Charlotte Shuts Out Johnson C. Smith in Queen City Clash

CHARLOTTE – It was billed as the Queen City Showdown, but by the time it was over, it was clear who the top team was in this intercity rivalry. Kalif Phillips ran for three touchdowns, Matt Johnson threw for another, and the Charlotte 49ers accumulated over five hundred yards of offense in an impressive 56-0 shutout win over Johnson C. Smith.

From the opening possession, it was clear that the Golden Bulls were no match for Charlotte's hurry-up offense. Moving quickly down the field, the 49ers engineered three touchdown scoring drives of less than two minutes each in the first quarter alone. Phillips scored two of his team record-tying three rushing scores in the first quarter to help push the 49ers out to a 23-0 lead after the first fifteen minutes. Phillips wasn't alone in finding the end zone as Maetron Thomas added a second half score to go along with his team leading sixty-seven yards.

But, the 49ers didn't need to depend on their running game to move the chains in this game. Quarterback Matt Johnson led an aerial attack against the Golden Bulls defense, throwing for nearly three hundred yards in the first half alone. Johnson hit receiver T.L. Ford for the 49ers' lone touchdown reception for the day while Trent Bostick led the team with four receptions for ninety-two yards.

On defense, the 49ers kept the Golden Bulls pinned up for most of the day, allowing less than two hundred yards of offense and no points. Linebacker Mark Pettit was a beast for the Charlotte defense, registering two sacks and three tackles for loss as well as a forced fumble. Prince Mayala got the 49ers defense on the scoreboard with a forty-eight yard pick-6 early in the third quarter.

Head coach Brad Lambert was proud of his team's effort. "We challenged our football team to come out and execute early in the game and I think they did that," Lambert commented after the game. The 56-0 win is the first shutout in Charlotte 49ers football history. Charlotte (2-0) travels to Durham next week to take on North Carolina Central, who defeated the 49ers 40-13 last year while Johnson C. Smith (0-1) hosts Kentucky State.
