This model introduces significant changes, including an expanded roster of 17 teams and a dynamic structure that promises thrilling matchups throughout the season.

New Scheduling Model and Key Features

The 2024 season introduces a new seven-year scheduling model, running from 2024 through 2030. Under this model, each team will play eight conference games per season, with all 17 teams facing each other at least twice over the next seven seasons – once at home and once on the road. Notably, the current 14 conference teams will play a total of three times each in California over the seven years, ensuring a diverse and balanced competition.

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D., expressed the significance of the 2024 schedule, stating, “The membership was incredibly thoughtful and committed to producing an exciting, fair, and balanced schedule with our student-athlete experience as the top priority.” The absence of divisions, the increase in annual conference matchups from 56 to 68, and the continuation of the ACC Football Championship Game further add to the excitement.

Annual Rivalries

The scheduling model preserves 16 annual matchups, including notable rivalries and new pairings with the addition of Cal, SMU, and Stanford. for the 2024 season. For the first time since 2019, the season will span 13
weeks and include 12 games. Adding to the excitement, the CAA is expanding to
include 16 teams, marking a first in the conference’s history. The latest
addition to the roster is Bryant University.

The conference schedule is designed to include four home
games and four away games for each team. Teams were paired with a preferred
partner based on regional proximity, which played a crucial role in determining
the remaining opponents. In an effort to cut costs, air travel has been
limited, with most teams not having more than one flight during conference
play.

The 2024 conference action is set to kick off with four
games on Saturday, September 14. The opening day will see Maine hosting
Monmouth, Campbell visiting Rhode Island, North Carolina A&T
entertaining Delaware, and Towson traveling to Villanova. The following
Saturday, September 21, will mark Bryant’s CAA debut at New Hampshire.

The non-conference schedule is equally thrilling, featuring
12 games against FBS opponents. This includes three games against the ACC, two
against the Big Ten, two against the Big 12, and one against the SEC. Nine of
these 12 teams participated in bowl games in 2023. It’s worth noting that CAA
Football teams have secured 19 victories over FBS opponents since 2009.

The schedule also includes nine non-conference games against
teams that reached the FCS playoffs in 2023. Among these are two playoff
rematches, with Villanova hosting Youngstown State and UAlbany returning to
Idaho. In the previous season, CAA teams held a strong 20-10 record against
non-conference competition.

CAA Football’s impressive performance in the 2023 NCAA FCS
playoffs saw four teams - UAlbany, Delaware, Richmond, and Villanova -
receiving berths. This marked the 13th instance of at least four CAA teams
being chosen for the playoffs. The conference has consistently had at least one
team reach the quarterfinals every year since 1995 and has seen a team advance
to the semifinals in 10 of the past 11 seasons.

Thursday, August 29
Game MVP Garrett Greene led his team in rushing and passing as the Mountaineers improved to 9-4 on the season.

The Mountaineers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Greene hit a streaking Traylon Ray down the sideline on the game's first play. The freshman wide receiver raced past Tar Heel defenders for a seventy-five-yard touchdown. Just as the Tar Heels offense looked poised to even the score, West Virginia safety Aubrey Burks picked off an errant pass in the end zone, giving the ball back to the Mountaineers.

The Tar Heels finally got on the scoreboard with a Noah Burnette field goal halfway through the second quarter. The rest of the quarter was a rollercoaster of emotions for both teams. West Virginia extended their lead with a 78-yard punt return touchdown by Beanie Bishop Jr., only for the Tar Heels to respond with a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Conner Harrell to JJ Jones. However, West Virginia closed out the half with a field goal, heading into the locker room with a 17-10 lead.

The second half witnessed a continuation of West Virginia’s dominance. Kicker Michael Hayes added two more field goals, further solidifying the Mountaineers’ lead. Running back Jaheim White’s eleven-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter served as the final blow, sealing West Virginia’s decisive victory, and began a chorus of “Country Roads” by the thousands of Mountaineer faithful who had made the trip south. The postgame "Mayo Dump" had an equally raucous cheer.

Although the stat line was close, with West Virginia gaining 379 total offensive yards compared to North Carolina’s 353, the Mountaineers’ defense recorded two interceptions and consistently disrupted the Tar Heels’ offensive plays. The limited Tar Heels fans in attendance were left stunned, wondering how a season that began with so much promise ended with three straight losses and a bowl loss for the fourth season in a row.
Justin Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06439698705246492088noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1261431073806032216.post-10158414014510055072023-12-23T17:30:00.001-05:002023-12-24T09:12:20.838-05:00Duke Secures Birmingham Bowl Victory Over Troy with Stout Defense and Clutch Kicking

BIRMINGHAM, AL – In a hard-fought battle at Protective Stadium, the Duke Blue Devils emerged victorious against the Troy Trojans, claiming a 17-10 win in the Birmingham Bowl on December 23, 2023. Ohio's well-rounded performance, anchored by a stellar defense, marked their fifth consecutive bowl win in seven seasons. The Bobcats' defense played a pivotal role, setting a Myrtle Beach Bowl record with five turnovers and limiting the Eagles to a mere 33 rushing yards. Sixth-year safety Jeremiah Wood shone with an interception and a forced fumble, contributing to what he described as one of the team's best defensive games.

Freshman running back Rickey Hunt emerged as the Myrtle Beach Bowl MVP, delivering an outstanding performance with five total touchdowns, tying a bowl record. Hunt's contribution, combined with graduate student quarterback Parker Navarro's efficient command of the offense, led Ohio to a flawless game without turnovers. Head coach Tim Albin expressed pride in the team's three-phase success, and this victory marked his second bowl win in his third season with Ohio. On the other side, Georgia Southern's quarterback Davis Brin set a passing record for the Myrtle Beach Bowl with 350 yards but faced challenges, throwing three interceptions. Despite a spirited comeback attempt by the Eagles, Ohio's strong defense and Hunt's exceptional performance ultimately sealed the 41-21 triumph.

Justin Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06439698705246492088noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1261431073806032216.post-4555255027535477212023-12-16T18:48:00.002-05:002023-12-16T18:48:12.365-05:00App State Wins Rain Soaked 2023 Cure Bowl

ORLANDO – On a rainy Saturday afternoon at FBS Mortgage Stadium in Orlando, Florida, the App State Mountaineers and Miami RedHawks battled in the 2023 Cure Bowl. Surviving a day where each team committed three turnovers, the Mountaineers were able to hold on for a hard-fought 13-9 win and App State’s seventh bowl win in eight tries since the team transitioned to FBS in 2014.

App State won the toss and elected to receive, putting their offense on the rain-soaked field first. The possession was short-lived, though as Miami’s Yahsyn McKee picked off a Mountaineer pass on the first play of the game. The App State defense stepped up and forced the RedHawks to settle for a field goal. The Mountaineers’ second drive saw App State make it all the way to the red zone, aided by a long, fifty-two-yard throw and catch from Joey Aguilar to Kaedin Robinson, but it was Michael Hughes’s twenty-nine-yard field goal that eventually got the Mountaineers on the scoreboard and crafted the first quarter score of a three-all tie.

The second quarter began with App State continuing a thirteen-play, eighty-eight-yard drive, but the Mountaineers were unable to find the end zone and took the lead with another Hughes field goal, this one a twenty-two-yard kick. Although the RedHawk offense fumbled the ball back to App State twice in the second quarter, the Mountaineers were never able to turn these opportunities into points and the two teams went into the locker room separated by three points with only three field goals to show on the scoreboard.

After forcing a turnover on downs to start the third quarter, the App State offense went back to work, determined to finally find the end zone at least once in the afternoon. As the gray skies turned darker, the Mountaineers marched seventy-three yards down the field over eleven plays, featuring significant rushing gains by Kanye Roberts and Anderson Castle. When Joey Aguilar crossed the goal line on a none-yard run, the Mountaineers made it a ten-point affair. After forcing a punt on the next drive, App State fumbled the ball back to Miami and RedHawks running back Rashad Amos made the Mountaineers pay with a twenty-three-yard rushing touchdown on the ensuing play. The PAT was no good and App State went into the final quarter with a four-point lead.

After a series of punts opened the fourth quarter, fans suddenly realized that the game was on the line as Miami took possession at their own nine-yard-line with five minutes left in the game. Unable to pass the ball all day, the RedHawks were forced to go up-tempo with their running game. The strategy was initially successful as the Miami offense had moved the ball across midfield in two-and-a-half minutes, but a costly fumble was forced by Omari Philyaw and recovered by Ronald Clarke, giving the Mountaineers the ball and a chance to run out the clock.

Justin Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06439698705246492088noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1261431073806032216.post-52017362593211219152023-12-10T10:35:00.003-05:002023-12-10T10:35:54.390-05:00Weddington Dominates in Fourth Title Win in Eight Years

RALEIGH – In a spectacular display of dominance, the Weddington Warriors clinched the NCHSAA 4A state championship with a resounding 56-14 victory over the Hoggard Vikings at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, NC. Weddington's defensive unit proved to be an impenetrable force, allowing only 14 points and sealing their championship victory.

The scoring kicked off in the first quarter with the Hoggard Vikings taking an early lead. After Trey Nixon intercepted a Weddington pass and nearly ran it back for a pick-six, quarterback Hudson Wilharm connected with Charlie Kilbourne for a 4-yard touchdown pass, putting the Vikings on the board. However, the Weddington Warriors quickly responded, with Keenan Jackson's 5-yard rushing touchdown, followed by another impressive 27-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Budge to Jackson, bringing the score to 14-7 in favor of the Warriors by the end of the first quarter. The Warriors continued to dominate in the second quarter, extending their lead with Nick Diamond's 12-yard rushing touchdown and Jackson's 21-yard touchdown reception, entering halftime with a commanding 28-7 advantage.

The third quarter showcased the Warriors' defensive dominance with a punt block return for a touchdown by TJ Davis starting off the scoring. The Weddington offensive onslaught continued with rushing touchdowns by Nick Diamond, Brady Ritter, and Tyler Budge, pushing the score to 56-14 and a running clock by the end of the quarter. Despite a late resurgence by the Hoggard Vikings in the fourth quarter, including a 65-yard rushing touchdown by Hudson Wilharm and a 20-yard touchdown toss from Wilharm to Ryan McAllister, the Weddington Warriors secured their triumph with a final score of 56-21.

On the offensive side, quarterback Tyler Budge orchestrated a masterful performance, completing 17 of 24 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns.
