2011 NCHSAA 3AA Championship - Postgame Wrap-Up

It’s been said that sequels are never as good as the original.  It looks like that applies to high school football championship games as well.  The lights were shining bright in Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill as the western and eastern regional champions matched up in the 3AA championship game.

Crest won the toss and opted to defer to the second half.  Northern Guilford took the opening kickoff, but was unable to capitalize.  Crest followed their opponent’s lead with their first possession and the first quarter looked like two teams that were feeling each other out.  Northern Guilford opened up the scoring on a 37 yard run by junior tailback TJ Logan.  Logan found a crease and then juked past two Crest defenders on his way to the end zone.  The PAT was no good and the Nighthawks held a 6-0 lead.

Defensively, the Nighthawks held Crest to no first downs in the first quarter and the second quarter looked like it would be more of the same.  But, sophomore quarterback Michael Gullatte found a streaking TJ Logan deep in Northern Guilford territory for a 49 yard gain down to the three yard line.  Florida recruit Rhaheim Ledbetter ran it on the next play and the resulting PAT gave the Chargers a 7-6 lead.

Northern Guilford would not be denied though, and continued to drive the ball down the field with a heavy dose of TJ Logan runs.  Logan had 97 yards rushing and 39 yards receiving in the first half with two touchdowns, the second a 19 yard pass to retake the lead.  A two point conversion was not successful and the Nighthawks took a 12-7 lead into halftime.

Crest received the second half kick-off, but was unable to move the ball and a sack moved the Chargers deep into their own territory.  Forced to punt from their own end zone, Crest gave the Northern Guilford great field position and the Nighthawks took advantage of it with TJ Logan’s third touchdown of the night.  Quarterback Daniel Downing put the Nighthawks into position to score with a run down to the 1.

Northern Guilford’s defense put the Nighthawks into position to score again with an interception by Scooter Mooney.  With the ball on the 1 yard line and fourth down, the Nighthawks again went to TJ Logan, who scored his fourth touchdown of the night.  The third quarter saw Logan finding pay dirt one more time, scoring on a 7 yd end around to the left side.  As the final quarter approached, Northern Guilford’s fans were celebrating a 31-7 lead.

Crest was still unable to move the ball as the fourth quarter began, a stifling Northern Guilford defense filling every gap and breaking up passes.  The Northern Guilford fans cheered as their team still led big with the time falling off the clock.  Nighthawk players celebrated their domination in the championship game with head coach Johnny Roscoe as zeroes filled the clock.  The final score read 31-7 in favor of Northern Guilford

3AA Championship Most Valuable Player TJ Logan finished the game with 204 yards rushing on 29 attempts, 39 yards receiving on 4 receptions, four rushing touchdowns and 1 receiving touchdown.  Also receiving awards for Northern Guilford were outstanding offensive player Daniel Downing and defensive player Scooter Mooney.  Representing Crest were Rhaheim Ledbetter on offense and Jonathan Bullard on defense.
