Campbell's Daniel Smith Named Big South Offensive Player of the Week

BUIES CREEK – After posting 332 yards of total offense and five combined touchdowns in Campbell’s 2018 season opener, Daniel Smith has been named the Big South’s Offensive Player of the Week.

Smith completed 11-of-20 passes for 260 yards and three scores, while adding 72 on 12 carries and two TDs on the ground to lead Campbell over visiting Chowan 49-26 Thursday night at Barker-Lane Stadium, the Camels’ first game as a member of the Big South Conference.

He connected with Snead for a 49-yard scoring pass, and found Roderick for a 72-yard TD hookup in the second quarter, pushing Campbell to a 21-0 lead at the halftime break. In the third, Smith both ran for and tossed a TD pass, and in the fourth quarter, his second four-yard keeper punctuated the night, concluding a 13-play, 63-yard drive that ate up more than eight minutes on the clock and pushed the advantage to 49-19 with 5:43 remaining.

The five-touchdown game marked the fourth of Smith’s young career, becoming the first quarterback in Big South history with two TD rushes and three scoring passes in a season-opening contest. Smith is the conference’s first signal-caller with two rushing scores and three passing strikes since Josh Woodrum passed for three and scored two for Liberty against Richmond in 2014.

The award is Smith’s second career conference player of the week honor, earning Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week accolades once last season. He was also tabbed FCS Offensive Player of the Week after a record-setting day at Davidson.

The 2017 First Team Freshman All-American (Phil Steele) and PFL Offensive Freshman of the Year has been named to a pair of preseason national watch lists, including the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award and the College Football Performance Awards FCS National Player of the Year Trophy.

Smith and the Camels will head to Georgetown for its first road test on Saturday, September 8. CU then travels to FBS member Coastal Carolina on September 15 before returning home on September 22, hosting Shaw at 6 p.m.
