ECU QB Shane Carden Named Davey O’Brien And Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Player-of-the-Week

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina’s Shane Carden added a pair of weekly honors to his senior resume Tuesday after being named the Davey O’Brien Co-Quarterback and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Player-of-the-Week.

Carden, who appeared on both preseason watch lists, guided the Pirates to a 28-21 victory Saturday at then-No. 17 Virginia Tech, running for the game-winning touchdown with 16 seconds remaining on the clock.

During the contest, the Houston, Texas, native set school records for career completions (741) and touchdown passes (63), and also moved into sole possession of second place in passing yards (8,286). For the season, he has 1,031 yards passing with seven touchdowns against two interceptions.

The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The Davey O'Brien Award honors candidates who exemplify Davey O'Brien's enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division 1 football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year D1 Texas college.

Carden and the Pirates (2-1) will wrap up their non-conference schedule playing host to instate rival North Carolina (2-0) inside a sold out Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. (EDT) and will be televised on ESPNU.
