Indoor Track State Championships Set For Saturday

CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships in two classifications of indoor track will be decided on Saturday.

The championships return to the Eddie Smith Arena on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. Last year's meets were unique in that the Eddie Smith Arena, one of the only indoor track facilities in the state, was involved in construction and was unavailable. The 2011 winter track championships were at Daskal Stadium at the Reid Ross Classical School in Fayetteville, contesting indoor events but run at an outdoor facility.

This year's meets will start with the 1-A/2-A/3-A championships, with all those schools competing together. Competition will begin at 9am.

Then the 4-A schools hold their championships, with both field events and running events starting at 4 p.m.

Last year the Knightdale and the Raleigh Wakefield women took the 4-A crowns in the winter track event.

Southeast Raleigh has been an indoor track force in both men's and women's competition in the 4-A classification, winning the last three state titles in the last five years. Southeast swept both state crowns in the 2010 indoor meet.

Asheville won the 1-A/2-A/3-A men's title in last year's winter track while Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons took top honors on the women's side.

Burlington Cummings captured the four 1-A/2-A/3-A women’s indoor state titles prior to last year, while Asheville was the 2010 team champ on the men’s side.
