular-season with 3,262 yards (fourth-most in Big South history) and 28 touchdowns, and paced the conference in total offense with 3,454 yards and 287.8 per game.  Bahar completed 254-of-384 passing attempts for a 66.1 completion percentage, had a league-high five 300-yard passing games and six 300 total offense games, and threw multiple touchdowns in a game eight times.  A finalist for the Walter Payton Award, Bahar was a three-time Big South Offensive Player of the Week honoree in 2019 and leads the conference in 11 offensive categories.  He threw a touchdown pass in every game this year, and his 28 scoring strikes are the second-most in a season in league history.  Bahar threw for five touchdowns against North Alabama on Nov. 9 and had four in the regular-season finale against Hampton.  In six Big South games in 2019, Bahar was 104-of-153 passing ( =68.0 percent) for 1,655 yards and 15 touchdowns with just two interceptions.  He gained 424 yards of offense in Monmouth’s road win at Kennesaw State on Nov. 2, and posted four games with a passing touchdown and rushing TD.

Bahar was a near-unanimous selection as he received 22 of the 23 first-place votes cast in the Offensive Player of the Year voting to finish ahead of runner-up Jadakis Bonds of Hampton.

Armstrong is the second consecutive Kennesaw State player to be voted the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year.  A finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the nation’s top defensive player, Armstrong recorded a team-high 73 total tackles during the regular-season -- including 44 solo stops.  A member of the nation’s fifth-ranked defense, Armstrong has totaled 10.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery this season.  He has helped the Owls lead the Big South in total defense (277.8), scoring defense (17.9) and rushing defense (90.8).  Armstrong was the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 28 following his 10-tackle, 2.5-TFL, 1.0-sack effort over North Alabama.  He led KSU in tackles five times -- including three games with 10+, and his 73 stops are 28 more than his next-closest teammate.  Armstrong also recorded a tackle-for-loss in eight of his 11 games played.

Armstrong received six first-place votes and 19 points in the voting to edge out Presbyterian College linebacker Colby Campbell (16 points and seven first-place votes) and Monmouth linebacker Da’Quan Grimes (13 points and three first-place votes) for the defensive honor.

Williams enjoyed a record-breaking campaign in his first year leading the Camels.  A finalist for the

Information
Jerry Rice National Freshman of the Year Award, Williams received four Big South Freshman of the Week nods as well as five STATS Honorable Mention accolades in 2019.  Williams established Big South-freshman records for passing touchdowns (17), total offensive yards (2,686), rushing yards by a freshman quarterback (664) and rushing touchdowns by a freshman signal-caller (9).  He led all Big South freshmen AND quarterbacks in rushing yards, and passed for 200 yards and rushed for 100 yards in a game twice in 2019.  Williams posted a league-high six games with both a rush TD and passing touchdown, was second with four games accumulating 300+ yards of offense, and was third overall in total offense yards.  The first freshman quarterback in Big South history with multiple touchdown passes in the first three games of a season, Williams had a TD pass in his first 10 collegiate appearances and six multi-TD pass efforts.  He was responsible for 27 total touchdowns this year -- including a touchdown reception against Hampton on Oct. 19.

Williams totaled 16 first-place votes in the Offensive Freshman of the Year voting to finish ahead of Gardner-Webb’s Devron Harper (seven).

Cline led all Big South freshmen on the season with 73 tackles (48 solo) as well as per game with 6.1.  He also ranked seventh in the conference in passes defended in conference play and tallied six overall.  Cline was the Nov. 2 Big South Freshman of the Week after recording 11 tackles and an interception at Gardner-Webb.  Tied as the Buccaneers’ second-leading tackler in 2019, Cline registered 10 stops vs. Monmouth, as well as nine stops and 1.5 tackles-for-loss in CSU’s six-point loss to nationally-ranked North Carolina A&T.  He tallied at least seven stops in a game five times.  Cline received 14 first-place votes in winning the Defensive Freshman of the Year voting, ahead of Kennesaw State’s Markeith Montgomery (eight).

Usry is the second Charleston Southern Buccaneer to earn the Big South Special Teams Player of the Year honor since the award’s creation in 2013.  He finished the year with a team-high 82 points, as he was a perfect 25-of-25 on PAT attempts and went 19-of-25 on field goal tries.  Usry’s 19 field goals led the Big South and tied for the third-most in a season in league annals.  He tied the Big South single-season record with seven made field goals from at least 40 yards -- three of which were 50+ yard kicks.  Usry had a streak of 11 consecutive field goals made, the second-longest streak in conference history, and in that span he tied the Big South single-game record with four field goals in Week 8 at North Alabama.  He became the first kicker in Big South history to make two field goals of at least 49 yards in the same game when he booted a 49- and 50-yarder at Kennesaw State in Week 7.  Usry was a four-time Big South Special Teams Player of the Week honoree this season, had three 10-point kicking games, and had the league’s longest field goal with a career-long 52-yarder against UNA.  Usry finished with 22 total points (seven first-place votes) in the voting, just ahead of Gardner-Webb return specialist Devron Harper (20 points and six first-place votes).

Callahan is a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award after leading the Hawks to a 10-2 record, an undefeated 6-0 league mark for the outright Big South championship, and a No. 11 national ranking after entering the Top 25 polls on Nov. 4.  The squad won 10 games for the first time since 2006 -- including wins over FCS Playoff participants Albany (38-35) and Kennesaw State (45-21).  The victory over the Owls ended KSU’s 12-game Big South win streak, the Owls’ league-record 17-game regular-season home win streak and broke Kennesaw State’s league mark of 23 consecutive regular-season FCS victories.  Monmouth has scored 40 points in a game six times this season, and surpassed 500 yards of offense five times in 2019 -- including 696 vs. Hampton, 599 vs. Gardner-Webb and 517 at Kennesaw State.  Monmouth is the Big South’s top offensive team with 487.4 yards and second with 36.3 points per game.  In six Big South contests, Callahan guided the Hawks to 44.8 points and 555.5 yards per game, while the defense held league foes to 14.2 points and 307.0 yards.  Monmouth carries an eight-game winning streak into the FCS Playoffs and is averaging 35.6 points and 519.4 yards of offense in that span, while holding the opposition to 12.4 points and 309.8 yards.

Callahan received 17 of 23 first-place votes and 60 total points, ahead of Charleston Southern head coach Autry Denson (three first-place votes and 29 points) and Kennesaw State’s Brian Bohannon (one first-place vote and 22 points).

Smith is a 4.00 student in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis on Health, and on the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot following his Academic All-District selection.  A two-year starter at UNA, Smith finished fifth on the squad this season with 54 tackles, in addition to two interceptions.

The Big South also announced its All-Conference first and second teams.  The squads are comprised of 12 offensive and defensive players and five special teams players, plus any ties.  Monmouth led the way with 17 total selections (nine first team), while Charleston Southern was second with 11 honorees (eight first team).  Kennesaw State was next with eight, followed by Campbell (seven), Gardner-Webb (seven), Hampton (three), North Alabama (three) and Presbyterian (two).

Bahar, Armstrong, Usry and Cline each earned a spot on the All-Conference team.  The list of 2019 All-Conference members and award winners, as well as the All-Academic Team, appears below.

Charlotte Bowl Eligible For First Time After 24-13 Win Over Marshall

3:55 PM
CHARLOTTE – It was an emotional week for the Charlotte 49ers. Twenty-one seniors were graduating, and bowl eligibility was on the line. The fact that former head coach Brad Lambert was on the opposing coaching staff for the night made it even more meaningful. A steady rain tempered the size of the crowd in the stands, but not the energy in the stadium. The Charlotte 49ers fed off this energy throughout the entire night on their way to a 24-13 win over the visiting Marshall Thundering Herd.

With both offenses sputtering and trading turnovers to start the game, it was the Marshall special teams who stepped up first to get points on the board. Charlotte was backed towards its own end zone on a fourth-down when Darius Hodge got a hand on the punt attempt. The ball was picked up by Joseph Early who ran sixteen yards to give Marshall a 7-0 lead.

Marshall added a field goal in the second quarter to take what seemed like a commanding ten-point advantage, but Charlotte’s offense finally sparked to life two drives later, going eighty-six yards on eight plays and culminating in a fifteen-yard Chris Reynolds rushing touchdown. Charlotte had a chance to tie the game at the half, but a last-second field goal went wide and the visitors took a 10-7 lead into the locker room.

Much as how the two teams mirrored each other to start the first half, both squads did the same to begin the second half. After Charlotte marched sixty-nine yards in a little over five minutes and eventually settled for a 23-yard Jonathan Cruz field goal, Marshall went sixty yards in almost six minutes before regaining the lead with a Justin Rohrwasser 31-yard field goal.

If the Forty-Niners were going to try and win to become bowl eligible for the first time, it was going to have to happen in the final fifteen minutes of the game. And the Charlotte offense made good on this opportunity, driving down the field with a series of Chris Reynolds and Benny LeMay runs. When Victor Tucker, who had attracted four defensive pass interference penalties on the day, ran around the left side for five yards and hit pay dirt, the home team had the lead for the first time on the day.

It was now time for the Charlotte defense to step up once again to seal the deal. Nafees Lyon’s interception with six minutes left in the game was the defensive play the 49ers needed and one highlight on a night for a defense that did not give up a touchdown. The Charlotte offense marched back on the field with a mission – kill the last six minutes on the clock, score, and put the game out of reach. An amazing grab by Victor Tucker in the end zone on a fourth down with less than a minute remaining was the final nail in the coffin and Charlotte fans stormed the field as the clock hit 0:00.

Notable North Carolinians
Chris Reynolds (Davie) – The sophomore quarterback ran for over 100 yards and a score while also throwing for a score.
Jeff Gemmell (Heritage) – The senior linebacker led the team with ten tackles, the third time in the last four games he has recorded double-digit tackles.
Darius Hodge (Wake Forest) – The sophomore defensive lineman’s blocked punt in the first quarter led to the only touchdown of the night for Marshall.

Noteworthy Notes
With a staggering defense, Charlotte held Marshall to only 230 yards of total offense, the second-fewest Marshall has amassed in a game this season. Only G5 powerhouse Boise State held the Herd to less.
Charlotte quarterback Chris Reynolds outrushed the Marshall offense by himself, 145 to 144.
Running back Benny LeMay went over 100 yards rushing for the sixth time this season and crossed the 3000 yard mark for his career.

Charlotte's "ClubLIT" was ecstatic when head coach Will Healy decided to celebrate "Lee Corso" style

Next Week
Charlotte (6-5) closes out the regular season on the road at Old Dominion (1-10) while Marshall (7-4) hosts FIU (6-5).

Eight Matchups Worth Keeping an Eye On Tonight

5:55 PM
Eight Matchups Worth Keeping an Eye On Tonight
1A
#4 Northampton County (8-3) vs. #5 Northside-Pinetown (8-4)
Zakkai Wilson is all over the field for Northside and his efforts have helped the Panthers to an impressive 5-1 record on the road so far this season. The Northampton Jaguars are on a four-game winning streak and coach George Privott needs a win this week and next to have three straight double-digit winning seasons.

1AA
#4 Mount Airy (8-3) vs. #5 Mountain Island Charter (10-2)
Both teams sport solid running games with electric backs in Mountain Island’s Elijah Burris and Mount Airy’s Johnathon Smith. The Raptors have won ten games for only the second time in school history while the Granite Bears are no stranger to long playoff runs. Expect a lot of points and an early evening.

2A
#2 SouthWest Edgecombe (11-1) vs. #7 Whiteville (9-2)
Jvonte Davis and the Whiteville Wolfpack shocked a lot of people with their shutdown of a potent Wallace-Rose Hill team last week. But, Cortezz Jones are sure to give them a fierce level of competition this week. This is a matchup of two top ten teams that are playing way too early in the playoffs.

2AA
#4 South Granville (9-3) vs. #5 Currituck County (9-3)
Expect to hear Jayden Calloway’s name called a lot during the game. The senior is the key to success on offense for Currituck. On the other side of the field is a sensational sophomore in South Granville’s Micah Wilkerson. With a win, Mike Hobgood will have guided the Vikings to three double-digit wins in his four years as head coach.

3A
#2 Statesville (12-0) vs. #10 Kings Mountain (10-2)
These two teams might break the scoreboard by the end of the night. The two teams are averaging a combined ninety-nine points so far this season. Much of this is due to two outstanding quarterbacks in Kings Mountain’s Ethan Reid and Statesville’s Nebanye Moore. I’m expecting a healthy dose of running backs Rashaard Brooks and Caylon Imes tonight as well.

3AA
#2 New Hanover (11-1) vs. #7 West Brunswick (10-1)
This is a rematch of the Mideastern 3A title game from just a few weeks ago which New Hanover carried 28-7. West Brunswick scores little but gives up even less. There’s a good chance the number of carries Mikai Stanley has will have an impact on the game. More carries will be a good sign for the Wildcats.

4A
#2 South View (9-2) vs. #7 Jack Britt (8-4)
These two teams met to start the 2019 season in a great matchup that went to overtime. Jack Britt won that day, but they will have to travel to Hope Mills again if they do not want to bookend their season with South View. Expect to hear Matthew Pemberton’s name called a lot tonight if the Tigers are to move on to the third round of the playoffs.

4AA
#4 Myers Park (11-0) vs. #5 Ardrey Kell (11-1)
Scott Chadwick’s Myers Park team is loaded this season, but the Mustangs were forced to settle for the #4 seed in the 4AA west and a touch second round draw in Charlotte rival Ardrey Kell. The Knights get a lot out of senior quarterback Jared Joseph, but Ardrey Kell will have its hands full trying to defend The Mustangs’ lethal offensive combo of Drake Maye and Muhsin Muhammed.

App State Overcomes Sluggish Offensive Performance, Holds On for Second Win Over Power Five Opponent

10:50 PM
COLUMBIA, SC – The Appalachian State Mountaineers had had two extra days to think about their first loss of the season to Sun Belt rival Georgia Southern. Two days to think about the “what-ifs” and how they could bounce back. A road to trip to face an SEC team wouldn’t seem to be the best way to recover for most teams, but Appalachian State isn’t most teams. Guided by a defense that only gave up 21 yards rushing for the night, the Mountaineers won their second game over a Power 5 team with a 20-9 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The two teams mirrored each other on the first two drives of the game, getting deep into plus territory, converting fourth downs, and eventually settling for field goals. On South Carolina’s second drive, they moved the ball just as they had done on the first drive but were forced again to settle for a Parker White field goal. The Mountaineers offense was unable to match the Gamecock offense and was forced to punt. The defense stepped up when the offense could not, forcing a three-and-out on the next drive. The mirror effect came back into being as Appalachian State tied the game on a 47-yard Chandler Staton field goal.

The first half seemed destined to be a low-scoring affair, filled with a series of third down stops, punts, and field goals. That was until true freshman defensive back Nicholas Ross came down with a tipped pass and raced around the left side to the end zone, giving the Mountaineers a 13-6 lead going into the half. It was Ross’s first interception and touchdown in his short career and the visitors had a lead they would not give up for the rest of the evening.

Coming out of halftime, South Carolina tried desperately to turn the momentum their way and an Ernest Jones interception looked like it would give them that chance. But the Mountaineer defense held, and the Gamecocks were forced to settle for their third field goal of the game. On the ensuing kickoff, junior Jalen Virgil found a line of blockers and scampered fifty-seven yards to the South Carolina 39-yard line. Seven plays later, quarterback Zac Thomas hit pay dirt from one yard out and the visitors had opened up an eleven-point lead, a margin that carried into the final quarter.

South Carolina refused to quit, however, and finally got into the end zone with three minutes left in the game after Ryan Hilinski found Bryan Edwards on a quick pass. Edwards broke out of a Mountaineers defender’s arms and raced twenty-three yards to the end zone to cut the deficit to five, 20-15, after the failed two-point try. A snafu on the subsequent kickoff led to the Mountaineers starting their drive on their own four-yard line. Four plays later, Appalachian State was forced to punt and South Carolina had one last chance to find victory on the night. The Gamecocks made it all the way down to the nine-yard line, but a last-second pass to the corner of the end zone was incomplete and the Mountaineers celebrated with all of the Appalachian State faithful who made the three-hour trek south and turned Williams-Brice Stadium into Kidd Brewer South.

Notable North Carolinians
Jordan Fehr (Providence) – the senior linebacker amassed nine tackles and a sack on the night
Akeem Davis-Gaither (Thomasville) – the senior had four solo tackles and a sack on the evening

Noteworthy Notes
The Mountaineers were outgained 346-202 in total yardage on the night, but special teams were the key as the only offensive touchdown of the night was set up by a long kickoff return into South Carolina territory.

Next Week
Appalachian State (8-1) travels to Atlanta to take on Sun Belt rival Georgia State while South Carolina (4-6) takes on SEC West opponent Texas A&M in College Station.

#11 Kennesaw State Holds Off Campbell, 38-35

9:39 PM
BUIES CREEK – No.-11 Kennesaw State scored 21 unanswered points around halftime and held on for a 38-35 win over Campbell Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Campbell (6-3, 3-1 Big South) twice cut the Owls (8-2, 3-1) advantage to three in the final period, but could not regain the lead.

Kennesaw backup quarterback Tommy Bryant came off the bench to run for 105 yards on 27 carries and add 91 more in the air on 5-of-7 completions in the Owls’ option attack.  Shaquil Terry had all five receptions for Kennesaw, good for 91 yards and two scores, while gaining 28 on the round on six attempts.

Campbell finished with a 386-343 advantage in total offense, and ran 71 plays to 61 for the visitors, but Kennesaw converted a pair of interceptions into 14 points in the second half.

Hajj-Malik Williams ran for 110 yards and threw for 233 more for the Camels, who have lost consecutive games for the first time this year.  Caleb Snead had 99 receiving yards on six catches.

Justice Galloway-Velazquez had 18 tackles and Dorian Jones 10 stops for Campbell.  Le’Vonte Larry led Kennesaw with eighth tackles.

The Camels led 21-10 with 1:57 led in the second quarter after Williams scored on a five-yard run.  However KSU drew with seven on Bryant’s 20-yard pass to Terry with just 30 seconds left in the second period.

Markeith Montgomery’s interception gave Kennesaw the ball at its own 20 with 10:53 left in the third, and the Owls drove 80 yards on 12 played to grab the lead on Bryant’s two-yard run.

On the next possession, Bryson Armstrong intercepted a tipped pass and returned it to the Camel 26.  Bryant then hit Terry on a 26-yard scoring pass to extend the margin to 31-21 with 2:33 left in the third.

Chris Cromartie recovered Bryant’s fumble on a hand off to set up the Camels at the KSU 34.  Williams connected with Snead on a 21-yard pass to set up Cameron Davis’ 3-yard run and trim the margin to 31-28 with 12:38 remaining.

Antavius Grier returned the ensuing kickoff 58 yards to the Campbell 37 and the Owls ran 5:38 off the clock before Bryant dove across from one yards out to again stretch the margin to 10 (38-28) with 6:51 remaining.

The Camels drove 74 yards to cut the gap to 38-35 on Williams’ 7-yard scoring pass to Snead with 3:01 to play.  However, Kennesaw was able to run out the clock to seal the win.

The Camels jumped in front with 5:04 left in the opening quarter on a two-yard run by Johnathan Hawkins.  Williams’ 20-yard run and a 33-yard completion to Jalen Kelsey set up Campbell with a first down on the two.

Nathan Robertson’s 43-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter cut the Campbell lead to 7-3.

Campbell answered with a 7-play, 79-yard drive capped by Williams’ nine-yard run to push the margin to 14-3.

However, the Owls responded with an 11-play drive to trim the margin to 14-10 on Bryant’s 8-yard rush with 6:27 to play in the half.

The Camels close out their home schedule next Saturday against Monmouth at 1:00 p.m. Kennesaw State travels to Hampton.

Charlotte Wins Third Straight; Rallies at UTEP

9:35 PM
EL PASO, Texas - R-So. QB Chris Reynolds threw for a school FBS record 354 yards, four shy of the overall record, and two touchdowns to lead the 49ers to a thrilling second-half comeback in their 28-21 victory over UTEP, Saturday in the Sun Bowl.

"The resiliency of our football team showed once again," said 49ers head coach Will Healy, whose 49ers improved to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in C-USA play. "We made some huge plays down the stretch.  Our defense pitched a shut out in the second half.  Crucial interception to end the game when they're driving and a lot of fun to celebrate with these guys because they've worked really, really hard at establishing a culture and at the day-to-day process it takes to be a special football program."

The win, Charlotte's third straight, is the 49ers first road win of the season. In two of those wins, Charlotte rallied from 14 points down in the second half.

Charlotte trailed 21-7 at the half but posted three scores in a dominant third quarter to tie the game at 21-21. The 49ers put up 192 yards of offense and scored 14 points while holding the Miners to just 19 yards and no points in the frame. So. K Jonathan Cruz kicked a pair of field goals in the third and Ishod Finger added a three-yard touchdown run to help Charlotte knot the score.

In the fourth quarter, DT Timmy Horne had a huge stop on fourth and one from the Charlotte four to stifle a potential go-ahead scoring drive for the Miners in the fourth quarter.

"Our defense did that in the entire second half," Healy said. "That's a big play.  Fourth and one and they're going in to score and we're able to get some penetration and get a huge stop on fourth and one.  Big momentum shift there. Really proud of the way our defense played in the second half."

Charlotte followed that stop with the game-winning 95-yard drive, capped by Reynolds 18-yard TD pass to Jacob Hunt. UTEP's final drive was clipped by Henry Segura's interception with 1:03 to play at the Charlotte 16-yard line.

"It goes to speak of our fight," said Reynolds. "Our defense played incredible today.  We didn't control the controllables in the first half and made some mistakes but we turned the switch in the second half. This team doesn't quit."

Reynolds also threw a TD pass to Tyler Ringwood in the first half. He finished the day with 445 yards of total offense (354 passing; 91 rushing) to break his own school record for total offense.

UTEP scored a pair of first-quarter TDs on its first two drives and added one with 42 seconds left in the first half to take a 21-7 lead into the break. Charlotte shut them out in the second half, however.  Charlotte had 483 yards of total offense while UTEP finished with 389 (262 in the first half). R-Sr. Jeff Gemmell led the 49ers defensive efforts with 10 tackles, a blocked pass, and a forced fumble.

Charlotte will head into its second bye week of the year before hosting Marshall, Nov. 23 at 3:30 (Stadium).

Wesley Dugger Becomes Davidson's All-Time Leading Rusher in Win Over Butler, 52-10

8:49 PM
INDIANAPOLIS – Junior running back Wesley Dugger became the program’s all-time leading rusher as Davidson downed Butler at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl Saturday in Pioneer Football League road action, 52-10.

Entering the day trailing the record by a mere 37 yards, Dugger used a second-quarter, 18-yard scamper to vault himself on top of an impressive historical mark. The Henrico, Va., native moved ahead of John Leverett who last raised the bar to 3,165 yards in 2004.

Adding to the historical significance of Dugger’s first-half production, Davidson scored 33 unanswered in the second quarter, spreading the five touchdowns out between different Wildcats. Davidson outgained the Bulldogs 269-124 including a 255-yard ground assault.

Dugger scored his 17th of the season, while seniors Jorell Story and Keylan Brown and sophomore Eli Turner Jr. rushed for one apiece. Junior quarterback Tyler Phelps also connected with Jackson Sherrard on a 14-yard touchdown toss.

Following a long and productive opening drive from the Butler offense, the Davidson defense held their own. Junior cornerback Jaylon Bolden made a spectacular interception of Bulldog quarterback Nick Orlando and had a shot at another later in the frame. Sophomore’s Jordan Reed and Chibuike Odo made first-half sacks as Davidson pressured well early.

With a healthy scoreboard advantage in the second half, head coach Scott Abell was able to utilize a bunch of young ‘Cats. Freshmen Jayden Waddell hauled in a beautiful ball from junior Louis Colosimo and turned on the jets for a 69-yard touchdown. Classmate Kenny Collins also found the end zone late in the contest, a 13-yard scoring scamper for the California kid.

Dugger finished with 118 yards on 24 carries and the pair of scores. Story had another strong day on the ground, tallying 89 yards to go along with his touchdown.

The Wildcats finished with 549 total yards, 458 of those from the backfield.

Senior cornerback Rayshawn McCall led a balanced defensive effort with seven total stops, four of them solo efforts. Junior safety Sean Holton played strong in a reserve role, recording five tackles including a tackle for loss.

Davidson hits the road for the final time Saturday, Nov. 16 when they travel to DeLand, Fla. For a PFL clash with Stetson. Kick off from Spec Martin Memorial Stadium is slated for 12 p.m.

Other Notables
Dugger finished the day with 3,247 yards … Adding two to his total today, he now sits one touchdown shy of tying the PFL rushing touchdown record.

A Way Too Early Look At Realignment in North Carolina

8:14 PM
There are so many realignment possibilities...

Every four years, the NCHSAA goes through a process of realignment where schools are placed in classifications and conferences according to their Average Daily Membership (ADM).

This past realignment sequence, the NCHSAA decided to try a 20-30-30-20 approach instead of the traditional 25-25-25-25 approach to classifying teams. This led to smaller 1A and 4A classifications and enlarged 2A and 3A classifications.

One item the NCHSAA has resisted in the past but is open to in the future is the addition of a fifth classification.

The ADMs for the 2019-20 school year were released today. Let's take a look at some possible realignment scenarios. FB indicates football-playing schools, NFB indicates non-football playing schools.

If the current 20-30-30-20 system were used...
